ABOUT BECKET:
Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory
School of Dallas.
After graduating from Austin College in Texas, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his
dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a
production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion
shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap,
L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.

Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man.
He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years.
In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to
his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service.
After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his
life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality
was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count
everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences
helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally,
and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary
importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and
homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths
that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and
joyous.
He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of
Arts in Theology.
Becket’s book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption, with a
foreword by Francis Chan, published by Thomas Nelson, released July 30, 2019.

@MarybSimmons: agreed! I have several friends who are Jewish believers in the Messiah! They do not call themselves Christian, but Messianic Jews. Their families had a funeral ceremony for them (called stting Shiva). They won’t have anything to do with them because they are followers of the Messiah. Did these individuals collapse? No, they stayed strong to their commitment to the Messiah, even when their hearts are breaking! The same is true for us if we have non-Christian family members who reject us! Remember, Yeshua said we are not truly worthy of Him until we have had family members reject us!

Going to a wedding is not just a show of support for the people getting married, but for the union itself. It means you are cheering for them to succeed and will uphold the marriage in prayerful support. In other words, I believe as a Christian it would be wrong to attend a gay wedding.

When a believer of Jesus goes to an event that believer carries the Holy Spirit! So who is bigger and mightier? the Holy Spirit or the sinner? It is our responsibility to show love and compassion to those who don’t know Christ. If these folks are in our lives it’s to give introduction to who Jesus is!. John Bevere said, a person has to be stronger in their faith than the sinner is in their sin. so who’s stronger? That should be the answer to the question whether to attend an event or not. A person can love and not agree with choices.

I believe it’s more important to maintain “influence” or integrity with God than people, even those we deeply love. Our priority is to please Christ and not the world system, while having faith that God will change their hearts. How do you celebrate, with good conscience, what God calls an abomination? This is “ strange fire” and Christians must show love while heeding to the instructions of the Good Book. Yes it makes us unpopular but so was Jesus. He was so unpopular they nailed Him to the cross.

I think that the increase in young females saying there are "bi" can be partly due to the LGBT influence and their own misperceptions. Can two same sex friends hang out together without someone thinking, "Are they bi?" It feels like we've lost that sense of heterosexual friendship... Also, we have to have earlier conversations with our kids about sexuality because all of over North America LGBT dogma is being introduced in elementary schools in grade 1.

Love your "Christmas miracle" example.😆 Many times, I have said to all 3 of my kids (now 20, 20, & 17), "just because you stare at someone's legs or face or hair etc doesn't mean you are sexually attracted to them." We live in a very physique & beauty & selfie obsessed culture. Girls, especially, can suffer huge insecurities around physical appearance and spend too much time staring at females & images. I think it's gotta be confusing in these times, for teens. They could easily think they're gay when it could really be self-esteem issues.
@ga6589
@ga6589 2 года назад
The people who I know who are gay didn't get that way by staring at images. They knew it from a young age that they were different, but didn't have the maturity or experience to know how to express it or tell anyone. They were afraid to talk about it, because of the stigma associated with being GLBT. (That stigma is evident on this forum!) As a young female teen, I had insecurities about my appearance and would pour over magazine photos of slender female models, wishing I had all the attractive attributes I thought were important at the time. However, I never thought I might be gay or bi.
@ambers4524
@ambers4524 2 года назад
That’s because you didn’t have to accept or lob onto another identity to achieve that outcome or to even hold that outcome as a goal to obtain. You are a female, the model is a female, you didn’t have to change your gender to obtain the idea of beauty or being skinny or slender. When one looks at the idea of homosexuality and all the different things that go on within that lifestyle, there is no, I can be me and aspire to what you have (like being thin) without changing ones self and ones identity to match that of the person being idolized. It is the opposite, if I am agreeing and relating to you, I must be like you, therefore I must be gay (in order to relate and in turn become like that example) totally different psychological process. And not all instances will fit this example, obviously, but it’s a way to understand the topic. And I’m sorry you felt less than beautiful. I believe that positive parenting and healthy role models can play a large roll in keeping girls from feeling this way. I am so thankful my parents showed me Jesus and loved me and told me I was beautiful. I’m so sorry for those who didn’t have that.

