I'm not sure why there are so many negative comments because this video was great. Raise the standards for yourselves ladies and you will understand why she made this video. So, a big thank you for this video! Coming from a woman that cares about her appearance. It was helpful ❤
If you're dragging yourself from the gutter, maybe this is a "higher standard" for you. For the rest of us titles like "how to look expensive" scream "how to thrive in poverty".
@@zahre_mar I'm not sure about that - monochrome only looks put together if the pieces are well made. Monochrome high st clothes look... fine? But not *good*
@@MissDraiha I'm not disputing the importance of quality, I'm disappointed with the tagline. My mother ordered a custom wardrobe for every new school season but it was never with intention of "looking expensive". It was for "effortlessly put together".
Such a relief to hear a style advisor sound literate. Most of them make me wanna chuck my computer out the window in despair for the future of humanity. You are a natural beauty and speak well. Thank God for you! I subscribed about a minute into your video and will mine your stuff now.
@@AudreyCoyne I agree with BlindInTheSun. It's such a relief to find style videos that I can relate to. You make a lot of sense, you sound smart and quite pleasant, and you look elegant.

Sorry for taking up your valuable time.Im sure we will talk again.Keep up the good work.
Honestly this was so helpful, I’ve been interviewing for internships at architect companies and this is exactly the look I want because it’s classy, stylish and professional all in one , love it
It’s great to find a video that isnt “suggesting” people to buy an expensive bag or jacket to “look expensive”. I totally agree on the ballet shoes bit. I first noticed how flat-flat shoes can ruin an entire outfit when i saw it on some of my colleagues. Plus, it easily gets soaked even with a little rain. Flats with slightly thicker soles and a bit of heels are much more dependable and can work even in formal/corporate outfits.
Exactly. Also, I, too, hate when styling gurus make a video titled something along the lines of "How to look expensive when you're poor" or "How to look fashionable on a budget" and then proceed to make a case for why you gotta "buy into the brand", "the brand" being Gucci, YSL, Hermès or Louboutin.
You are so great! Too many of these fashionista types use a heavy hand with make up, flat ironing their hair, and balayage.. It so nice to see a fashionista who is not trendy but is classy, timeless, and ageless. embracing a natural look with a light hand of make up to bring out their natural beauty. Thank you!
Personally, I would add: choose natural fabrics over synthetics. Cotton, wool, linen or even viscose look a hundred times better than f.e. polyester, and they are often not a lot more expensive (it doesn't have to be silk ;)).
To add to that, there are lovely compassionate alternative choices to "wool, silk, leather, etc." Recently felt a modal top and loved it, so smooth! (It wasn't my personal style so passed on the purchase.)
Silk can be affordable if you buy in the thrift shop. Since the clothing style of manifactures in my country are not really “my style” I start to do thrifting, and yep 75% of my wardrobe full of vintage, rare items, and quality pieces ❤
Extremely excellent advice. Finally a video on this topic in which someone knows & gives serious, accurate, tasteful, experienced, adult advice! Many thanks.
@@AudreyCoyne Your voice was very nice then, but it sounds so calming and pretty now. And so your style, your video....You have evolved into an elegant, classy, sweet, and beautiful young woman.
I like how your video are postive, a pleasant change from the other self proclaimed style gurus on youtube who spend 90% of the video insulting other peoples styles rather than giving real advice
This is EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for. I just turned 30 and I still look like I’m 17 because of the clothing and accessories that I have! Slowly but surely, I can elevate myself and wardrobe with your tips!
Hi, Audrey. Love your channel! Please consider creating videos on 1. Classic glasses 2. 5 versatile pieces of jewelry 3. Tailoring vintage clothes. For example, I found a beautiful camel vintage coat that was two sizes too big 4. How to best wear belts 5. Choosing a watch for the long term 6. Ideas for those who are in a wheelchair, use a cane etc., on how to still accessorize without looking like too much 7. Ideas for different jewelry with different clothing 8. Pairing neutrals with each other. I want to wear gray, but always end up only wearing black or white 9. Shapewear tips 10. Finding the perfect modesty camisole 11. Clothing care kit necessities
Brilliant video, I think it's also worth noting that you should make sure everything is well ironed, a lovely dress or shirt will look tacky if it's not ironed as vice virsa with a cheaper shirt that's well kept
I agree 100% on matching shoes to handbag or shoes to belt. Some may say it is match-matchy, but when you are wearing monochromatic or simple pieces, the two matching accessories just finishes the whole outfit and makes it feel complete.
