I just recovered a 38 year old boxwood cluster of 7 and for 13 years they have been filed planted under low light conditions. This is my first bonsai. This video has given me and my first bonsai the best chance at success I could have ever asked for. Thank You very much!!!

Wow! Amazing! Just like he said if u were to picture urself laying down under that tree and seeing all the branch structure and having the sun to shine through that takes u to another place. That finished piece gave me chills . MASTERPIECE

Great lecture. Lots of stuff to learn here. As far as I know, Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) has neutral pH and does not change the pH of the soil, which is why plants are so welcoming towards it. I use 1 tbsp/gal of Epsom salt on all my plants. When a plant needs acidic water (most do), I also add 1 tbsp/gal of lemon juice.

I've grown a Buxus microphylla "Curly locks" in the southern california foothills (sunset zone 18). It did just fine with 3-5 hours of morning sun, but really didnt like getting hit after 11-12ish

I understand why that left high root was taken off, but that bigish front branch shouldnt have been taken off. The chap said that the purpose of removing the branch was to be able to see through the tree, with the foliage mass reduced this was achieved, that's why it should have been left until the end to see if it was necessary to take it off, it wasnt. The branch also helped the presentation of the large horizontal branch, it's now too stark as the lost branch helped it to blend, transition into the rest of the tree, it now separates itself fom the rest of the tree. This is very unfortunate and saddening, but it's done now. Some trees should be observed with a lot more sensitivity such as this monumental tree 🙏

Bronzing on a boxwood, just like any evergreen is simply caused by the decomposition of chlorophyll in the leaves and the true color coming out. If that is undesirable, a bit of shade in the colder weather will prevent that bleaching/bronzing.

Masterclass! Learned so much. Can anyone explain why Kingsville is the preferred Boxwood to use? All we have around me are mostly Green Velvets and some Korean Boxwoods. Are those good for bonsai?

Too big this tree has great ramification but needs to be reduced in size to give it that powerful look. IMO looks like a bush right now.

I thought it doesn't make any difference if you use organic or chemical fertilizer, as long as the plant gets the nytrients it needs...

1:56:01 Big disparity in foliar mass from left to right, the sparse side has really bad overlap in its branches and looks very unbalanced and though somehow this was nearly the end result. The finish produced at the end of the video is breathtaking. Well done 👏🏼

Looks great, but boxwood stinks. Their cat-spray smell pervades European parks and gardens in late summer - enough reason to avoid the continent at that time. I even avoid them in big box retail garden centres.

I have a couple of nice boxwood bonsai but I understand what you mean. They can stink! Once I brought one indoors to work on it. The tree was indoors overnight and the whole room smelled from it. Blamed my poor cat until I realized it was the boxwood. Now they only stay outside.

You need to understand about bonsai. This boxwood will be kept in a pot. It is not intended to be a landscape shrub. The idea here is to make it look like an ancient oak tree There will be more shaping, refinement, and pruning throughout it's lifetime. This is only the first shaping. Once I did a bonsai demonstration at a garden club meeting. A woman in the front row watched everything I did. I thought she was very interested. At the end she said that before I worked on it she would have been happy to plant the tree in her yard. As for my finished product she said I had ruined it as far as she was concerned. Some people just don't understand bonsai.
