Definitely! I don't think I'll do 4 in 1 again. That 6 in 1 piece from the video lays at my desk and I play around with it all the time because it feels so smooth even though it's metal
I appreciate this video. Making a 6 in 1 riveted mail standard and this was super helpful. A warning though, riveted rings are a massive pain to thread through existing weaves if fixing mistakes or fusing segments, so you really want to get it right the first time and grow it outwards like here.
Thank you! I've always been thinking about making some armor for my forging gloves (just for the sake of it), but I'd been doubting at making plate armor or some chainmail. This type of chainmail seems a lot easier to start with, as plate armor would require some very specific shaping. Chainmail is more or less making a sheet of it, and then add a bit wherever it needs some.
I've only done one 4 in 1 maile that was many years ago, it was horrible because of ring size, was a bit big and it should've been 6 in 1. I may try it someday again.
This is very cool. Curious as I'm new to learning about chainmail right now, if you solder the ends of each ring would it make it stronger to not fall apart? Or is that just an unnecessary step? I've just heard how if its not riveted then it could fall apart. That's why I'm curious about solder instead to keep a clean look of the rings. Great videos. Looking forward to future ones.😎🤘
It took months, even years for a chain mail smith to make a chain mail gainers, so I honestly don’t think a glove will be that much of a problem, just make sure to rivet the chain mail!
whenever i get to 0:41 and loop the 2 rings while adding 4 the pattern gets all bunched up for me and i cant figure out what im doing wrong. im using 16 gauge 12mm rings
Hey sorry I’m late. Maybe I misunderstood but you only have to loop 1 link through the 4 highlighted and then add 2 rings to that link before closing it. Adding 2 links is only necessary for the first string
Good question and I honestly don’t know. Couldn’t find anything with a quick google search but I guess when putting 4 in 1 they probably tested out other numbers as well
@@NoBullTutorial true. I have never worn a 6in1 mail. Do we know, maybe from our historical re-enactors, how 6in1 feels in comparison to 4in1? Is a full hauberk significantly heavier and more stiff so much so that it starts hindering ur fighting abilities or is the different in comfort and flexibility not that much?
This is butted chainmail. 4 in 1, 6 in 1, 8 in 1, it will NOT be a good armor. What you want is "riveted mail" which will be historical, and effective armor.
@@Karznax sorry, this makes no sense. 4in1 is definately historical. It describes, together with 6in1 and 8in1, how the rings are connected to other rings. "Riveted" however, together with "butted" ( and I think there is at least one additional technique) , on the other side describe how one ring is connected to its two ends. These are two different aspects. Both aspects can be combined at will.
I'm currently making small patches of riveted maille for a future video. Once I tested out different weaving techniques to see which is the fastest, I'll post a tutorial ✌