Subscribing after watching this. I love that there’s no distracting music going on. I can tell you actually care about what you’re saying and you’ve done some research! Very interesting and informative
Your styling tips are more of how a person should look presentable rather than expensive. I feel personal style can also make an individual look unique at the same time “expensive “ . Every individual has a personal style and one should follow it provided it ain’t “shabby”; and how not to look shabby the tips you give are really great. To look expensive you cant just merge with the crowd and loose your personal taste for stylish things !
These tips are really good. Not that I want to look expensive rather that my outfits are well thought of. Here in the PH, I can find sophisticated accessories that cost almost equivalent to $2
You can go to places like baclaran or divisoria in Manila. But if you want cleaner look, department stores also offer good types. Cheap stuff doesn't last that long but if you take good care of keeping them, i'd say your $2 can last long.
Sally Willow yet things that will be an investment (last forever) do. Just my experience...over 70 years. Have to be picky on what’s worth that long haul.
Austral Opithecus oh, thou who knows it all : lol Everyone gets to be is different in life! Some are interested in expressing their individuality artistically...others like to just put on what’s going to work and go. Not everyone WANTS to be noticed (true story). Some just want to dress for acceptance at workplace. There are as many reasons as people. It’s nice to allow for everyone, right? No one is above another. If you have a bad ass expression of your self go get on that! It’s wonderful. No need to look down on someone else’s way...it’s not a competition. ✌🏼
@@bourgeoisbarbie7734 Well.. At least you are authentic and rare while that woman is a wannabe fake billboard.. I hope she doesn't give you too much trouble.. Thank you for sharing your story!
I'm in my late 20's and have been struggling to dress as I'm at the stage where I want to look "expensive" but at the same time, look my age or younger and clean. I've noticed that people with money dress and carry clothes differently and not that I want to pretend be one, but the objective is to look good and feel good about myself. Thankful for this video!
THANK YOU for mentioning undergarments! Many ppl don’t realize how IMPORTANT they are! They are truly the foundation and the core of your outfit. Most women don’t even wear the correct bra size to begin with. PSA ladies please get measured once a year. And NOT at Victoria’s Secret, they measure inaccurately. Nordstrom is the best and most accurate! You can always find cheaper alternatives but PLEASE learn your accurate bra size!
I also like to have wallets match my purses, which I am told is "old school." To me, if you are carrying an expensive bag, the wallet should definitely match.
Please do not think that I want to offend you in any way, I am just curious in how for you being an intovert and having only grey clothes connect. I totally understand if this question is too personal and you don't answer!
Carlotta Jung thanks for asking. My opinion is that colors stand out more than grays. There’s not a lot of gray things in the wild that we find appetizing or are afraid of. So my thought is that if you don’t like to draw attention to yourself, you tend to stay away from bright colors and stay with neutrals, grays, and/or pastels.
I live in Panamá. Is always summer over here. I would like to see a video like this but for people who does not have the possibility of using clothe for winter
Well done. This is by far the best video on this I’ve seen in ages, and yay - no background music! The advice my sister taught me and that I always pass on include: buying the best quality, *classic* pieces you can afford and caring for them properly, so they last forever; sticking to natural fibers, like cotton/wool/silk/cashmere etc, except for a few specialized looks like a lame dress or other unique pieces; checking the quality of construction before buying - don’t buy disposable crap. Buying clothing in bulk and regularly and following trends compulsively is cheap and tacky. Figure out YOUR look (pinterest helps because over time you’ll gravitate to what is *you* and be able to look through and realize what *you* like) and create a wardrobe that is classic and quality but also very singularly *your* look - not what everyone else is doing. Be original.
