For example, if the intruder quickly cuts through the bathroom and kitchen, he can appear at my rear before I’m able to establish higher ground or a better position. If I had a phalanx or something I’d be protected, but phalanxes usually don’t perform well indoors. Maybe something more modern and compact would be better, like a mini gun?

You need an indirect firing siege mortar for home defense? If your intruder is already in the house, you need to be planning yourself for some hand-to-hand combat. As for the other comment about making up for a low rate of fire by using multiple mortars? This would only work if you had help manning the position; if reloading one is time consuming, reloading 5 would take 6 times as long working alone. And who would be observing and calling out corrections while you're on the ground inputting those adjustments and calculating powder charges? There's a reason why these are military weapons, it requires an army to properly employ them. A recoilless rifle on the other hand is exactly what you'd be looking for to fulfill an extreme home defense network; add some barbed wire and mines and you'd be untouchable to any non-military intruder.
