Good video, John. I have been thinking about making one of these for years but just have not found enough of a need for drum sander. I have about a 4" diameter steel drum I salvaged from a treadmill that I have been keeping to use as a drum if I ever get around to making one. I guess if I built it I would find uses for it.
@JohnClothier
@JohnClothier 4 года назад
Thanks Mike. That steel drum sounds perfect for one of these. I'm using mine as part of a guitar build but I also think it will be useful for sanding flat rings of segmented wood ready for glue ups. I'm sure it will largely sit unused which is partly why I wanted to make something rather than go out any buy.

Hey John, you have given me a to quote Dr. Seuss "An idea! An awful idea! I got a wonderful, awful idea!" Ok before you think I mean I'm gonna do something completely half thought plan than can get me and my family in trouble with the law, my idea is thought out but I'm not a engineer by any stretch but simple mechanics I can figure out with my dad. Anyway I've been wanting to get a Lathe Chuck for holding my pieces (My Lathe came with PSI centers and while I trust em to hold my stuff I think I can better center with a four prong chuck, especially for Pottermore Wands and prop sword handles) but they are either just out of price range or not the right DPI for my lathe threads. But I also got a bowl plate with my lathe which has predrilled holes all around it so I thought "With a few 90 degree brackets, a few bolts and a little elbow grease I could rig up one of my own." The bolts would be the size that best fit and tightened up to a point I'd never get them off on my own and I have no plans to turn boxes or bowls in the near future so I could give it a new function. I'll work it out with my dad and uncle they know more on these than me, great mentors the both of them. What do you think? I have seen some DIY Chucks and those I'd never trust my skills alone for but a solid chunk of steel is a good base especially since it is designed for my Lathe. Have a good one and good luck to all your future projects.
@JohnClothier
@JohnClothier 4 года назад
Thanks for watching! You probably could fashion a chuck like that but im not sure how safe it would be.
@Plokman040
@Plokman040 4 года назад
@@JohnClothier Indeed, my dad even said it would cost us more in the long run. But as I said it was a idea and I ran it by the experts so I will just keep my eye open for a good priced chuck, maybe go to the hardware store with the plate so I can be sure it is the right thread count. My dad did have another idea for using the plate as a Rotary sander just apply some Velcro and get the right disk grits, it is much safer too.

Sorry for the wandering thoughts: Looks like a very good tool for flattening a segmented glue up for a bowl. I have seen people scribble the surface to be sanded with a pencil, and then look at the sanded surface after the first pass. If there are no visible pencil lines, the surface is flat, if some are visible then make another pass. Would a single piano hinge work instead of 4 small hinges? The mechanism to raise and lower the surface looks awkward, but I don't have an alternative.
@JohnClothier
@JohnClothier 4 года назад
Thanks for watching Doug. Yes I am planning to do some segmented turning and the same thought crossed my mind to use this. Not sure if it was clear int he video, I used the pencil scribble trick on the drum when truing it up. Yes a piano hinge would be much better but I didnt have one, I did have the small hinges and while they took a little more lining up I doubt there is much difference. I would ideally go with piano hinge though. The only awkward thing I have found about the lowering mechanism is being able to set it to a particular depth. Its a bit trial and error. I did find away around this though by taking a preset block size and putting that under the drum before raising the bed to meet it.

Hi John Brilliant idea never thought about making one for the lathe. Would this take the place of buying a thicknesser. Also instead of glueing a nut on the end, could you turn the end of the drum to fit into a chuck. Just a thought, thanks again Terry.
@JohnClothier
@JohnClothier 3 года назад
Thanks Terry. Yes I use it instead of a thicknesser. It’s not going to take a lot of material away in one go but it’s good to get to final dimension. You could mount it in a Chuck but it’s keeping it straight and true that’s the issue. You know what it’s like when to take something out of a Chuck and put it back, it’s never true again.