@@solennj2238 Yes, I recently discovered this too. (The lingerie shop lady said "blue red". I love this because red makes me feel happy and beige makes me feel blah.
I don't know, if it's because your English or your voice but you sound so smooth and delicate even though you talk fast. And the tips are the best! Thank you!
No one is ever perfect...only the natural world has perfection in it. I am not criticizing you or anyone, but by saying or putting one person up to perfection makes others try to attain the unattainable and feel like they can never match up, whereas the person who is supposed to be "perfection" is always put up to trying to attain that impossible goal. There are so many other important goals to reach for in this world today. I do enjoy these videos and for someone so young, Audrey has an amazing sense of herself, of her style and I truly have learned more from watching her channel. As an aside, today I just received a beautiful Italian silk scarf made in 2007 for Talbots from Etsy and I just love it......Thank you Audrey for giving me the connection to Etsy....the scarf is like brand new, no pulls or stains....no wrinkles, and a nautical theme which I also love. Thanks again Audrey, you have a calming voice and give us ideas and an education in such a calm and relaxing way :)
Yes to matching your handbag to your shoes! My mother was THE most elegant woman and she taught me this simple style trick. I always get complemented on my look and often because of this. I look put together plain and simple.
You can not fake a sense of style and inner sophistication. its either there or not. Just feel comfortable in your own skin and you will look ,,expensive,, because the greatest treasure is YOU!
I don't know why, but I feel safe listening to her. Maybe it's her voice or the way she speaks that makes me I don't feel judged unlike when I was listening to some other channels. Love!
Most of these types of video are put together by tacky bints that wouldn't know 'expensive' or 'stylish' if it hit them in the face. However, you offer sensible advice that is as well put together as you clearly are. Thank you.
Audrey - your advice is a wonderful synthesis of everything I've learned and read over the years. Not only am I older, and heavier, my real issue is shoes. For years, I subscribed to "the shoes define the outfit"... even though I often had sit down jobs. I am very tall, and still often wore heels - when I was thin. Now, older - I have broken one ankle (while wearing sneakers) and broken the other foot (slippery floor), and have fallen arches. Basically, I can be in crippling pain, or I can look good. If you have any suggestions for supportive shoes that look good, esp. with classic tailored looks, wow - that could be a helpful video. Ballet flats, loafers, love them, not enough support. (Esp. when thinking of your traveling tips... so... walking all day...) It so often seems ALL the supportive shoes are so dowdy. Sigh. A series of tips for older women would be helpful. Your charm is contagious, and certainly confirms that charm, kindness, a good attitude, and a smile are the BEST fashion accessories.
This was so good! Classic ideas, new ideas, and ones that work for everyone that don't require spending money. I've seen similar videos that boil down to "just buy some $700 Louboutins and put your feet up". Looking expensive is so much more than flaunting labels and I'm glad someone finally gets that.
Thank you so much, Josephina! I never want someone to feel like they need to go broke for fashion after watching my videos and I'm so happy that message is coming across correctly! I hope you're having a wonderful day!
After not giving a hoot about my clothing and looking like a slob for most of my life, I feel the need to binge on all the best style advice now. I'm making up for lost time, so I don't just want to look good, I want to look my best.
I'd love to see something like this too! I mainly wear supportive sneakers because my feet suck and spending time in less supportive shoes is just too painful to be worth it.
The trick is the fit and the condition. If the sneakers are falling apart nothing is going to "save" the outfit. Sneakers in basic colors (black, white, navy, sand..) or as a pop of color (but just one or two colors). If you wear leggings the shirt has to be long and cover you in the back, for the queen of casual look. For jeans a basic color t-shirt/shirt/blouse if your shoes are not basic and vice versa. Tucked in. Almost always looks better. A nice black or brown belt. Clean and no tears, scuffs, dirt to be seen. You can play with texture and follow the rest of her advice, it can be applied here too :) Sorry if I was presumptuous, and you were looking for a bit more advanced advice.
.... I was thinking that same thing, as Annette .... For when you want to look " put together luxe" when being in something comfortable like a nice pair of sneakers, nice leggings, etc.
