That's a very pretty mallet. I'd be afraid to use it and destroy your artwork but I'll bet it has a nice feel in the hand.

Thanks for this nice video and keep up your good work! But this brings me a question. Why do you choose boiled linseed oil over raw linseed oil?

Great Mallet! Where can I get Rosenut and Walwood?
@TensileStrength
@TensileStrength 6 месяцев назад
I noticed the head is oriented so the end grain impacts the tool. Wouldn't this be the weaker part of the wood, shortening the life of the mallet? Wouldn't it last longer is it was oriented so the face or edge grain was impacting the tool? I'm a beginner so I would appreciate your thoughts on grain direction as it comes to mallets.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 6 месяцев назад
If you rotated the grain 90° then you would have a problem of a head breaking off of the handle. Also with the end grain impacting. It is far more durable than the face grain as the face green tensed to warp and chip off rather than compressed like the end grain.

Very nice James, it came out beautiful as always. Offhand, what do think the angle is on the mallet faces? I really want to make one.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 6 месяцев назад
The angle is about that much. Something between something around 10ish degrees

Hello. I have a question, not exactly about this video though, but about one of the previous videos. Did you get any cracks or insect problems when getting fresly cut/ green lumber? I have just got a newly cut piece of log, but it cracks and I see a lot of insects eating it deep to the inner part it seems. Could you help with some tips? Thank you.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 5 месяцев назад
Send me an email. I'd be glad to help you figure it out. But usually with a log you need to at least split it in half to dry it otherwise it will crack far deeper. You also want to paint the ends so that they dry slower

Does a jointer have a chip breaker ? Found one that looks like somebody has tried to restore and gave up. I need to repair cheeks but other than that it is good shape. Was missing tote but I made a new one. Have made several Krenov style smoothers but first attempt at restoration. BTW like your work.

I frequently use MS Paint because it's simple and quick. There are way better programs with better features, but why use a sledge hammer when all you need is a tack hammer?

My question is how you tell the sex/gender of a wall. I mean the female wall won't give you walnut, and I've never heard of walovary.😂

Yeaaaaah, isn't walnut too soft for a mallet?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 6 месяцев назад
No. Mallet's coming all different hardnesses. Some need to be rock hard and some you want to be soft so they don't dent the work.

First,, Nice work.. Then,, It was a little out of character seeing you in front of a computer (running on electricity)... AND,, Do you purchase your hardwood from a retail dealer??? There used to be ways to get hardwood without a retail dealer but many of those resources are gone...
