You can set your Motorola APX radio to send and receive location data, even on simplex! Each time you key up, it will send your coordinates with your transmission, and if your buddies have the same thing enabled, you can see their location on the screen when they transmit. Here's how to set up in CPS.
It's a very handy thing, and if I'm not mistaken, all APX portable radios have the GPS capability, it's just got to be enabled in the flashcode. You will want to make sure that option QA00782 GPS Activation is in there. I could be wrong, and it's not needed, but I haven't found any information to disprove this - so let me know if that's the case.
One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that this does work when operating in scan mode!
How it works is really simple, even on simplex. You key to transmit, and your location information (if the radio was able to get it - be outside for it...) is sent along with the voice. This only works on P25. Your channel can be mixed mode receive, but the transmit must be digital. If your buddies have this enabled and set up in their APX as well, when they key up, you will see their location.
If you are using a conventional P25 repeater, usually the location data will be repeated along with the voice. At least the digital repeaters in my area (conventional) were passing it, so your mileage may vary there. Those on trunking, or using DVRS, or LRRP serves and what not, you've got a more complicated setup, which is not covered in this video.
Here is how to get this up and running, so fire up the CPS, and open your radio's codeplug:
1. Under RADIO WIDE, you will want to check the following boxes/settings:
--Location Enable - this enables the location stuff!
--User Selectable Location - this allows you to turn on/off the GPS from the menu
--Location Display Format - Do you want Lat/Lon or MGRS?
--Distance Unit - Kilometers or Miles?
--Exit Location Menu on PTT - Just key the radio to exit the menu instead of hitting Exit
--GPS Fail Tone Interval - If GPS doesnt get a fix, how many seconds until it sounds tone?
--P25 Location Reporting - This is for the Trunking, DVRS and other high speed server users, check it anyway
2. Head to MENU ITEMS and select LOC from the list to enable the location menu on the radio
3. Edit your CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM by checking the SEND LOCATION TO PEER/on PTT box
That's basically all you need to enable the location stuff in your radio, and send your location when you PTT. The settings outlined above will also allow you to see another's location when they transmit if they have this enabled.
Remember, this only works on P25 transmissions - the channel can be mixed mode receive, but it's got to be digital on transmit.
With the location menu enabled, you can turn your GPS on and off, and see your current location. There may be some status messages, and I've outlined them for you here:
Unknown
This means the transmitting radio's GPS is either off, or there was no fix available to send
Stale
This means the last location is past it's update interval, simply put: outdated location information
