Have you ever wanted to make bread, or cake, or brownies while backpacking? Well, now you can! This is a replacement for the Outback Oven, which is no longer available. The Outback oven was an incredible oven that was both light weight and made amazing pizzas, cheese breads and all kinds of other amazing dishes. The one I show you to make is even lighter! A special thank you to Greg Nelson, who pushed me to make this video. And more recently to @bubsy420 for giving me the final push to complete it and upload it! It

Awesome! I still have an 8”, 10”, and 12” backpacker ovens from Outback Oven. So great! Lasagna, pizza, biscuits, muffins, bread, brownies, choc chip cookies…the best!

Wow, you got the whole set! Yeah, I wish they still sold them as it is not practical for most people to make their own. Enjoy your yummy meals!

Your thread choices were what I was curious about. It would likely work as well - or better - to use fine gauge beading wire (stainless steel) and a large eye needle to hand sew - or simply staple it with a standard plier stapler (not a desktop stapler or a staple gun) Both options would be cheaper and non-melt. I have a “fancy” Omnia oven, and a two DIY versions - made from thrifted components. It has been the insulation/cosy that has had me stumped.

Excellent video! I agree, I would use the thinner one to make it less bulky for backpacking. I think I will try and make one out of a paper template so I can see how big the hole at the top will be and then adjust.

I think my biggest issue was that I divided wrong, so I was short one fold. But yes, a template is a very smart way to go!

Nomex is the material that firefighters wear on their head. It's called a nomex hood. Should work excellent for this type of application.

I'm thinkinking a dollar store foil Bundt pan turned upside down, would sub for the felt when car camping, but might be a little fragile for backpacking. I'm going try it anyway at home & maybe out on the trail in a few months.

That is a good idea! I have used pie pan lids for years and they do okay. Not sure how fragile the Bundt pans are though. Let me know how it goes!

I’d love to know the weight of those setups. Found a premade camping oven for 500g and a pressure cooker that doesn’t weight much more than that

Just wanted to let you know you can still buy a version of the silver ovens. Camp Chef made them for a while and there is a "volcano outdoors" on Amazon that makes one. It's bigger, for 12" Dutch ovens on a camp stove I believe. But a great video. I'd gotten some carbon felt for another project but the "what thread could I use" stopped me. Gonna have to give this a try. Thanks!

Thanks for the info! The Volcano Outdoors cover is huge! A little big for backpacking, but good to know it is out there. I couldn't find the camp chef model. Do you have a link? Thanks!

@@backcountrycuisine6226 no. Camp Chef had two models but they stopped making them a while back. I have one of the smaller ones that is designed for a 10" dutch oven I believe. I use it with my small frybake and it works well.

Any recommendations on a budget friendly pack? looking to piece together a little 48 hour survival bag for emergencies!

I thought I had already responded to you! So sorry!!! Hey Eli! Great to hear from you! As for budget friendly gear. The REI branded gear is pretty affordable if you are looking to get something new. The trail break 60 is $150 and wears pretty good. There flash series of packs are a little more expensive, but they are lighter. Very popular. Also, check out used gear stores (Goodwill included). It takes a little longer to find something that fits and is in decent shape, but you can get an incredible deal. If you are in Eugene, Eugene Gear Traders is a great place to look too. Great hearing from you! Take care!

Where are you getting your carbon felt? Trying to make this and having a hard time finding the carbon felt. I am excited to make this!

You can sometimes find it at a plumbing supply store (Hardware store), but that has been hit or miss for me. Amazon has been the easiest for me to get. If you look up “Carbon Felt Blanket”, you can find all kinds of different dimensions. I usually get a little larger piece, so I can be sure to have extra for random projects like alcohol stoves and things. Let me know if this does not work for you and you want me to send a link. I would love to hear how it turns out!! :)

I just use a pie pan. So go get yourself a pie, eat it, and then use the pan as a lid. If you want to get extra fancy, you can put some foil tape on the lid as a handle. That’s it! Let me know if that doesn’t make sense. Cheers, Dustin
