** ABOUT ME **
Hello! My name is Jay, and I am a long-time veteran of storytelling and a semi-seasoned DM! I began playing Dungeons and Dragons roughly 5 years ago and began my first ever game as the DM. I figured things out by watching online games and fumbling my way through the rules, and never looked back! I've fallen in love with TTRPG's in general and want to share my experience and thoughts with the world and community I love so much. I currently DM two separate games regularly, and continue to learn every day.
** ABOUT THE CHANNEL **
Play Your Role is a project with the intention of helping inspire and coach players and DM’s alike to add story beats and dramatic moments into their games through basic writing concepts, interesting player character inspirations, and discussions on how to effectively roleplay in a way that helps (not hinders) everyone else's roleplay at the table!

There are great ways to even flavour combat spells for this. I love subtle magics with no glows or massive visual effects, just the effect. Cast fireball and you just snap your fingers and something explodes, cast frostbite and you mutter a curse and the target's fingers blacken and begin to coat with frost. Honestly just any magic without the flashy visual effects fits the witchy vibe

That's why I love the magic in shadowrun. No flashy presentation needed If your tradition aligns. "Looks can kill!". Just look at someone and they and their environment bursts into a flame, because you muttered the word "fireball" in your mind alone. Magic in shadowrun is something entirely different than D&D or Pathfinder. Much more... personal, darker... more dangerous I think. Heck. The Pathfinder Rules per se state that magic casting is obvious in itself if you don't have the perks that say otherwise. What about the enchantment and illusion spells? What use has a subtle charm spell if the target knows that I just cast a spell. So I as a GM allow more subtle spellcasting (often accompanied by a stealth check or the like) to cast more subdued. Just because I love the flair the the magic in shadowrun has as this entirely personal thing where the representation of a spell and how it is cast completely depends on how the caster interpret the magic and how they see the world.

Be careful to leave something for a sorcerer's Subtle Spell to do, though (if applicable).

@@SimonClarkstone Never see someone use metamagic in my P&P-Groups. Althought... we play Pathfinder 1e and all metamagic requires feats... so... it is massively overpriced compared to 5e. And surely subtle spell or still spell or the likes are still viable, because the gestures and the like have to be done. I only allow a stealth or sleight of hand check to do it covertly. So casting while being bound still is massively complicated if the spell as somatic components.

@@SimonClarkstone almost no sorcerer uses subtle spell in my experience as they don't have enough known spells to waste in more utility like a charm monster or detect thoughts. That is, in my experience at least

These are my favorites of your videos specifically because you DONT get into the mechanics/class/subclass. Everyone else does. To me, you fill a much needed niche which is the player version of Matt Colville’s approach: he teaches how to DM, you teach how to play. Great to know how to play a rogue but SO much better to hear examples of how to play a TYPE of character (irrespective of class) and balance it with the rest of the party. It’s so wildly refreshing and welcome. Keep up the great work!

When a man breaks down how a RANGER would be an almost perfect match for a witch, and how most D&D classes would work one way or another for it, this forces respect. You're a confirmed flavour master now. Well... alright you already were, but this is another shining example of it. I'm looking forward to more of these! Thanks for making me think outside the box!

I enjoyed this video. So many people see witches as hags and although that can be fun, all hags and classic views of witches are is the demonization of women. I think the best example of a witch is Tasha. She combines a wizards study with a fey’s innate magic.

@@PlayYourRole I appreciate this stand point! The best part is that your tips are more about how to embrace the concept and build the character. And I mean that in that you’re describing a witch’s character, rather than the game mechanics. Any magical class can be played as a witch, but it’s how you play their character that brings it home

Honestly, the term "Witch" has changed so much, that it barely resembles what it used to be. And that's for the better. The definiton of what is a Witch now is pretty different from what it used to be. Hell, Witch has become a gender neutral term now in some definitions

We had a new dnd player at our table who wanted to play a "woods witch", I helped her make a character using all the normal dnd rules. We never discussed her class at the table, just referred to her as a witch. It really helped keep the spooky-ness and mystery alive in the game.

unpopular opinion I think, is that Artificer is PERFECT because you get magic, then go alchemist, then get hex, then get metamagic from either sorcerer or the feat, maybe some druid or go sorc-druid, etc, druid, sorcerer, and artificer are the best classes for this Hexblood Alchemist is LITERALLY just a Hag as well maybe you don't want Alchemist, go Artillery and it's a staff with a cackling face or Battlesmith as someone who made a wooden golem or even a living cauldron, Armorer could have runic carving on their leather armor

Maybe role-play them as being a commoner with no magical power, only for them to secretly be the most magical person in town. Maybe I'mm make her an NPC in one the games I run. The best witch character I've ever seen in a D&D podcast has to be Matt Collville's "Morag", in the Vallenguard mini-campaign. Divination wizard is such a great fit for the concept, what with getting daily portents letting you glimpse the future, flavored as any variety of different witch-like ways to glimpse the future. Matt played her like your standard "chaotic gremlin" witch, sort of an Aughra (from The Dark Crystal) or swamp hermit Yoda vibe. Naturally, this falls into that sort of "Wild card" character designation that is going to struggle in scenes where you'll need to be serious, so I don't know if it's something that would work for a full-length campaign, but it was absolutely fun to watch and draw inspiration from.

