@@RoofingInsights3.0 Really? So three guys come and set up the grounds, tear off, prep, load it, then shingle it, then clean up? On a 8 -10 pitch and its between 40-45 sq? It really depends. I’ve done a 100 square tear off with A total of a five man crew in one day. The section was 8/12 and it was literally a 100 square side wide open. Not so much as a soil stack. Obviously if it was cut up, not a chance in hell.

I’m a owner salesman and sell about $1.5mil a year. My expenses are about $2,500 a month. My margin is about 35-40% gross and 22% net.

My sub made $1mil in 2020 charging $100 per square. The price per square in North Carolina on the low side is $75 on the high side is $120 and average is $90-$110. My sub works for other companies but is my primary installer. I paid him $500,000 last year and so did 3 other companies. He was doing 7-10 roofs a week. Installers make a lot of money if they have a good crew and stay busy.

I’m a new contractor and I’ve been paying myself as a salesman rather than salary. This allows me a few things. The ability to get used to paying a sales person, labor and materials on a job. It also allows me to keep my net much higher and absorb any hiccups I may have. I only have cash accounts with suppliers. And by doing that I should be able to pay myself a draw during slower times and transition to a salary when I hire salesman.

If there is one thing I havent really noticed on that list is. What most people call BROKER for roofing work. That happens alot here in Texas and especially Florida as well. Mainly in the Spanish speaking community. Have u run into anything like that before as someone getting the work to just pass it on to the actual roofing crew??

Just doing repairs you can clear 100k net by yourself. I think a lot of guys overlook that. Repair callouts can sometimes turn into full roofs, and if not, they'll likely call you back when they are ready for a full job.
@RoofingInsights3.0
@RoofingInsights3.0 3 года назад
Absolutely agree with you. Roofing repairs are the best opportunity for individual installers, fast turn around, great profit margins, I would still work with company to provide jobs, if you start selling your repair jobs you will be spreading yourself too thin fast
@Maynardd
@Maynardd 3 года назад
Absolutely! Service and repairs is where it is. I’ve made over $120,000 a year every year for the last four years as an employee.. We run at 50 to 55% profit margin’s, we service over 2000 buildings. Every now and again we land the reroof which is technically not even our goal. Our goal is to extend the roof life. We do about 12 million a year in business with 18 to 20 men in the field. All doing service!

@@mikeylopez9625 Overcharging? It’s called being in the union, you know, actually getting paid what you should be getting paid, compared to any other trade roofers are the bottom of the barrel when it comes to pay. Not to mention the Health insurance, pension, paid vacations. What do you think, we waste our time with residential roofing? We deal with corporations, Walmarts, fast food chains, distribution centers. And we know everything there is to know about roofing. We are 100% reliable and available 24 hours a day seven days a week. And you think it’s over charging? You keep allowing your employer to hold you back and pay you peanuts. By the way, it’s been a year since my last post. I actually made $149,000 this year. bonuses also contribute to this. A lot depends on who it is you are working for. We are 24/7, 365. I hear it from people like you all the time, you’re all battling for scraps at the bottom lowering your prices because you fail to show value.

Breaking 6 figures is super achievable these days. I install shingles for a small-medium sized contactor here in Florida. Good workers are extremely scarce right now. I built a good reputation with the contractor over 8 years. I started at $30 a square and I currently make $60 a square just to nail back on. I have one good guy I work every day that I pay $30 a square and occasionally work another on bigger jobs or to finish off punch out work while I start a new job. At minimum, I nail on 10 squares which is $600 dollars, plus my guys 10 squares, which I profit $300 after paying him. Since the contrator is smaller, most of the jobs are local, usually never more than 30 miles away. I work about 250 days a year, never more than 40 hours a week. Some days on bigger jobs I can gross $1200 a day if I work 2 guys. At minimum, 225,000 a year gross. My main man had $76,000 on his W-2 last year. Around $5200 a year in gas, and somewhere between $30-40,000 for other expenses. So 180,000 minus around 22% average tax. Thats around $140,000 a year take home, minimum.

Dimitri, I am looking to transition from production to sales after me and my fiancé get married. I’ve been doing project managing for a big company in my area for the past, almost 4 years and they aren’t very ecstatic about anyone from production moving to try out sales. Is there any tips/advice or could you make a video on this subject? I do not have any experience in sales but I am very confident in what I know and can answer and walk through any questions homeowners have, which makes me feel like I can do sales no problem. Thank you in advance Dimitri!

Off of "revenue" is a really wide open way to phrase what youre trying to say. Off of $1M in gross sales, you may get North of $250k if you are a one man operation, carry the minimum general liability policy, youre handling all sales, and subbing labor to crews with their own workers comp. That's still a stretch though.

You need to hire help and focus on growing your business... gotta promote the keys to sales is promotion if you do a roof have decals on everything in the yard, signs in the yard, take pictures post to social media blast your quality work everywhere and drive it that your the best roofer around but your work has to be at a standard everyone would want... I can mow yards and make 100k a year but I’m promoting everything I do... you need hired help first because it sounds like just you and your brother are spending way too much time on one roof it’s hard to promote on the weekend if your working all week... referrals are the best form of advertisement because it’s free but you and your brother can’t compete against an owner that doesn’t split anything and has a full crew of 4 guys... Promote your business 100k should be a goal for you guys to even be able to make ends meet... if you have clear profit of 100k that’s 50k a piece that’s what most people’s labor hands make a year...

Wanna make six figures a year, actually well into the six figures a year, stop being ripped off by your employers paying you by the square, or under paying you by the hour. Join a union and make $55 an hour, pension, and some of the best health insurance on the planet that will cover your entire family as well without costing you a dime. And all the time and a half you could ask for. By choice I work about 300 hours of time and a half a year. You do the math.
@RoofingInsights3.0
@RoofingInsights3.0 3 года назад
Didn’t know you worked for union! Thanks for sharing!! How does someone join union? What’s the process?
@Maynardd
@Maynardd 3 года назад
Roofing Insights there’s a few different ways. But the easiest way is this. You get hired at a union company. You automatically are paid journeymen scale. Even if you’re not a journeyman. Then you have to go get tested at the union and depending on your skill level you’ll be labeled a first, second, third, fourth year, or journeyman. If you test below a journeyman, your pay will be adjusted to whatever you tested at. And you’ll move up a position every year until you are a journeyman. If you can show you have at least five years of roofing experience you’re automatically a journeyman. The union pay scale is set. Your employer must pay you this scale, but there are many employers that will pay you over scale like I make. Where I live in the Chicagoland area union scale is $48.60 an hour. But I make 55. Your employer can pay whatever he wants as long as it is no less than the union scale. There are raises every single year, sometimes two which is in the union contract. Your employer has no choice but to pay these raises . And here’s the good part, if you find your way into a margin-based company, the more money the company pays you, the more money they make. I work for a margin-based company. But Then you have those nonunion people that say it’s a rip off because I pay about $3000 a year and union dues. For starters it’s a tax write off, second, I have no problem paying that $3000 a year as I make about $125,000 a year. It’s really that simple.