Love your videos! I’m petite and would love to see outfit with sneakers. My husband is a sneaker guy and he keeps asking me to wear outfits with sneakers 😊I’ve seen women look super tendry and chic with sneakers! Thank you so much! ❤
I don't know how your video ended up on my feed but it was a great video. As an animal activist out in the streets I pay 0 attention to what I wear (every and anything I wear is very original with different color animal hair, spit, mud and even blood if I am bitten or scratched.Your video is perfect for the rare times I go to events or gatherings.Very simple to understand even for a fashion dummy like myself.i hope you do one on colors, which colors you are allowed to wear with other colors.I have a big problem with that.
pattianne pascual but this is not a video on how to look well put together how to dress for an occasion this is a video on how to look expensive this has to do with price tag, I would always encourage someone to dress how you feel comfortable and the price not be the factor obviously if you have a budget then work within the budget but the price should never be the focus
I always match bag and shoes! I also buy luxury (Cashmere) and wait until I can afford it. The old saying, buy cheap, buy twice is so right. I’m 67 now and 5’ 10” tall. I’ve always been choosy about what I wear, I love simple lines too, unfussy. I’m loving your blogs, ❤️ thank you (from Gloucestershire UK) xxx
Audrey, I just stumbled onto your channel. I'm a seasoned woman who's always loved fashion and....I live in Charleston! So cool to find someone local who's spreading the good word about style, classic, always right style, not just trends. love what you do.
You really do a wonderful job of explaining these simple ways to present yourself in the best light. Good undergarments, clean, pressed, well fitting clothing pieces add so much to the complete package. Most people do not understand what they are responding to in another person's appearance and these are some critical points that add up to a great whole!
Your videos are fantastic! Will you please do a video on “fashion faux pas” so to speak? For example, wearing black and navy together, mixing different patterns, etc.
Hi, just came here to say that sometimes, if done with care, I find wearing black and navy can actually look really good ;) So maybe there could also be a video on how to take classic "faux pas" and turning them into a statement!
Emily Portscher The 1 thing that I'm not a fan of is white shoes or stilletoes, esp 4 evenings with a nice dress.. Maybe sometimes 4 summer days, wee strappy sandals, but even then I prefer a nude sandal & soo many nice nude or beige Sumner sandals to choose from..
A RU-vidr who isn't overly made up and actually knows what she's talking about? Here for it!!! I love the ballet flat tip. I bought a pair and when I wore them, felt like I was wearing bedroom slippers. My next pair will have a heel. Thank you!
Well done, very articulate. I like how you showed examples of what you said verbally. As a visual learner, I appreciate this. You are a natural teacher. New subbie.
Audrey, new subscriber here who loves your videos! Small but important quibble: the word "simplistic" does not mean the same thing as "simple". "Simplistic" means superficial or over-simplified. The word you want is just "simple". Because you are so careful about details, and because you speak so well, I think you would want to know this. Look it up and I am sure you will agree with me.
Hi, I’m from LA and I’m with you on everything except matching purse with shoes. There are specific outfits when it’s the only way to go. However, chic and expensive looking now calls for a standout bag or standout shoes and keeps from a boring look! 👛
I think all the recommendations are spot on. They truly add style and sophistication. Pity about the obsession for looking expensive... Pretending, rarely makes one happy, as it comes from the belief of "not being enough/equal". Any of the styles you suggested look fantastic whatever the cost.