I actually have made a homebrewed Witch - class for DnD that uses Spell Idols as a source of magic! The class is pretty heavily in alpha stages of play and testing, but nearly all of it was constructed over what you said in the video. Except my lore for the Witch is that unlike the Warlock, a Witch steals his/her powers from the creatures that would be legit Warlock patrons and protects her body from the patrons punishments via the use of Spell Idols.

@@EdgeLie My version of the Witch falls in between. My attempt was to make an Artificer-like class that subverts and changes how spells work. The Witch does that via Spell Idols, by changing how they operate (Spell Idols can be stone tablets, gems, sawed off bones etc.) The Witch has three subclasses; The Cursecrafter (Hags), The Evoker (Elemental Princes) and The Gazer (Elder Evils). Context wise this was my first entire class I have homebrewed (I have done some subclasses before, but never an entire class) so it is a bit of a stirring pot with combined effects and features with little quirks from other spellcasters.

I am currently playing a hexblade ranger, who is kinda a voodoo pirate. Her magic is cast through fabrics that contain the souls of hags and other creatures. She controls them telekineticly sort of like bending but with cloth instead of water, and with those very martial roots in her spellcasting. Whenever she learns a new spell she must make an animal sacrifice and comuine with her employers, then she receives a new shash with a new soul, acting as their prison warden and being able to draw on their power in exchange. Sorta posesing the themes of a witch and a witchhunter in tandam. She's a half orc, but she has a strange air and catlike eyes. I am picking spells mostly on what would look cool to have fabric do. Like wrathful smite in which this thin fabric thing dives into an opponent's mind digging under the skin and terrorizing them with the night hag's mastery of nightmare.

I actually had an idea for a character that was the son of a witch who was desperate to earn his mother's approval, and he was a Ranger/Druid. He was a Swarmkeeper/ Shepard, with the idea being that while his mother was more in tune with the traditional curses and plant based magics, he was rather adept with healing and beastial magics. Sadly haven't been able to bring that character to life yet, but one day I'll get to live my witchy dreams.

Gosh, Hex in roleplay is my favourite thing! I haven't played that much but when I build characters i love picking spells and other abilities that have utility out of combat and hex is perfect in that regard. yes, i still try to optimise the ability scores and some other aspects but i mainly do it to compensate for the suboptimal spell and prof picks because otherwise the character might die without getting anywhere development-wise
@AlexanderBaird

My favorite home-brew invocation is “Mischievous Hex”. You have learned to manipulate the whims of fate to aid in your mischievous endeavors. Whether causing guards to have a sudden urge to rub their eyes as you sneak by, witnessing a truly embarrassing performance by the local bard, or causing the Goliath Barbarian to lose an arm wrestling match against the gnome wizard, you thoroughly enjoy fiddling with fate toward its funniest outcome. When you cast the Hex spell, you can choose to cause the spell to deal no additional damage. Instead, you can use your bonus action to transfer the hex to a new creature within range even if the previous creature is still alive. When the targeted creature makes an ability check using the affected ability score, you can use your reaction to add a penalty to the roll equal to your spell casting modifier. You can choose to add this penalty after the roll is made but before success is determined.

I play a Shadar Kai ranger as the sole survivor of a dead coven. His coven sisters dead means his flashy spellcasting days are a thing of the past, however all the familiar spirits of the other witches changed into a swarm of crows (swarmkeeper) to protect him now, and he still uses his witchy knowledge. Hunter's Mark and Favored Foe are a whispered curse against his enemy while nocking his arrows, Primal Awareness spells come from directly digging his fingers into the ground, chanting spells asking his dead sisters buried beneath for their help, Healing Spirit and Summon Beast are him, picking out his own familiar from the swarm, the one that's mroe in sync with him, asking for their aid. His Canny expertise on survival, and Hunter's Mark's boosted tracking aspects are him seeing through the eyes of every corvid in the area, looking for his prey. Cure Wounds/Lesser Restoration/Goodberry are the putrid poultices he still knows how to craft. It works wonderfully.

