How To Load Your Kayak | Car Top and SUVs

For this video, I am using Kristie to show you just how easy it is to load your kayak on a car or SUV. It is really more about technique than strength, so don't be intimidated about loading a fishing kayak and don't think that you have to be able to lift the weight of the entire kayak.

Using your method, you can place a bathmat (rubber side down) on the roof. stays put and lets the kayak slide easily without scratching the paint.

This is the perfect video for loading/unloading a heavy kayak. Not just for women, but for any of us not beast enough to solo lift a fishing kayak overhead onto a roof rack lol. Awesome stuff guys!!!

Awesome video. Just got a really nice fishing kayak. I'm a smaller guy and only weigh about 140 lbs so needless to say, i cant lift my 11ft kayak on my CRV by myself... this video is definitely going to help come spring time. Thank for the helpful tips!

OMG Chad, THANK YOU!! I am a Christie, vertically challenged and all!! Hubby and I have been struggling with loading our heavy kayaks on the rooftop of our SUV with all sorts of gizmos and lots of pain. My sportsman 119 is only 50 lbs, so I'm able to lift it up no problem, but I've been thinking of upgrading to a kayak. I was worried about how I'd lift an 85 lb kayak, but this idea is great. Thanks for the video.

At 5ft 1 I wasn't sure I could load a kayak on to my lifted jeep by myself. I used your technique and loaded it up last weekend. I was shocked I managed to do it alone. I had a harder time reaching the roof rack to secure it so I used the door jam to get an extra boast.

2 things...so I have a 6hr ride to take with the yak on top...what about straps for the front and back? Also do you always do your loading with kayak face up? Seems many do it the opposite.

Does transporting it with no mounts and just the bars itself damage the kayak? I would think it puts stress on the hull on certain kayaks if they don't have a flat bottom.

So, several other kayakers have told me I need some "saddles" in addition to the OEM Chrysler crossbars I have on my Pacifica Van. But Chad is only using the crossbars here. I'd appreciate any opinions from other folks here?

What about carrying a kayak on the car roof and it starts pouring down rain? The weight of the kayak may increase dramatically and crush the roof of a small car like my Honda Fit.

Nope. Now that may happen if you have a sit inside kayak with the cockpit up. But sit on top kayaks are self bailing so you don’t have to worry about your roof getting crushed. 😜

I have 78” bars on my truck, but these bars were 65”. I am not sure how the roof is set up on yours, but check out the Hex Series cross bars from Dee Zee at www.deeezee.com

Yes, as long as you don’t over tighten, and don’t leave it strapped tight for long periods of time. If you plan to do that, I would consider some saddles or additional support. The biggest thing is to just avoid over tighten it.

Sunny Xiong those aren’t straps, they are guide lines and I do not use them. People tighten those down and warp their kayaks so I don’t recommend them any more.

great idea-load from the side--drrrrrrrr-why didn't I think of that--I haven't got roof rails but ill put a length of 1.3/4 x 1.1/2 timber on the roof bars that go across the car-then fix it on using heavy duty cable ties--ive just bought an ocean prowler and im struggling getting it on the roof (im almost 66)--ill check out your other vids in due course-thanks from the u/k

It’s the exact same way. It’s actually easier. Once you get the first kayak tied down, it is like you did the car before. Then you pivot the second kayak on the first one.

It’s just as easy in many cases and it’s definitely much easier than lifting the full weight of the kayak, which is the idea of this type of loading.

Be careful with those foam blocks. Those were the first things I ever used and my kayak almost fell off the car. I will ONLY use J Bars now. Period.

It's impossible to do this alone if your crossbars are the type that's latching directly to your vehicle

No it’s not. You just have to be parked on level or semi-level ground and you fold up a towel and put it under the bar on the downhill side to prevent it from sliding and then do the exact same thing and take the towel out after spinning the Kayak into position. You can also use a guide rope to the front handle and run it through the windows and back to yourself to help “guide” the Kayak into place and then remove the rope.

Yes. Essentially the same thing. But put as strap between the two to serve as a “saddle” then spin the boat once on top and maneuver it into the cradles. It’s pretty easy. I will try to get some J-Cradles and do a follow up video

Instead of doing the sideways part with the spin, just put one end up on the vehicle and then pick up the back end and slide it on top. It’s pretty much the same, just from the end instead of the side.

run a strap between your roof bars on the side you are loading the kayak that way you wont scratch the paint. The kayak then ends up sitting on the strap not your roof when you lift it up on top.

Easy tip......Buy a $5.00 cheap bath mat with a rubber bottom, and drape it over your cars paint to protect it, and allow for easier sliding

There goes the paint job on the roof of the car. Show again with rug struggle first. I have to cover my roof with rug or pad but have to take off for travel, then fight to put rug on under kayak before getting yak off roof/car. you just scratch car to show effect that it is easy.
