**UPDATE**
For the Girth Hitch Loop, we now recommend RIO Fly Line Backing Dacron 20 lb instead of the 50 lb. braid. It is silky smooth and simply performs better!
Very detailed step-by-step guide to building a Euro style nymphing rig for Keiryu rods (apllicable to Tenkara and other fast action telescopic rods as well). Video includes tips and suggstions on other nymphing rigs and tactics including floating lines and use of indicators.

A bit of indicator yarn tied with a clove hitch near the pole tip will help find or watch the tip. It will look sort of like a bow tie.

Thanks for the tip. I think that would be very effective.

this helped a lot!! I was looking for good line to make a hitch so i can make my own pvc floating lines to use with my Keiryu and tenkara rods. it's hard to find Orange PVC lines for Keiryu and tenkara so i've ben making my own out of Rio 30lb dacron, 0.026’’ Pvc Running line, 12lb Maxima Chameleon and a tippit ring. After seeing this I got some 50lb x4 J-braid and it works A lot better then the Rio dacron.

Update: we been making a lot of these lines and experimenting here and there, based on suggestions we get from guides and others. Based on that, we just changed our recommendation to 20 lb dacron backing for making the loop vs the 50 lb. braid. Both are good, but we have to admit, we liked the dacron (in 20 lb) a little better.

Hi DAVID.. I noticed this presentation was two years ago in here. I am passing you by… I am 89 and I have fished quite a bit in my lifetime… I have Retired my fly rod.. But I am still a professional photographer of over 50 years.. Your presentation was excellent.. You are very articulate.. But but but.. You photography presentation left much to be desired.. Remember, this is just me speaking.. My vision is 2020 God willing… But you have zero contrast between your tie ups braid, and that ominous background black.. Black would be ideal if you would’ve entertained using multiple colors like yellow, white, orange, fuchsia pink, and set the focal length at a specific distance when you’re tying your knots for those individuals who have lower visual acuity.. I apologize for being negative.. I’m just used to seeing perfection in a visual presentation.. Thank you

Bobb, thank you for the input!! You are correct and I will try to improve that aspect of the video. Always learning, always improving. Kinda like fishing :) Cheers!

I thought I read Keiryu can be used with real bait and floats.

That is correct and it definitely can. Traditional Japanese Keiryu did that, although now about 40% half use flies. We are evolving Keiryu in the U.S. beyond its traditional application in Japan. Our philosophy is to adapt Keiryu to American angling and fixed line fly fishing. In the end, Keiryu excels in many applications - fly, bait, river, lake, surf fishing, etc.

David @KeiryuRodCo doesn't know this, but he's my Yoda. After utilizing mostly Owner trout rigs or fabricating my own copies I've recently incorporated more Euro nymphing, as it lengthens my season as well as mixing it up. There is one thing in this video I DO NOT recommend. Perhaps it's the perspective of the camera, but I try not to allow my line to be at a shallow angle compared to the tip section of my rod (during drifts and casting, of course.) My reasoning is that if I allow my tip to drop and the line to lay at a shallow angle I've experienced my girth hitch loop "issues". Issues where wind loops can form after lifting and casting which create loops and knots, or where the girth hitch loosens and slides down my rod a bit, or the dreaded "where the f did my line go!?!" Disclaimer: these issues seem to happen more on my rotating lillian rods, but the wind loopsz/knots/tangles may occur on the traditional non-rotating lillians.

Thanks for the feedback! (both the Yoda part :) and the input on the loop issues). If I follow your logic correctly, I could see the line to rod angle being an issue, although I don't think I do that too much (will try to observe next time I'm out). One thing I do now to minizmize the dreaded loop slide is to really moisten the girth hitch knot. I feel that definintly helps. Tight Lines!!

@KeiryuRodCo mmoist. Yes. I agree. I do dip the loop in the stream and visually check. Again, rotating Lillian? Needs more of my attention. My TN Provo? Never lets go. I really can't contain my enthusiasm for everyone and everything at Keiryu Rod Co.

@@MRptwrench Thanks!! Yes, I definitily think the rotating lillian is a factor. I'm personally not entirely sold on those myself. There is a real split among the professional guides we work with as well. Glad you like TN Provo. That rod is awesome (in my very subjective opinion)! !!
