Ingredients, tools & method:
60ml (2oz) Rittenhouse Rye
5-10ml (1/6-1/3oz) sugar syrup
2 dashes Angostura bitters
2 dashes Dr Adam Elmegirab’s Aphrodite bitters
A lemon twist
A big block of ice
A rocks glass
A mixing glass
A barspoon
A julep strainer
Prep your twist.
Add bitters & rye to the glass, fill with as much ice as possible and stir until desired dilution. Strain over good quality ice, squeeze the lemon twist to expel the citrus oil over the drink then add the twist to the glass.
Enjoy!

I am so thankful for the resurgence of quality cocktails. I remember trying to get an old fashioned in the 90’s and just getting a blank stare. If it wasn’t a draft beer or Appletini they had no idea. Cheers

Amen. Back in the '90s, I ordered a Beefeater Martini before dinner in Applebee's, I think, and when it arrived, it arrived with a Marachino cherry. That'll make a teetotaler of you, fast!

I'm a savage i just build in the old fashioned glass with 2/3 full of ice, either 2 shots of buffalo trace or rittenhouse, 2-3 dashes of bitters, 1/2 tsp sugar and a twist of orange and stir for 25ish seconds. Solid recipe.

My recipe is far different. Here in Chicago, we make them differently. I learned about them from my father, a corporate VP with an expense account in the 1960s and 70s. I have been an Old Fashioned devotee since I could legally drink. Oddly enough, my ex-wife was the bar manager of two large establishments in Boston, and made them exactly the same way. A slice of orange, two dashes of Angostura bitters, half a teaspoon of sugar, and a cherry into the bottom of the glass. Muddle all ingredients to release the orange and cherry juices. Pack glass with ice, pour Canadian Club Whiskey to about an inch from the lip of the glass, add another whole cherry, and top with club soda, seltzer water, or water. Stir. I prefer seltzer to avoid the salt of club soda and the dry mouth club soda occasionally causes. Stir frequently as you drink. If you are having dinner and plan on tasting it, it’s probably best to limit your intake to two of them. Unless you’re a veteran with this drink, then three may be OK.

I made many of these. You really can't go wrong. My main one was sugar cube, 3-4 dashes angostura, bar spoon club soda. Muddle and stir. Club soda helps dissolve the sugar. Add George Dickel rye and ice. Stir until cold. Express with orange peel. Use peel for garnish. I always had to make 2 or 3. Very tasty.

Love an old fashioned and stumbled on a nice variant. Hadn't had one in a while and was out of Bourbon, so I used Laphroaig Lore instead. Needed a bit more sugar syrup in to balance out the intense smokiness you get with Laphroaig but it was amazing. My bourbon of choice for an old fashioned is Woodford Reserve.

Can we first establish what should be painfully obvious, even to a Canadian like me: Ms. Devine has a SCOTTISH accent... and as such could melt hearts simply by reciting a phone directory. Her reference to undissolved sugar crystals as being "rogue" demonstrates a level of charm perhaps more addictive than the libations she prepares. Yes she's beautiful, and yes she achieves the impossible (making drinking seem even more desirable), but perhaps Ms. Devine's greatest feat is instructing the Old Fashioned while conspicuously omitting the phrase "maraschino cherry". The dawn just got a little brighter...

There are so many sugars out there to experience. The more I play around with them the more I like raw sugars or variants of browns as opposed to the highly refined. Flavors are more distinct and warmer than plain or the smaller grained baking or caster sugar I think it is called. Wonderful video and thanks, subscribed. I had an epiphany on the old fashioned and cocktail evolution. I like the cube or a bar spoon of sugar usually demarara or turbinado. I find that the cocktail evolves as you drink it, becoming progressively sweeter. i also like the grit as it progresses. my spec is 2 oz bourbon 2 dashes ango 4 dashes orange, sugar as above and orange peel garnish. make sure to wipe the rim good. Cheers

A bit of a story about this top selling cocktail in the world; I was at a well stocked bar/pub in Winnipeg a couple of years ago, and after a while grew tired of sopping pints of stout. I decided to order an Old Fashioned. The bar tender nodded and toddled off down the bar. Between chatting with my colleague, and watching the hockey game, I hadn't noticed that _twenty minutea_ had passed. In fact, I had another pint in front of me, as I had forgotten about the Old Fashioned. When it finally arrived, they asked me for _eightteen dollars_ to which I replied, "you know I only ordered _one_ right?" To be fair I found all of the booze in Winnipeg to be on the pricey side. It turns out they had to *GOOGLE* how to make the drink. I'd imagine they probably made some mistakes and possibly had to make a couple of attempts at it. It was dangerous of them not to charge me up front for it, as since it took so long to arrive, I forgot about it, and could have left before they arrived with the finished product.

What I love from this channel is learning how I can make my drinks more palatable for my friends who don’t love the taste of alcohol 😅. Dilute and chill before? Who knew! @ShaneTheGeek

Same here I bought Toki thinking it might sip well... NOPE! It was most certainly designed to be a cocktail/mixing whiskey. I have made several old fashioned with it. Elijah Craig is currently a go to Bourbon for me and makes a great Old Fashioned. I will sip on the Elijah Craig and mix with Toki until I used it up. Probably wont be going the Rye direction since I tend to not favor spice notes in my Scotch's and Whiskeys. Most interesting thing so far is learning that most Japanese Whisky is not actually Japanese its all imported spirits from Scotland which are then typically aged in Japanese oak casks. I have found that I really enjoyed the totally Japanese Ohishi Whisky that has a 100% Rice mashbill specifically the Sherry Cask. I know Japan has no standard set on what Japanese Whisky should be but I think a predominately rice mashbill or consisting of at least 51 percent rice derived spirit would be a start similar to that of Bourbon.

Haven't tried this with a Rye old fashioned but for my smooth bourbon old fashioned I like to use blur agave nectar. sweetens as well as a heavy sugar simple syrup(2:1) but adds a nice earthy undertone. Just make sure it is a decent brand like the Natures Promise. I had a bottle from Domino (the sugar people) and it might as well have been simple syrup. also makes for a great simple coordinated drink with a decent tequila. make it like an old fashioned with tequila , agave nectar , and a lime twist. if you are feeling adventurous try a splash of orange bitters.

Your Canadian friend is 100% correct....though if you really respect her you’d use Wiser’s Reserve Canadian rye. IMHO, Canadian ryes aren’t as ‘spicy’ and generally are the Goldilocks between bourbon and American ryes. Also, add a lemon to a rye and ginger; delicious. Put a cherry in a bourbon Manhattan; oh yeah.

I ran out of whisky & ended up making Old Fashioned cocktails with Hendricks the other week, using this method. It was actually not bad at all. It also looked quite a bit like diluted whisky after all the bitters went in. I variously garnished with lemon or orange peel or orange peel & cherry etc and I couldn't really tell you what worked better. Some kind of Old Tom would have prob. been best as far as gins go

Yay, love gin OF! Old Toms make great Old Fashioneds, as does Genever or barrel aged gins 😋

Curious about what spirit in engraved on your pendant - appears to be a silver tag from a crystal decanter.

I will try yoir old fashion recipe, but could you do me a favor, besides the angostura bitter I could understand what is the other bitter you use in your recipe. Thanks so much and congrats for your channel, I really like it! Cheers

Hey Jose! They’re Dr. Adam Elmigrab’s Aphrodite Bitters. They’re from Scotland but available in speciality shops in Australia and the US, I’m not sure about elsewhere. I like them cause the chilli/chocolate/ginger spice works really well with the rye, if you can’t find those exact ones just look for something with a flavour profile that will support your base spirit 😊
