There's many ways to build a hive although personally I don't find with complicated for someone who knows basic carpentry I think alot would enjoy doing it themselves. Although it's definitely not for everyone.

Damn fine job making your hive bodies out of real wood. If you had a real good table saw you could make a sliding gizmo to cut those box joint cuts and a good dado set. But you have the right idea. I like the good old ways myself. Free lumber and boards can be had fairly easily. Glue and biscuits are cheap enough. Good tools are always an investment in a craftsman's shop. Better to buy tools than to pay for someone else's labor at a high price.

@ascerbic2u
@ascerbic2u 5 лет назад
Fantastic. I am now convinced. I will start saving up to buy a biscuit cutter, scroll saw, band saw, or planer, chisels glue, screws and ancillary equipment, probably a mortiser selection of clamps and workshop to house it all. Not forgetting to install electricity and a kettle so I can have a brew whilst waiting for the glue to dry. Or should I just buy a hive? Probably not as satisfying but ill go the second route. Great video though.
@ScrapwoodCity
@ScrapwoodCity 5 лет назад
lol! This is a video mate, you don't have to reproduce it in real life. I just had the urge to make a hive just to study the way it's made. When you trapped the wood between the saw blade and the fence at 6:22 in the video, it created a very dangerous situation. The wood can bind and shoot out the back at high speed. The scar on my belly is an indication I learned the hard way. Nice box, be careful. Great use of innovative solutions to achieve results.

kinda got the jist of it. got a perfect place in the woods. it's flourishing nicely will flowers, i'm attempting to craft some natural mead from pure honey, yeast, and maybe berries. recently got into glassblowing too, made some nice brown bottles with corks. wouldn't you like to bite off the top of a bottle and slam down a brew. you'd be a lot warmer and happier will a belly full of mead.

I may have to just buy one because I have absolutely no idea what most of the description means. ha 😝 one question though for if I do end up building a much simpler version... why did you do the interlocking sides instead of just nailing the flat edges of wood? hope the question makes sense.. I have no woodworking experience whatsoever

Obviously a Union Worker - taking the longest and most inefficient route to make something that could have been done in 1/3 the time. Side-note biscuits don't make a stronger joint. But they do add material and cost, so another union move. :)

Priced 1 x 12 lumber - ouch! Your approach is definitely more cost effective. Only concern would be if the seams were to gap when the wood expands/contracts from the weather. Wondering if tongue and groove or lap joints might be better because of that. Your handle jig is genius!
@FloryJohann
@FloryJohann 7 лет назад
Today was the second time I bought a 1x12 by 8 foot long board from lowes hardware for $13 and some change to make a deep body. For that price there is no need to do all that work with joining the small boards. One board like this will make a deep body and you have some left over. With 2 board you have enough for 2 deep bodies and from the leftovers to make the roof. That handle jig was copied from other websites, with a possibility from you-tube.

I wish you included explanations. I am a complete newbie and don't even know what some of those tools are. A quick explanation of the step, tools, and measurements would really be helpful.

You can find a link in the description of the video that leads to blog article with much more info on the build. But no measurements. Measurements are pretty standard and you will easily find them with google search.
