It was a dream to me getting into straight shaving. When I moved to Germany I had to go ahead and give myself a present! You taught me a LOT all these 4 years I've been following you. Thanks a lot! Have a great weekend.
Thanks Stallion!! I've loved using my straight since I started..... what I love most is it feels like taking a time out from your daily bs to just relax.
Good video, good tips, and awesome encouragement! I don't have a straight (but maybe I will now!), but I use Ballistol to oil my hand tools in the garage and it works great to keep them in top shape for the next task.
I strop my knives, have for years, you learn, and then you get confidence. You said it well, the edge should only touch your face and the strop..... Great video, thanks for posting it! The red lights look great....
I like the smell of Ballistol I use it on all my firearms. Mineral oil on my straight razors. Whatever little oil is on the blade I leave it on there when I use my leather strop for conditioning the leather.
Great video. I appreciate these type with tips and such. I got a laugh out of donkey ass. Anyone using donkey ass for anything, should not even think about straight razor shaving haha. Steve
The funny thing is, if you start slow, the learning curve really isn’t a bid deal. I haven’t shaved with a cartridge in I don’t even know how long. It never was actually my main shave. But, to get a good shave on a cartridge, or close i should say, it isn’t that much less time. It is however way less healthy, sexy or cool.
Good info, buddy! I agree... I use 50:50 food grad mineral oil, and mineral spirits. I found just mineral oil too thick,so I think it with mineral spirits..
Stallion you are the one I blame the most for me starting straight razor shaving about 7 years ago. Did nothing but straight shaves for the first 4 years.
@AnthonyEspositoTheStallion runs smooth,no sputtering or shaking... got a question, I've been looking for a tear drop style blade or wedge my grandfather had one.but I can't find one cause I don't know the style of blade it is. It is wider at the toe slim at the heal round toe and I believe carbon steel. You have any clue..I google but I get all new blades.
@john_dougg811 any blade that's wider at the toe is a result of honing, they didn't come through like that when they were new. Just look for a wedge or near wedge in the description. The feel of the shave is different between wedges/near wedges than say a full hollow, in my opinion. But I always say, TRY EVERYTHING YOURSELF, don't take anyone's word as gospel, ALWAYS try stuff yourself !!
I've been using gold dollar they are ok. Pain in the rear to keep sharp. Idk if it's the stainless steel .I sent one in to get honed and about same result. So I'm looking to try out a different steel maybe carbon steel. I will see if I can find what I'm looking for.
I have a cheap blade. It works fine. I shave about 3 times a week. I go about six weeks before the strop doesn't bring it up to snuff. That is when i co dition my strop. That is usually good for another couple weeks. Then I have to take it to the hone stone. That is a cheap hardware stor item, as well. I spend about two minutes honing- that's it. Then I only need strop for another couple of months. That's been the deal for the same blade for years.
I know this is a late comment but I can use a normal knife sharpener to sharpen it right? This is my first time with a normal straight razor and not a disposable one
Do you home before every shave or after a few? I just started and did my 3rd shave. I’m giving it about a week in between shaves so the knicks heal up before the next shave. It’s a cheap blade and I’m wondering if that’s why I don’t feel the shave is as close as my first one
One other thing Bro, a straight razor is all about the edge, NOT how nice it is !! Make sure it's honed by someone who knows how to hone and knows what their doing !!
What do you do if your straight razor gets black marks over time (water stains and such I think)? If I'm using is regularly should I ever oil it or is that just for long storage?
I do oil my blades after each use !! I've never experienced water spots !! I've seen them on blades of other people's, but again never experienced it myself !!
Hey wuddup Ant , I heard a while back u sell Gold Dollars already honed and stropped. I want to get one. Can I get your email? I’ve been Traditional WetShaving for over 3 years and have all the vintage Gillette’s and Modern ones as well. When it comes to straights I have a Shavette and a Kamasori style Shavette that takes a Feather Artist Club Blade. Ive been at the point to where I don’t get nicks or cuts anymore with them but want to get a real one. Thanks a lot -Also what’s a good beginner Strop you’d recommend. Nothing crazy ~Mike 🌹
Yes, but only expensive Damascus is good, cheap Damascus is junk !! Personally, it just looks cool and does nothing for performance !! And it's usually only on customs and I'm not a customs fan !!
