How to Make a Caged Wire Wrapped Cabochon

beadaholique.com/collections/... - In this video, you will see from start to finish how to wire wrap a 25mm round gemstone cabochon using Artistic Wire in 24 gauge and 20 gauge. First, you will see how to create the frame for your cabochon by cutting and wrapping the wire. Then you will see how to wire wrap a bail and spiral embellishments for the pendant. Finally, you will see how to add a chain and a clasp to your wire wrapped cabochon pendant. You will also see other sizes and shapes of cabochons that have been wire wrapped using the same technique.

Thanks, very nice work. Yes, start with inexpensive copper. I've had to toss a lot of wire out until I got something I could live with. It does take a lot of practice. And until copper oxidizes it looks pretty cool.

So much of the fun of wire wrapping comes from being creative with it and following your instincts, and it's hard to learn to take chances like that with precious metal wire. A good plated copper wire like this will look gorgeous for years. We made this piece over two years ago now and it's still looking great.

How do you judge the initial length of your 3 main wires or Is 8 inch standard no matter the stone size? What do you do with all the excess wire? Seems a shame to waste so much! This is a terrific, easy-to-follow video, thank you!

Being able to judge the initial length just comes with time and practice. I always opt for a little more rather that a little less. Definitely keep all scraps - you can make them into head pins, eye pins, little bars, dangles, etc. They are not wasted.

Actually when working with gold, I do want exact measurements. I watch the market and buy when it's as low as I can get, but I don't like to watch videos that aren't exact when there are videos that are. It makes me shudder to watch all of that gold being waisted. I hope to see more precise videos from you in the future ♥

It mostly has to do with the circumference. We always recommend starting with more wire than you need, to accommodate for any errors.

You could work off the spool for the 24 gauge so you don't waste the wire.

I thought in the end you must hammer or tire the metal so that it stops being dead soft and keeps its form forever, but I don't see how to do that with a cabochon and this type of wire- wrapping

There are two approaches to hardening this sort of piece depending on what you're looking to make. If you want to make this exact project with the plated wire and howlite stone we used then you'll want to do your hardening with your wire-straightening pliers as you're taking wire off the spool and beginning each wrap. This can work surprisingly well even with dead soft wire. We still have this piece, it's in good shape. If you want to make the most durable piece you can then you'll want to use precious metal wire like sterling silver or 14k gold filled, and a harder stone. What that will do is make the piece durable enough to finish it with the tumble hardening method. With tumble hardening you use a rock tumbler and stainless steel jewelry shot to slowly harden the piece over the course of a few hours. This is a more advanced technique and it will take a bit of testing and care as with any technique that's geared towards more expensive materials, but you can make gorgeous professional pieces with it.

Trying to figure out how to make 2 bails on a wire wrap - so I can attach a chain to each end for a necklace, rather than a pendant. Any help to offer?

Hi cwolf19380, what you would want to do is take the smallest coil, and bend it up to create a loop. Alternatively, depending on how secure you need it to be, don’t be afraid the complete the cage then use an eye pin or separate piece of wire to make those connections.
