In this video I cover the process of locking the rear differential on your 3rd generation Toyota Tacoma with a brief overview of why it can lock and when you would use this feature. Included on the TRD Offroad and TRD Pro models, a locking differential can increase overall traction in certain situations and help you get un-stuck!

Sometimes when you press the differential lock button you may get a flashing light. All that is needed is to turn the wheel and slightly accelerate. This will allow the pin to slide and lock the differential. Likewise with unlocking the differential. Hope this helps

2016 trd. Watched a car care nut video. He says engage the whole system once a month. Couldn’t get the diff to engage. Thanks for the tip. I’ll try it.

All 3rd gen tacomas have lock diferencial thats why they came with lsd if you have the cheapest tacoma 4x2 prerruner but you pres traccion controll of it will engage the lsd that mean lock the 2 wheels

I just got an '18 TRD off road yesterday. I'm in Montana where we can have rough winters. Can you engage the locking diff just in 2h without using 4wd?

The locking diff should only be used at low speeds. We have rough winters as well and I use 4hi regularly on highways. Toyota recommends that you don't drive over 55 mph in 4wd.

And why no front locking differential on the Tacoma? new Bronco has both as does Chevy Colorado.

This isn't a TRD Pro either. You can get it on the TRD OR and the TRD Pro

How do you know if you have a locker on your diff if there's no lock button?

If there's no lock button you probably don't have one. Its only included on the TRD Offroad and TRD Pro models

@@DrivenCompanion I gotcha, thanks! That worries a bit though. I have 2017 SR5 with a factory lift and sometimes when I initially take off or I make a turn I hear a clink 🤔 any ideas?

Yeah but remember the hubs that used the 90 weight from the diff, in the 80s Toyata's, used to just leave them locked in.

@@dankcutter9200 Man go back to the 60s, my Land Rover was a bitch at 40 below zero in northern Vermont to lock the hubs for four wheel drive.

My Jeep TJ has a Detroit locker rear and aussie front. I always drive with a rear locker activated and never have an issue. I'm getting a TRD Offroad in a couple weeks and i'm curious about this as well.

For MANUAL Transmission: Start the engine, shift to 4WD High and then depress the clutch all the way and engage 4WD Low. This stops the blinking of "Lo" light indicator. Engage the Dff lock and if it continues to flash, turn the wheel in either direction and move front or back to engage the diff lock (pin). Disengage is the reverse.

The Off-road is definitely the better value. I'd recommend getting the OR and using the savings toward upgraded tires or other mods.

I was on 4H. Tryed to make a turn and the car felt like it was dragging while I curving. The dif locker was off and still dont know why the power was not distributed differently instead same rotation on all wheels

Were you driving on pavement? This is normal and usually only noticeable if you engage in 4H and try turning while on pavement or concrete.

@@danielslc88don’t do that. You need slip to turn in 4wd, pavement is going to cause part numbers to appear all over the place.

No front locker on the Tacoma unfortunately. For that you'll need to go Gladiator or Colorado ZR2

If it continues flashing just drive forward a few feet and turn the wheel. When you disengage it and go to 4H, and it won’t come off the lock and 4Lo drive up a few feet and turn the wheel!

Drive it. Is it true you only can drive when it’s locked no more than 5mph and straight. No turns ? Please help

Correct. You only want to use it when you're stuck and only one side is spinning.

Don’t be afraid of using it, you can leave it engaged for a nasty hill before hand, turning is a different story and it binds up on hard ground.

You can also turn on the multi terrain select and then the front axle will also be "locked" (using the offroad model's brake booster)

I've literally never pushed the button labeled RR DIFF LOCK on my 4x4 Tacoma. If I ever get blind drunk and feel daring, I'll try it sometime and hope nothing tears up. I like Toyota trucks, but they aren't bulletproof. They have parts failures just like every other brand in my experience. And I'm very easy on a truck: in 7 years I've never once taken my Tacoma off road. The undercarriage is perfectly clean.

@@dallanc.3368 I'm sure you're right, but even as easy as I am on this 2013 Tacoma 4x4, I've had to pay the dealership for some expensive repairs once the warranty was up: A/C system one time, electronics related to the A/C system another, and the audio system conking out are three that come to mind. It's almost 10 years old, yet I have only 88,000 easy miles on it. I'm not sure this truck lives up to "legendary Toyota quality," but it's paid for so I'll keep it. I drive it about once a week and keep clean synthetic oil in the loud, ornery, clackety, fussy 4.0 V6 engine.

Rear Lockers are only offered on the TRD OR and TRD Pro. They aren't available on the TRD Sport

What’s up the the sticker inside the truck that says to only lock it when you’re actually stuck ? Can you use off roading a difficult portion just as precautionary before you actually get stuck?

Its pretty hard on the vehicle mechanics to have it engaged so its better to wait until you actually need it.

My impression is, this video is incredibly misleading, because you basically never just push the button and it just enables? You have to turn the truck some? And this worked for you because you had it enabled, parked, disabled it, then started the video with the locker already aligned? (I just got a Tacoma and have so far failed to get the rear to lock.)

The diff wasn't locked when the video started. If you follow these steps it should work - if not you may want to check with the dealer to see if there is an issue with yours

@@DrivenCompanion Sorry, a great video but yes, turn the wheel and move a bit to engage the locker. If you know the locking mechanism, you will see why the truck needs to move to engage the locker.
