Make your own cake mapping guide template in GIMP (easy & free graphics software) with this simple beginner’s tutorial.

This video shows you how to take the dimensions of the cake you intend to use for cake mapping, with any number of tiers, and create a helpful guide that you can then bring into your mapping software.
This guide will be useful when it comes to setting up your input mapping in your projection mapping software of choice, be it in MapMap, MadMapper, Resolume or others. But it will also be useful if you are intending to add text onto your cake.
We will be making our guide using GIMP which is a free, open source graphics editing program. It can be downloaded from GIMP’s website making it possible for you to follow these steps and create your own cake mapping guide step-by-step without parting with any money.

Thank you soo much for all your amazing videos! I was wondering what the equivalent outline function (alpha to selection/stroke selection) would be in photoshop?

Control/command+click on a layer thumbnail in the layers panel to select the pixels on that layer. Then, with one of the selection tools enabled (i.e. marquee selection tool, polygonal lasso tool etc), right click on the artboard and use Stroke.

Good day. I really like cake mapping. Can you suggest if what software I can use if ever I wan to start it for like a small party presentation. It will really help if you can recommend a not to pricey software that I can use for a starter. thank you

Do you have a problem with Map Map crashing after changing the source to the video file (MP4)?

I did on Windows when I was trying to change the guide image (png) to the mp4 (video) content. Did you follow the instruction to use the mp4 guide instead?

Do you mean in MapMap? You can make layers that are rectangles, triangles and circles. You can also add more subdivisions which give you more points to pull around into more exotic shapes. Or did you mean something else?

should a guide like this be used in after effects? your after effects tutorial doesn't utilize a guide like this.

If the surface you’re mapping is simple, like a square, you don’t need a guide. But for more complex shapes, you’ll want a guide - even in after effects if you are using it for projection mapping