Thank you so much for watching and I completely agree that it's a shame when we feel the need to be something we aren't. I use the turn of phrase "how to look expensive" because it's one that is commonly used here on RU-vid so it helps my video appear in search results, but really it just means how to dress in a way that's true to your personal style - without breaking the bank :)
Toozlepops absolutely, and the irony is that the richer someone is the less they care about looking expensive this obsession is with poor people wanting to look expensive or at best a very young money person who grew up or having to see other people have what they wanted but couldn’t have, The cost should never visa focus, you should wear what you want what makes you feel comfortable makes you feel beautiful what is of high quality and the focus should be productivity and if that happens to cost a little or a lot then Soviet Because cost for one thing does not equal the quality at all, there are so many brands that are even very high-end and they sell the cheapest junk, like coach and some other brands are on this thing where they literally sell these purses that are basically made out of this shiny plastic and their own well well over $100 easily a few hundred dollars and people don’t realize that it cost less than $.50 to make It’s not at all about the brand it’s about doing research and finding out where you’re going to get the best quality in terms of the actual materials as well as how it was made because even brands that are not considered openly fast fashion are basically just a little longer term fast fashion Unless you literally have your clothing made you’re still just buying a mass produced item that came off ha ha machine in a factory in China and depending on what label they put on it you either pay $50 or thousand dollars but the actual difference is very very minimal
'Expensive' might be better expressed as 'classy' or 'elegant'. It needs a bit of self-discipline, which is probably why Chanel said 'Elegance is choice - elegance is refusal', but the point is, you don't have to spend a lot of money, just exercise some taste and discretion! Rich people always look rich, but they aren't always elegant!
I just moved from SF to Phoenix and I have a hard time looking nice in the heat. I’m used to layering. Can you do a video on how to do that and still look classy? Thanks! ✨
I loved her tips and comments. I have been dressing this way of my own accord for decades. I have found by purchasing clothes that are Conservative, that I have amassed so many clothes in different sizes that look great over the years!
Just discovered you. I am a biiiiiig fan! Your voice is lovely and you speak so well! I love your classic look with a bit of trend! It’s what I go for at 55!!!❤️❤️❤️
First time watching you and I can not believe I did not find you earlier!!! Love ur tips and tricks!!! Finally my true match in clothing style!! Loved this video...🙏🏻
My Mom would be 96 if she were still here. Everything you say is what she taught me growing up! I’m 74 now. These “rules” are rules for a reason! They work across styles and decades! Breaking them is fun, too, but you have to know them first! Like knowing simple scales before you can compose a symphonic. Don’t wear white bras under a white shirt but a lacy red one for a special night out is GREAT! One is tacky and the other fun! Mom was ALWAYS a lady. That is how I dress, as well. I’m trying to teach younger women to save until they can afford a truly great coat, jacket, pair of black pants rather than buy 1o things on sale because they are cheap! It’s hard! Have you done any videos addressing that issue? I’ll look. Anyway, I adore your take on fashion. I adore YOU! 🌹
WOW this is MY style , I really love this kind of wardrobe ; I want to look elegant ans yes why not a bit "expensive" ( not too much ) I will be honest : I buy my clothes second hand (very good quality) in special "boutiques" because I'm not very very rich and I can not afford to buy them new in expensive stores, and there is nothing wrong with that I think ! And I also think "keep it simple" because less is more !!! And not too much make up and jewelry ! Sorry for my bad English ! Thank you very much for posting ! Many kind greetings from Marie in France !
1Fom Thanks, l do read labels but that only provides the basic info such as water temperature and to iron or not etc. I any hoping for more detailed tips. Do you have any?
Audrey, I just found your channel. I'm so glad I did. I LOVE your style! I've learned how to dress for the life I want on the budget I have: thrift, consignment, and a good tailor.
Audrey, as usual, you offer great tips. My only disagreement is likely due to age: the idea that half tucking looks classy. I hate it; to my old eyes (I'm 59), it seems sloppy and indecisive. Leave untucked to look more casual or tuck to look neater and somewhat dressy. Both tries to cover both bases and fails at each.
I'm 60 & I find the half-tuck - well done - so liberating! IE a longer tail on a shirt helps with a flat bum while the front half tuck shows you have a waist & lets a nice belt shine.
rneustel Agree. Many mature (50+) women get thick through the middle (even if their weight stays the same) and the natural waistline either rises or disappears entirely. I think the half tuck (as well as a popped collar) can wind up looking sloppy, not stylish. Audrey didn’t mention manicure in the vid but that’s another tiny thing, well kept hands, that contributes to the overall polished look of high end style.
Audrey, I agree wholeheartedly with all you said, but I also think we should make sure our clothes are somewhat wrinkle free and pet hair and lint are removed. We used to have a German Shepherd and boy was that difficult because she was a love and always by my side, thus "pet hair" which a constantly had to remove.