Looks like a great idea, but I think I will use a 3" or 4" PVC pipe schedule 40 for the drum. I would have thought that you would run the lathe the normal direction and insert the wood at the top (backside of the lathe) and let gravity do the work as the sander brings the wood to the thickness you want?
@JohnClothier
@JohnClothier 4 года назад
Thanks. A couple of things to consider with using pipe. can you mount it absolutely central? I thought I would strugglen with this so went for turning something. Second is isnit solid enough? That I dont know. I think I would try pipe if I did again. Its just about it being more awkward going round the back. I felt i had more control. Gravity could well be your friend here though thatis for sure

Hello John ! Loved the video ! I am commenting without checking all existing. Please forgive me if I repeat. I am currently segmenting, happily despite using crap saws & homemade gear, so this project is right up my street. I had a few thoughts... * Why not double up the mdf to increase its inflexibility (maybe even with plywood * Is there room to add a short safety fence along the hinge ? Or have you found that material catches are so unlikely that it would not be worth the effort ? * I thought a pushstick would be helpful to keep a good steady pace through. * The single post table adjustment... has it been stout enough to remain parallel so far ? * I plan to use my live center instead of the bearings that you used. Would you recommend I reconsider ? * Is there anything that you would do differently if you were to do it again ? Again, great idea, great video, and good on you for putting it out there and sharing. Cheers !
@JohnClothier
@JohnClothier 4 года назад
Thanks Quinn!! Sure you could certainly double up the MDF, not a bad idea. I have also thought about a think layer of steel on the top. Yes you could add a fence along the hinge. Wouldn't work for me as I want to run long things through it and it would get in the way but great for segmented turning. As long as the drum spins the correct way then no I havent had any catches Pushstick, could idea especially with small items. Single post for the adjustment, no I added another 2 to give me 3. This is much better. Yes live centre is fine. I would have done the same had I not had the bearings If I did it again I would add a clamp to hold it to the lathe and add dust extraction. I would also cut the plywood into circles and true that up rather than squares Glad you enjoyed the video!

@@JohnClothier Good Morning from the West Coast Colonies (Seattle) ! Good to hear from you ! I just got my roll of adhesive backed sandpaper to be helically placed on the drum (rough 80, I will then use finer on the 12 inch, lathe spun MDF sanding disk). Your input is gold, and I sincerely appreciate your time and consideration. Design-wise * Is the steel for the table to improve table rigidity, or to improve usability by making a more slippery or truer surface with which to slide the material under the drum ? (Probably a bit of both) * I imagine eighth inch would suffice, though quarter would not necessarily be overkill, and would then allow you to forgo the mdf altogether... hmm, I might just go steel The lower brace sheet would not need to be planar. It could be as simple as a pair of quarter inch thick, two inch wide braces running perpendicular to the bed, with cleats to fix the lever moment length to the hinges. (Sorry about all the SAE references, we Americans are still just inching towards the Metric system. See what I did there ?) Then super duty tube and shaft hinge a steel table of eighth inch sheet, or quarter... (Which would you think ? I will cost compare.) I believe I just might make my first Video for this project, and give you credit of course ! I will make it out to the steel stockyard and price this out. I will set a price challenge at $60 ($35 already spent on sandpaper, but there were 3 of them...) A year ago, I built a braced, quarter inch steel stage to mount a 2 horse motor to my 3/4 horse Harbor Frieght lathe, with machine bits used in order to retain the mechanical speed control. This project should be easier by comparison. I got' this, as it were. Cheers !

Moving forward with the project still. 3/16 plate mild steel 18 wide by 20 deep. Made a circle jig. The ends are plywood, the center is MDF. The cylinder is four and a quarter in diameter. I will pare it down to 4. I am using 5/8 steel rod for the pinion shaft, and machine collars for the hinges. I have yet to weld. I still am planning

Just curious as to why you didn't just glue up some long pieces of some cheap hardwood and then turn it round for the long cylinder since you have a lathe to begin with, just seems like a logical step? I guess maybe you were worried about some expansion but would it have really moved that much as to make the cylinder not effective? Nice vid.

Thanks! You are right that I thought there would be less movement and it would all be more stable with plywood. Plus i had a load lying about.

@JohnClothier
@JohnClothier 4 года назад
Thanks. Threaded rod is a great idea and if I was to build another one I think I would do that. The reason for not cutting the corners off, just easier to glue up squares. If I'd used the rod though that wouldn't have been an issue