I think personally I like witches as nature mages, not druids but occupying a different flavour of character who uses the power of nature for good, just through different means. This kind of witch may brew healing potions and other remedies, craft small enchanted protective charms or commune with local natural spirits. They could still be played mechanically as a druid but I think wizard, artificier and cleric can all work (and yeah sorcerer and bard and all that could work too, depending on how you flavour the character)

The core of any good witch build has to start with the spell list. Realistically, warlock has the worst spell list for witch. Maybe it's just me, but if you don't have find familiar, awaken, tiny servant, fly, bane, bless, and animate objects on your spell list you aren't a witch. Druids with certain feats come close, but realistically bard is the best witch class in the game. Swap out instrument proficiencies for tools like herbalism, alchemists, and prisoner's kits. Take the Golgari background for spells and flavor. Eloquence for enchantress witches. Valor for a Glinda the good witch party buffer focus. Lore for wise old crone type witches. Lots of stuff can be reflavored to make a decent witch.

@mirafeder7992
@mirafeder7992 2 года назад
My first "witchy-type" character was indeed a druid, who ticked all the classic archetype boxes. Lives alone in the woods? Check. Knows about plants and herbs and such things? Check. Fell a bit flat on the familiar side of things, but only, because I'm not a huge fan of familiars. And it was a rather traditional approach on the "whole potion brewing witch who knows about herbs healing plants and illnesses and such" thing. The second was a young woman, who had a more spooky vibe going on. Being in touch with the dead, curses. More the evil witch type without being outright evil. She just had a bunch of shit done to her in her live and now feels entitled to a free live after "nearly" dying (she died, but got pulled from the aether by her patron). My newest approach is again more to the first one, but again with a bit more spooky vibe. "The witch in the swamp", "The Lady of Snakes"... that are some titles given by people of the near village, because a) she is a lamia (a snake-like creature with a humanoid torso) and b) she knows quite a bit about poison, their cures and their medical uses. She may treat an illness with a thinned-down version of a deadly poison, so that you throw up, whatever causes your violent stomachaches. Here I like the whole "looks can decieve" motif. She wears a mask as a fetish for her magic abilities, her appearance in itself is somewhat monstrous and the association with poison doesn't speak for a inherent nice character, but she is willed to help people. Just doing what she can best to further the community, she lives of.

Great flavour options there. Maybe you can make a part two with more "lighthearted" witches. You could totally go the Little Witch Academia route with Bards, Eldritch Knights, Arcane Tricksters, and even Paladins. Or take inspiration from the "franchise and author who shall not be named" as well. In my opinion grim/dark or broody characters are a bit overdone and don't work that well in D&D groups (unless the campaign is explicitly built around that concept). I'll take good and light hearted (even clumsy) heroes any time of the week. Witches like Akko Kagari, Shiny Chariot, Luz Noceda, Kiki (Ghibli), or even Elsa do great in D&D parties.

If you like witches, check out Black Dice Society, specifically Valentine. She has that big witch energy... I'll see myself out.

Like an alchemist witch obviously works great, but imagine a battlesmith; with the steel defender being made from animated bones, collected from a lot of different creatures.

Can someone explain what's the difference between a warlock, sorcerer, wizard and witch? Or are they all synonyms? And how does the magician fit into those?
@mme.veronica735
@mme.veronica735 2 года назад
Warlock, Sorceror and Wizard are classes in Dungeons and Dragons. Witch is a popular idea in fiction. Magician is someone who does magic. In DnD Warlocks make a pact or sign a contract with a very powerful otherworldy often evil entity to get magic. Sorcerors have some connection to something magical in their history, a dragon ancestor, being exposed to very powerful magic, or being born the 7th child of a 7th child of a 7th child, they have innate magical abilities and magical understanding. Wizards study how magic works and, through no prior talent, learn how to perform magic, they keep their studies of magic in a spellbook.

@@jimatulkerriganus4316 Following up on the last comment, It really depends on the context. For the most part, any kind of mage could be called different things in different contexts. For example, Doctor Strange is called a Sorcerer in Marvel, but he would be a Wizard in D&D. It's really just about context.

Have you heard the idea that Cowboys and Witches are equal and opposites? One associated with High Noon, another with Midnight. One with masculinity another with feminity. One with engineering (guns) another with the natural (herbal potions). One with horses (which make messes) another with brooms (which clean messes)

My biggest advice when playing a Witch is don't be too strict about what counts as a Witch. The very definition of what a Witch is has changed DRASTICALLY over time. What really matters is moreseo how portray that archetype. And there's a lot of ways to do that. A Witch is usually portrayed as someone who has studied some kind of occult or forbidden art. Sometimes, Witches are synonymous with alchemists. And someone Witches are just female wizards (although this one is starting to go away gladly.) What i'm trying to get across is there's no 100% definition of what makes someone a Witch. As long as you are in that ballpark, your golden. And it's a pretty fucking big ballpark
