Clearly since making this video, I have been notified that I left a few things out. 1. The drill that I was using is a 14v drill from Ryobi. It was picked up from a garage sale for almost nothing, but didn't come with a battery charger. It wasn't worth going out and buying one. 2. The power supply is an old laptop charger. It is 15v and 8 amps. 3. YES I should have used heat shrink instead of electrical tape. I didn't have any lying around and don't want to go get some. I have since added heat shrink. If you have any other questions, please feel free to leave then down below

Always make a knot in the cord on the other side of the hole (inside the casing) to keep your connections from breaking when the cord is tugged, and if you still have the dead battery don't even open the drill at all. Instead, carefully open the battery casing, remove the guts and wire to the casing so that you can have a cord that simply plugs into the drill. Not only is it a cleaner option but you retain the ability to use batteries in the future.

Hi, lovely video and some great work. RU-vid find of the week for me. I bought a cordless drill 15.6v with no charger and the battery pack had 11, 1.2v 1500mah batteries Ni-Cd. 3 of the 11 batteries had zero voltage, the rest ranged from 0.2 to 1.1v. I want to convert the cordless drill to corded. Please I have an old laptop adaptor with output rated as 20v and 3.25A, would this be enough to run the drill, or what would be the ideal range of adaptor to use? Kindest regards.
@DadandSonDIY
@DadandSonDIY 3 года назад
In our experience, drills typically need a lot of currents (6-8 amps). It would also probably be beneficial to try finding an adapter with a voltage closer to the 15.6v spec of your drill, as having too high of a voltage can cause it to burn out.

@@michaelmercury1256 yard sales, that place that resales donated items Goodwill almost couldn't remember the name and of course online sometimes you can pick up a whole bunch of different adapters AC/DC. If you go to online route and you're trying to to do this for several items or to have backup supplies I would buy a assorted group of them in a one-time purchase where you probably get them for a dollar to a piece plus shipping. But you can go ahead and do a quick soldering up of what you have if you're only going to be running the drill briefly and seldom use you probably be just fine but if you plan on using it for several minutes at a time for an afternoon you'd want to make sure that you have something that's going to give you the juice you need(a) and within the usuable (v) spec.

I know this is an old post. But, we have a Kyobi and a Kawasaki that showed 18v and 19v on the power drills respectively. I hooked them up to a 12v, 6a car charger to see if they would still work. They had no problem going full tilt. So, a 12v power supply will be sufficient. However, the video says AC adapter, which means that it's going through a power conversion from AC to DC. This is because cordless drills are designed to work off of batteries that are well under 120 volts. As for amps, that gets drawn to the electrical device as opposed to volts that get pushed. As such, you can go as high as you want on the amperes. But, I wouldn't go any lower than 4 amps or your drill will struggle on tough jobs.

It has to be a DC adapter that has either the same specifications as the drill or tools or a little higher... If your drill says it needs 14Volts at 6Amps to run nicely, look for a DC adapter that may have 14,18, or 20 volts at 6amps... just avoid using anything way higher on amps because it will overheat your drill.. so look for something about the same Amps..

To not blow anything and to have decent torque, Ill try using a 12v (goes up to 14.5v adjustable) power supply 30a thats used in cctv, led lighting, and other general purpose stuff, and put a 20amp fuse to keep things from blowing up. The charger just trickles electricity into the battery, it can't supply enough to power it, check the amp rating of the power supply. when freewheeling the drill pulls about 3 amps and when working it can pull up to 10.

On a different note for those of you who don't mind conversions, is a process that could be used on devices that would typically require two or more AA, AAA,C,D, etc batteries. For instance, I have a multi LED round riser that I think was originally for Illuminating a little toy from the bottom side up and I wanted to use it on the bottom of one of my fiber optic Christmas trees for which the original motor and color wheel with halogen bulb has gone missing. But battery's probably won't last but a few hours in it and you can get expensive to swap them out and very time-consuming to constantly be charging them up even if I did have a good Supply. All you have to do is take the number of cells and if they're 1.5 volts and in this instance I'm looking at 6 volts DC(4×1.5) and knowing it's just for some low wattage LEDs I'll just take one of my AC/DC adapters( and I keep all my old ones even for items that quit working) and I'll find something between 5-7 1/2 volts DC at probably 500 milliamps plus or minus to power it and it'll be soldered in at the two main leads off the battery box or I'll just remove the leads from the box and go off of that and then you just plug it in when you don't want it unplug it and you don't have to worry about it

Your commentary instead of being a suggestion of improving the work shown here, rater it seems a caustic negative opinion. This guy tries to show an idea that in my point of view is very good. In my opinion, I would remove the battery pack from the case , and I would use the battery case. I would sold the adapter's wire to the connector terminals of the battery case. then, I would install the power directly like the drill has the battery. I wouldn't open the drill. I think he shows a good idea and my battery charger and batteries are broken.

Actually manufacturers don't let we know what power they need to get working, so we need to open the tool and read the motor specs or find their default power consumption on internet. My example was only to make sense. So when a motor works it consumes more power if the power adapter can supply it. The voltage of the adapter should match the battery requirement, but it can provide more power, the motor will take no more power that it needs, if it is used correctly. If the motor is under pressure it can consume more power and to burn out. The upper limit of the adapter's power is for security reason, because users sometimes don't use the tools correctly.

Can I run an 18v drill off an 12v powersupply? If so, what will be the effect of the reduced voltage? Thank you
@millanferende6723

It will be much weaker basically. Maybe, very maybe, it will draw more current and burn up? But I think likely it's just gonna be weaker.

I have converted several 18V tools to run off 12V without any loss of torque. The unloaded speed is a little slower, but not enough to notice. The reason it works is that I'm using a regulated 12V high current (30A) supply. Battery voltage sags under heavy load anyway, so 12V is plenty. I measured tool current and voltage under load before and after battery elimination.

warping wire and taping is ok for testing , but final solution should be soldered or crimped , and a knot should have been tied on lead before it came out of drill for strain relief

Question...does it matter which is positive and which is negative??
@masterzz57

It does most of the time, but for the drill, it probably doesn’t since it will just make the motor run in reverse. Observe polarity.

No, there is a laptop charger that we used as an adapter. DO NOT plug the drill directly into an outlet as the drill isn't meant to run on 120v AC.

This also works if you want to try out whether your cordless drill works IF you have dead batteries. Connect just as the kid did here (Caucasian to Native-American & African-American to African-American). Put some electrical tape on the connections, fit the trigger in back into the plastic harnesses so you can try it out to see if the motor works.

I used a 12v 12ah battery out of my childs ride on car (actually just a 12v golf buggy/mobility scooter battery) to power a bosch drill in a fix. Just used crocodile clips on each end. A bit sketchy, but it worked great. That's another option, carry a bigger battery with you and wire that into your drill. If you can wire it into an existing battery, even better!

My partner has a lot of tools, so when he needed a circular saw, I ordered this one for him as a Christmas gift. ru-vid.comUgkxYDKeIjKLOfcwTgdin7TtCutsz4MbIc43 He is incredibly happy with the purchase. He stated that he likes that it is powerful, but still easy to use and cuts very well. He mentioned that it is important to know the right tools for the job at hand, and this compact saw has been exactly what he needed for a variety of projects at his rental properties and renovations. He also appreciates the battery packs, as stated, he owns a lot of DEWALT tools, so he is able to always keep batteries charged as needed.
