@@johnpanicker7590 Not sure, I eat keto 99% of the time. I don't feel the need to cheat or take a break. I enjoy what I eat, and going off keto makes me feel like garbage. I carb load once a month with a giant bowl of rice (no fats). Which is only to restore glycogen stores. Or once in a while when there's a special occasion with friends or family. Even then, I try to minimize the carbs and sugar.

This is true. I was 170 cm and 92 kg at the beginning of January 2019. In my determination for losing weight but without diet or calorie knowledge for straight 40 days I ate nothing but tea and biscuit every day and small amount of vegetables, but quite amount of water (little did I know months later after gaining the knowledge I roughly had 300 calorie per day, crazy). At the end of 40th day I lost 10 kg, then proceed to eat normal for like a few days then start dieting again, this time with the proper way. I found that I'm not dropping weight as fast as before even I hit plateau for like 1 month(at 1500ish calorie), so I tried to "reset" my body caloric needs. After spending that one month with 1500, I pressed back my calorie to under 1000 cal, and the weight lost works again, every 2 weeks I lost 1 kg. At the end of october I was 65 kg, and I realized how small my arms were, in fact, I lost some of my muscle mass during those months of diet. This may be the results of me not tracking my macros and not doing any exercise at all, just pure diet. Lesson learned, and now I'm on the beginning of my journey to do body building, wish me luck.

Good video A quick point re diet breaks, there are actually two downsides. As mentioned the overall time to lose weight is longer. But the other thing to be aware of is that precisely BECAUSE diet breaks speed your metabolism back up, you will find the Diet/Deficit weeks more difficult than if you just went on a nonstop diet. Or to put it another way, imagine how the first week of a diet is generally the toughest then you "get used to it" (partly because your metabolism has slowed so you don't feel hungry as often). When you take diet breaks, every time you restart is like that first week. So yes diet breaks do work and they are good but there's a cost and the cost is that sticking to the diet is (non-intuitively) harder than if you don't take a break.

Thanks, I learn a ton from other fitness channels, however you put it all in one nice package, and you are excellent in your script writing and editing so that it is not confusing. This topic is what I'm looking for and been fearing. I finally got a point where I'm happy with my muscle gain(I'm not super strong, but I'm happy with my body). So next I wanted to lose fat to show it off more, and I can't seem to figure out my eating. This helped me actually realize I need to first increase my calorie intake actually and boost my metabolism, and then after that for a while, bring it back down. So this might actually get me more muscle gain first which is never a bad thing. I did hit a muscle gain limit, and I've been a chronic under eater. It was hard to just get 2500 calories in a day until very recently.

When you diet for a long time your body starts to get used to the amount of calories your eating and as a result you stop losing weight, the “diet break” surprises your body and your leptin levels go up and you start to lose weight again. Basically burn more kcal than you eat so that your body is in a negative for fat lost. Going guns blazing ain’t gonna work as sooner than later you will stop. Like the man said start of slowly.I guess everyone has different bodies that react differently. I really enjoyed that video. 💯

Hi Jeremy, what do you think the solution would be for a person who thinks they may be falling into mistake #2, or already making it, but wants to continue to lose body fat and retain muscle? Thanks for taking the time to make your videos, they are extremely helpful.

What if I diet for 5 days straight from Monday to Friday and then, on weekends I take a break from the diet (Saturday and Sunday)? Isnt similar to what you said? And by break I don't mean eating 5000 calories on weekends of course, maintenance or slightly above maintenance but healthy food cooked in the house. I also go to the gym regularly

Conflicting statements got me confused... Losing 1% weight per week could equate to a 1000 calorie deficit, yet the study shown says don't go below a 20% deficit, aka 500kcal. Pls someone explain

So I've been using Jeremy's Beginner Shred plan for about 2.5 weeks. I've had to adjust the plan's exercises and schedule due to using limited home equipment and my work schedule. Turns out that in all my past years of fitness attempts, I wasn't getting anywhere near enough protein. Weight loss has been a lot slower than I expected, but i think it's from muscle gains. I'm already noticeably stronger and it looks like the fat is melting off my body. As a 49 year old total noob to weight lifting fitness (I was always more of a runner/cyclist/cardio guy) I really like the program so far; much better than trainers I've used at my national chain gym.

2:56 - I never understood this argument. What do you need "leverage" for exactly? When you plateau? First off, you will plateau much, much later, second you will have lost much more fat at that point and third, as mentioned later in the video, you can simply do a diet break at that point and then resume the deficit. The only argument for this is in conjunction with your fist point, provided one views it even as a mistake and not simply a different strategy. If, with a larger deficit, I lose a tiny bit of muscle and a bit less fat, but can shave off 1/3 of the time I am cutting, that means I'm 1/3 faster out of a deficit, building muscle more efficiently, training better and feeling better. I really don't see these as clear cut, especially when using diet breaks intelligently.

I was thinking the same thing. The first study he showed, the people lost 5.5% body fat in just 40 days, compared to 60. They could use the extra 20 days to put on lean mass, while maintaining their aesthetics.
@Powerman80923
@Powerman80923 4 года назад
@@damianguzman391 5.5% weight lost, not fat. The fast group lost much less fat and also lost lean mass. Losing lean mass does not help the situation. The faster you go, the more lean mass you will lose. Go slow and take breaks is the key. Most people go crazy overeating on the breaks, which just negates some of the work that was done because they gain fat much faster than muscle while in a surplus, especially after dieting too fast and losing lean mass unnecessarily.

I'm a big fan of your science-based takes on fitness. Too much of what I see on the internet about fitness isn't science-based at all.

Jeremy, I have an important question, does our metabolism adapts faster when we increase or decrease our calorie. I'm asking this to see if my theory of having a cheat day could actually prevent weight plateaus
