I recently lost about 10 Kg which is over 20 pounds. I'd like to share with you how I gained weight and how I also lost it.
We talk about the troubles of being a senior monk, Buddhist Monk rules (vinaya), Buddhist Monk reflections on eating, and habits. Lastly, we talk about how the difference between the difficulty in losing weight compared to the ending of all suffering. In short there is no comparison.

Thank you for your perspective and sharing your experiences. After some injuries and surgery I gained a lot of weight in a short time because my body was used to a vey active life with a lot of sports before. As a buddhist with plans to ordain it's actually been a question how metabolism plays a role in a life with food in the monastery, sitting in meditation a lot, not having the same stress level of western corporate world anymore etc.

I'm glad you liked this dhamma talk. It is a different style than some of the other talks I have recently gave.

A pool? Strange donation to a monastery. I recall reading in the Vinaya the Buddha reprimanded some monks for swimming in the river.

Not really. If you go to ancient sri lanka ruins you will see Bathing ponds at many cultural heritage sites. Such as : Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. .. Here is a link for easy reference en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuttam_Pokuna

It should be known that we do indeed have rules related to "being in water". We cannot play in water. This is a rule. There are three types of covering of the body, "robes, water and sauna". You might think a sauna is odd too. We don't have one here, but other monasteries have saunas.

Are you not allowed to exercise as a Buddhist monk e.g doing yoga asanas stretching and other forms of workouts.

Can do any exercise. . aerobic exercise is best for health. Swimming is one of the best exercises, especially if you are older

Hello. I wonder if you’ll respond to me. I am a fan of Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. Are you a yongey? I am a very fat man. Someone might look at you and look at me, and say that I asked to be supersized. Haha. I am drawn more and more to the peace I experience as I meditate on impermanence, and I as meditate in general. And I feel more peace as I reflect on my gratitude. I believe I’ll never be able to be a monk, because I eat meat. But I love buddhism. I have just realized I love Tibetan buddhism specifically, because of Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. My apologies. Do you think the meditation on impermanence before meal time can help an obese man like myself? I may also like to ask you- what does the buddha say about challenging one’s self, and pushing one’s self past their limits?

@@BhanteSubhuti Ah. I apologize. In that case: What is Theravada?

@@biggSHNDO Theravada and Mahayana are two big sects of Buddhism. Theravada relies more on the Pali Canon, which is the earliest anthology of Buddhist texts available, while Mahayana has more focus on the Sutras, a later anthology, and more innovations like the Bodhisattva ideal (where you plan to be reborn intentionally to help other beings escape suffering, as opposed to achieving nirvana as an individual). Tibetan Buddhism is a sect of Mahayana. If you are a beginner to Buddhism, this distinction does not really matter. Just follow the teachings of whoever appeals to you and don't get caught up in what tradition is "right" or "wrong". Focus on happiness and being peacefully. The Buddha said that the path is a path of effort, meaning that our efforts are not in vain: that the end of suffering is a reality. However, it is also present-minded, where you accept the present as it is, not as you want it to be. Meditation on impermanence may bring you peace, and it might motivate you to take care of your impermanent body as a way of dealing with old age and sickness. However, it is skillful to pair this with compassion for oneself. You grow out of wisdom and goodwill for oneself; not out of hatred or greed. Just as for not eating meat, it is a natural byproduct of following the slow, gradual path. Make small sustainable changes that increase your contentment day-to-day. With goodwill, Asim

@@biggSHNDO Hi Shawn, I just saw your message. I know you're already familiar with Tibetan Buddhism, but I think a great place to start exploring is the book Open Heart, Clear Mind by Thubten Chodron. If you want to explore Theravada Buddhism specifically, I would recommend starting off with two sources: 1. Ajahn Brahm: he has a lot of down-to-earth, funny lectures 2. Thanissaro Bhikkhu: he has a lot of free written material on a website called dhammatalks When working with Theravada Buddhism, a lot of sources will focus on streamentry and jhanas. I would strongly recommend not getting too caught up in these sources, especially as a beginner, as these topics lead to obsession and mental suffering. Focus on cultivating generosity, patience, and kindness in one's thoughts, speech, and actions. Focus on contentment and happiness in the current moment, not attainment. Another good reading is the Four Noble Truths by Ajahn Sumedho. Like a lot of Thai Forest monks, his material is available for free online. (For context, Thai Forest is a specific tradition within Theravada Buddhism that tends to emphasize the importance of mindfulness and its monasteries are located in forests. There are a lot of English-speaking resources for this tradition, which is why all the Theravada sources I gave are Thai Forest.) If you have any other questions, feel free to message me. All the best, Asim