@amandazplace my thoughts exactly. I think most kids feel awkward especially in their pre teens. And with all the emphasis on gender identity coming at them even in school it’s not surprising kids are thinking they really do have a choice to switch genders😧

I was married to a beautiful Christian man (we had 4 children together) who struggled daily w/ his sexuality mainly b/c of being sexually abused at 11 yrs old by an 18 yr old lifeguard; this led to early drug & alcohol abuse & self-loathing & confusion when being just tossed aside by the abuser. When we moved to California in 1980, that sin was celebrated & to hear “My grace is sufficient “ when ur feeling so alone(in the church ) in ur struggle is near impossible. Thank you for a thoughtful discussion on a timely topic. I’m a Christian with three adult LGBTQ family members who I love so much. Sooner or later a wedding is going to come up, and I feel like my relationship with these loved ones depends on how I handle this. I talked to an elder at church who urged me to pray on it and listen to the Holy Spirit. I love God and absolutely must make him #1. What would He have me do? I think of the loving Christian people who didn’t reject me when I was living crazy in the world. I think of my own many sins, and the grace that God has shown me. I disagree with his wedding answer because it's actually not a gray area. And you showing up at a "wedding" IS showing support for the lifestyle, regardless of how you justify it. If my child rejects me for standing on the truth of God's Word, that is her choice. It isn't my job to maintain my influence in her life. It is my job to pray for her salvation and her eyes to be opened. Jesus said that you aren't worthy of Him if you put these relationships before Him. I love my children by telling them the truth. I was asked this question, "would you attend my wedding?" I prayed before I answered and felt convicted in my spirit to simply say "No." She already knows what I believe. She knows she can come to my house, but not sleep over. If she asks me questions, I answer lovingly, calmly, truthfully. So I was disappointed by his answer that it's a gray area. God designed and defined marriage and He doesn't change. I am very solid on this answer. It's grievous. I have told my child that because I love her I am worried for the damage with which she is hurting herself that she may wake up and realize down the road, then wonder why no one warned her. I warned her lovingly up front but everyone else around her is affirming and celebrating her delusion and sin. Surprisingly, she hasn't rejected me. I truly think she is listening to me, the ONE person in her life willing to speak the truth in love while still not compromising.

What conditions did you lay out for your family in order for you to continue a relationship with them? Within my own extended family, there are a range of religious and political views. In order to maintain any kind of relationships, I've simply made those topics off-limits in my home. If there are conflicts of these sorts when we're in someone else's home, we leave. There is a gay couple in our family- we include them both in family gatherings. We simply don't make an issue of it, because IMO their sexuality doesn't define them as human beings. If anyone objects to their presence, that's their problem. I do avoid being around a neice and her husband, because they're toxic evangelicals and enjoy bringing up devisive topics and Bible thumping.

Thank you Becket - this was a brave and challenging interview, for you both to be involved in, but also for your viewers to listen to. I was in agreement with so much of what was said, but I would just like to make a general point, which hasn’t been discussed (as yet). I haven’t watched the whole interview. My son wanted to bring a girl home with him when he was in his early twenties, but he knew we weren’t happy for them to sleep in the same room. Obviously, we could not dictate to them (as adults) what they should do outside our home, but they knew our feelings re our own premises. The same would have applied if my son had been gay; he would have known that this was something we did not have to allow in our own home. If he chose to disregard our views, then I certainly would not have tried to be some sort of inspector. The most important aspect would have been that he knew where we stood. I understand that not all young people would have appreciated our point of view, but that is not our issue. The bible is there for everyone to access if they want to know what God wants for them. I hope this is not too wordy. God bless you both.

There is a massive connection between same sex attraction and childhood sexual abuse. I remember seeing a study that was carried out(A university in New Zealand I think) on this issue and the results were shocking. 90% of those they studied, who identified as being gay, had suffered childhood sexual abuse. That study was attacked and buried because it spoke a truth the world didn't want to confront. Its not widely publicised but you can find that study online with a bit if digging.

Wow, just when I thought there may be some cases that may be out of reach for God (silly, I know!!), I hear Caleb’s amazing testimony. Not because he wasn’t ‘saveable’ but because sometimes we have a lack of faith that is so huge that we think ‘no way that person will want to give up their lifestyle for Christ’. Lord, please forgive me for not always seeing your immeasurable worth and believing that with God all things are possible, no matter how hard our hearts may be!!!

