In this tutorial video, Milo shows how you can make your own breakaway bottles using Mold Star™ 15 silicone and SMASH™ Breakaway Resin.
Milo first makes a silicone mold of a bottle using Mold Star™ 15. After the silicone cures, the bottle is demolded and SMASH™ plastic resin is mixed and poured into the mold.
The SMASH™ bottle is allowed to cure, then demolded. As a finishing touch, Milo mists the bottle with denatured alcohol to give it a shiny surface.

SMASH! Plastic® is a liquid plastic designed to shatter/crumble on impact (“breakaway glass”). SMASH! Plastic® is water clear and, once fully cured, shatters like glass. It can be cast solid in thin sections to make window panes or rotationally cast to form hollow bottles, jars or other glass-like objects to be used as breakable props for movie and stage productions.

You can get an accurate estimate of the amount of resin you will need by filling the original bottle with water, then pour that into the mold, then tare the mold+water on a scale. Next fill the mold the rest of the way to the top with water and weigh the amount added. Since water is 1 gram per ML, you can just convert from grams to ML directly to get your volume of resin.

Assuming the resin has the same density as water. Which is highly improbable.

@@dr.lexwinter8604 You actually don't have to worry about the density of the resin because you know the density of the water and you're using the mass of the water to determine the volume of water and then using the volume of water for the volume of resin.

Almost never. You can get away with pulling out some resin and most silicones and reusing the mixing cup sometimes.

Sugar glass has its own set of challenges. Heat will melt sugar glass, ants are attracted to it, and it can rot over time.

In the old days, they were. But sugar glass is tricky to make, and must be used soon after making or else it would absorb humidity and become soft. That's why they were phased out when these types of plastic polymers became available.

Heat will cause the material to deform, but over time, too much heat will cause the piece to lose it's breakaway properties.

Does this material decompose naturally? I'm doing an outdoor event so it will be hard to find/pick up all the pieces. I'm trying to decide if this would be better than sugar glass.

The shelf life of this material is 6 months stored at room temperature (73F / 23C).

You don't have to preheat. It is done to help reduce the pot life of the material so that he is not spending a long period of time rotationally casting. 7-10 minutes spinning a mold around can get very exhausting quickly.

You can use 2-part epoxy or CA glue to repair this material. It is , however, very fragile.

6:48 Couldn't you fill the mold with water then pour it out into a graduated cylinder to get its volume, say 100ml. Repeat by filling the bottle with water and pouring that into a graduated cylinder, say 80ml. You can now do the math, 100ml minus 80ml which gives you exactly the volume of the bottle glass at 20ml. Correct?

SMASH plastic is moisture sensitive as it is a urethane resin. Residual water may cause casting issues. This is a good process, would use sand instead. :)
