FOR MATERIALS USED:
For the signatures/pages: Regular copier paper
Thread: Waxed linen thread (you can buy unwaxed & use a candle or bees wax to wax your own)
Needle: You can buy Bookbinding needles but I also use a large embroidery or darning needle & remove the pointy tip
Book Covers: For this particular book I used 2mm Mount Board. It is predominantly used by photographers on the back of photos & frames therefore it is a bit more expensive than just plain chipboard. Mount Board is basically just chipboard with white coated paper on both sides. As its more expensive, I tend to now buy regular 2mm chipboard. You can use cereal boxes or any packaging you want. Glue a few pieces together to make it thicker & they work perfectly fine for book covers.
Glue: PVA white Glue
Bone Folder: Essential tool in my opinion but if you don't have one, use the end of a ruler or scissors. But a bone folder is a wonderful tool for bookbinding
Clamps: You can use any clamps, bulldog clips etc.
Also a book press is even better, but these clamps are the cheaper alternative .
Have fun & as always if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. Lee x

I'm brand new to binding, and I'm hoping to give it a go so I can save certain works from online. I'm so glad you made this video, I've only been picking up basics terminology from what I've watched so far. Your video actually made me feel rather confident!

Oh I'm so happy that my video has given you a bit of confidence. I'm no expert, believe me...I learn something new with every book I make. I'm self taught but I hope you have found some use from the video. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment. Lee :)

Lol, thank you so much.....if there's one thing Northern Irish people do a lot of, it's using different expressions, teehee. Hope you have fun making your own book. Give me a shout should you have any questions. Lee :)

@@CraftyLoops ok, so here’s my first: I’ve seen another working on a 2 inch thick book quite worn & damaged. She changed the covers & sanded the pages. However, when gluing the covers to the book, she also glued the spine to the cover. So my question is, why glue some spines and not some others? Have a nice day & thanks.

@@maxmedia6524 Did she glue the actual spine of the book to the cover, or was the signature spine piece glued to the spine cover? If it was the actual books spine piece, it does get glued to the cover along with your front and back cover. Now, if it was the actual signatures spine piece being glued to the spine cover piece, that's a different story. I'm not sure why they would glue the signatures to the spine, if I'm honest. It definitely makes the book much more difficult to open and it probably won't lay as flat either. And if the book is being used a lot, the spine glue could crack and will eventually come away from the spine in time. But then everyone learns differently. I'm self taught and had to learn from trying different things. Just because I personally prefer not to glue the spine doesn't mean it doesn't work for what they want. Obviously, there is a "simple binding" where you don't sew your signatures together at all with waxed thread. You simply glue the signatures spine edge and allow the glue to essentially bind the book. I still personally wouldn't glue it to the spine piece though. I'm stumped. But if they were happy with their book, who am I to argue. Lee :)
