How to Make a Bodysurf Handplane 

We’re excited to share this step-by-step DIY tutorial on how to make a bodysurfing handplane using simple tools and repurposed materials.
While having a handplane is not necessary to bodysurfing successfully, it can help and many people do enjoy the experience of gliding down a wave with a handplane.
In addition, you don’t even need to go out and purchase a handplane - you can make your own with fairly basic materials and tools.
TOOLS & MATERIALS 🔨
• Jigsaw, random orbit sander, 60 & 100 grit sandpaper, marine varnish, protective eyewear, respiratory mask
• Repurposed plank of wood, broken ankle leash or old belt (for hand strap), stainless steel screws

00:05 - Step 1️⃣: When crafting your own bodysurfing handplane, the first thing you need to do is find a good plank of wood. Look for wood that is light and water-resistant such as teak, balsa, pine, etc.
00:18 - Step 2️⃣: Your next step is to draw a symmetrical outline of your handplane design template on the plank of wood, and then cut along the lines using a jigsaw.
00:31 - Step 3️⃣: Once you’ve made your initial rough cut, grab a respiratory mask, some protective eyewear, and a random orbit sander to clean up the edges of your handplane.
00:43 - Step 4️⃣: During the first sanding phase, you’ll want to use 60 grit sandpaper to turn down the edges of your handplane and create some nice, thin rails. Then, switch over to 100 grit sandpaper to clean up your lines and make the wood smooth to the touch.
01:12 - Step 5️⃣: During the final sanding phase, I recommend replacing the machine sander with your hand for closer attention to detail.
01:22 - Step 6️⃣: Once the handplane is sanded down to your liking, the last step is to seal the wood with varnish and add a handstrap - which can be fashioned out of an old belt or even a broken ankle leash.
