Looking for a few secret tips on how to get your compost pile hot, steaming and cooking strong?
When it comes to home composting, one of the things gardeners struggle with the most is getting their pile to heat up and stay hot. Although all compost piles will eventually break down over time, getting a pile hot speeds up the process dramatically.
Not only will a hot pile create finished compost more quickly, it also creates a much healthier compost. When a compost pile reaches higher temperatures during decomposition, good things happen.

I hope this finds you in good health and spirits. I am reaching out to you with an important request for support. At South Hill Compost, they are passionate about sustainable gardening practices and promoting environmental stewardship. One of their key initiatives is to enhance their composting process by purchasing a Worm Casting Sifter. A Worm Casting Sifter is an essential tool that allows them to efficiently separate worm castings from compost materials, resulting in a higher quality and more nutrient-rich compost. With this equipment, they can significantly improve their composting operations and produce a greater quantity of organic fertilizer for our community garden and local farmers. However, acquiring a Worm Casting Sifter requires financial resources beyond their current budget. This is why I am reaching out to individuals like you who share our commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation. Your generous donation can help them purchase the Worm Casting Sifter and take their composting efforts to the next level. By supporting this initiative, you will not only contribute to the success of their organization but also make a tangible difference in promoting sustainable agriculture and reducing waste in our community. Thank you for considering supporting my cause. Together, we can make a positive impact on the environment and create a greener, healthier future for generations to come. gofund.me/a1b2a03c

How long does a finished compost pile stay active if not used?

Compost left in a pile, even underneath a tarp, will retain most of its beneficial microbes and nutrients anywhere from four to 12 months. The better you protect it from sun, rain, and pests, the longer it will last.

I understand that the microbes will go into dormancy until another food source is available. I store mine in a dark spot out of the sun for a very long time. It would be interesting to look at it under a microscope.
