3D printers are becoming very popular amongst hobbyists and makers, but they are very expensive to own. Want to make your own 3D printer without having to shell out hundreds of dollars for it? This video will show you how to build your own for less than $100. You can find specific details at the Project Page link below:

This IS SO AWESOME!! I'm becoming an Engineer and it is so cool to see there are a lot of people out there making videos of people messing around with all these weird things and making stuff out it! Keep up the good work!

Nicely done! It's not anything I would attempt to build but this gives real good illustration of the basic workings of a 3D printer. Thanks for sharing!

can we use the software named autodesk remake with this printer to print insted of putting those values ourselves?

Epic as! Recently been thinking along the same lines so I did up an eBay shopping list of all the 3D Printer bits I could find for super cheap - hotends are actually available as low as 10 bucks (e3d clones) and you could use a bowden style design so there's less weight on the cdrom drives. Those 3D Pens are getting so cheap and nasty, I was at least expecting at tiny geared stepper in there!

I know its pretty far in the future, but the easythreed mini printer would work great for this. its tiny, direct drive, and you could use marlin firmware to properly control it

Hi i've been following ur tutorial to make a 3d printer using the cd rom drives but the three stepper motor doesnt rotate with my easydriver only the z axis moves fine . X axis never rotates at all and Y axis only moved once . I checked the connections and even tried to increase power but the problem didn't resolved. The software portion works just like yours . And i am a little lost..

Excellent with one question,on a standard cnc a negative z axis command drives the z down into the workpiece and a positive z axis drives the z up from the workpiece.Have you got the z axis inverted in the GRBL settings or did you wire the Z in reverse. have the exact same setup as yours ,I have been wanting to do the 3d thing and now I will get it done, also what speed control setting did you use on the 3d pen.....WCH

Top notch stuff! I've recently got a bunch of old IDE CD and DVD drives for free so I might try to make this printer for myself! Thanks for the video! :D Just a quick question tho: could one use an old PC instead of an Arduino? I have a really old Athlon XP PC collecting dust somewhere in my garage and it has an old parallel port, which AFAIK was used a lot for DIY projects back in the day due to its many in/out pins and being really easy to interface with programs, so it would be neat to give a new purpose to that old hunk o' junk!

For the transistor i have been trying to find the right resistance. You have used a 22K ohm resistor, whereas i am frustrated using a 390 K Ohm resistor and the motor still runs (as per your website while trying to identify the right resistance you have to keep increasing the resisance). :/ What am I doing wrong? I am using a PNP transistor BC557.