I'm curious what he might suggest when being asked to attend a "christian" gay wedding. To many, such a union is holy and sacred. As a Christian, I struggle to know how to respond to such an invitation. Asking questions is a great first step, but I'm inclined to not attend ever in this situation, as I don't want to give the impression to others (and the couple) present that such a marriage is indeed a sacrament and that the church as a whole is in favour of this. Sadly, the church has become incredibly divided on this and some evangelical churches are affirming the idea of "christian gay marriage".

You're overthinking this. If you're not comfortable with such a wedding, simply RSVP not attending. I've yet to see a couple, gay or straight, ask for a reason why an invitation is declined. You do not need to explain yourself, although it sounds a bit like that's what you want to do. Anyway, no one needs your affirmation to get married and it's likely a gay couple is not interested in hearing your moral objections.

Thank you! The first gay man we got to know as kids was attending my dads ministry. I was a nonbeliever in Christ but a false prophet of the false dichotomy that no one would choose that lifestyle of being so rejected so they must be born that way. I wondered why most Christians would reject people born like this or for my dad believe they were living in sin. This man was different to the gay men who would hang at the local toilets growing up. Or maybe I saw him differently because I allowed myself to connect with him. He contracted AIDS and was rejected by his gay community. He eventually came to die at the end of his life downstairs at the ministry because it was the only place he felt loved. My dad apparently cleaned up the biological results of someone dying. Messy love indeed! Dad never told us that story but mum eventually told me when I was trying to understand the church position. The world has done a good job in telling people who are different that Christianity hates them and that there is a LGBTQ community who will love and celebrate them just as they are and as Christians we’ve found it hard to demonstrate love to people who live a life inconsistent with our beliefs. These discussions can help us do so. Thank you.

Attending a wedding IS by default affirming the union. It was unbelievably painful, but I could not attend my straight sister’s secular wedding ceremony. To this day she still says (regarding me), “you may not like what she says, but she’s the real deal and willing to be hated by others so as not to displease Christ.” Praise God, she renewed her vows in the Church, in front of God. Truly LOVING someone sometimes means being very unpopular, but if we really have their salvation in mind, God uses our sacrifices and sufferings to bless them in His time.

Thank you guys so much for tackling these questions! I so value hearing your perspectives!! I have a close friend (and there are more kids that my are my daughter's friends) whose daughter has just become a "they", and my heart for my friend and her family (I have known them for ages!) was about parents being anchors for their kids. When we were talking about what she should do, I said to her something like, "You could say, 'Out of respect for you, I will call you ____, but I want you to know, it's not what I believe about you. I believe God made you in His image as a wonderful female, etc., etc." And of course the timing of what we can say depends on the daughter/son and what they can hear. I just feel so much that Christian parents don't realize how they may be their kids "drift" into whatever is out there and we are not affirming for our kids and anchoring them in what God has already done in them and made in them.

I disagree about when someone tells you they are gay. What would Jesus do? I think he would tell them the spiritual truth. That God Loves them and that I love you too, but that it is not God’s plan for them. What if they die before you get to tell them? What if you never see them again? What if you were the only person that would have told them?

Caleb definitely comes from an out of the box mindset in comparison to most Christians. I kind of really appreciated his thought processing. Especially, because it comes from a place of his life experiences. What I agree with is Caleb’s desire to meet this culture with the gospel. The culture is evolving constantly, but the truth, unchanging. God needs His genuine ambassadors to hold the banner of love and truth up high, so those living in darkness can permanently walk towards the light of Christ. I know that the gospel is unwavering. But how it’s truth is shared, changes with the individual and their unique life. Wisdom is necessary at all points. Love all your comments. Learning all the time. Thanks.

We don't have gay kids, thank God for His grace, but we would have loved them the sane, but would never have gone to the wedding, that would, in our minds, just affirm their choices that they would know go against what we've taught them. It would be their choice to reject the gospel and they would have to bear the consequences thereof. We would still love them and welcome them, but not as a married couple, they'd have to sleep somewhere else, not in our home.

I totally disagree with Caleb. There’s no gray area in whether to attend a gay wedding or not. As a believer, you should NOT go to a Gay wedding because even though in your heart you aren’t supporting the union, you going still is a bad testimony and God calls us not to compromise. We must stand our ground. Yes we may lose the friendship but it’s about pleasing Christ not the people. Attending it is still showing you support it.
