Making your own fabric book cover is a super quick easy project. This book cover is for a textbook but you can use it on any hardcover book, journal, or binder. It's a great back to school project, but you can also use it to add color and pattern to books on a shelf or coffee table.

I Love this tutorial, just one suggestion to anybody wanting to make this. The lady in the video said she used a heavier home decor fabric, but if you are planning on making this out of quilting cotton or a lighter weight fabric, I would suggest adding a lining. The lining prevents any show through from the text on the book or otherwise!
@nanaimogirl2000
@nanaimogirl2000 5 лет назад
"Heavier home decor" doesn't compute with me, are there other names for it? I saw a cotton twill that might have worked at a local shop but at 24.99 - 20% seems like a lot for 1 meter of fabric. I am wanting to use a plain white, or say a muslin sort of looking fabric. What would you suggest?
@cquirkyfish
@cquirkyfish Год назад
@@nanaimogirl2000 you could probably use another plain cotton. Or you could also use another cotton print, so it's pretty inside and out. I'm going to try and make one that is reversible.

An alternative to measuring the book before hand is to lay it flat and measure 4 inches from either side and one inch from the top. Saves time and unnecessary measurements. I used thin pj fleece which was a little tricky to work with.

Tip that I learned the hard way: I felt weird about leaving raw edges, so I turned and sewed down the long edges. Don't do this! When you're finished the little bit of bulk from the turned edge is noticeable and irritating, and all the raw edges would be tucked away anyway so they aren't be an issue. Apart from that my cover turned out great!
@careyroberts1329
@careyroberts1329 Год назад
Thanks for the tip! I was actually thinking of sewing down the raw long edges but now I won't. I think I'll use my pinking shears instead since I'm using a woven fabric.

@@careyroberts1329 That's a great idea. I had fraying edges, so I used the zigzag stitch on my sewing machine which didn't add any bulk!

@@careyroberts1329 Thanks. That's a great idea. I'll do that too, to reduce the bulk. I'm going to use some quilting cotton and light batting/stabilizer.

Just came across your tutorial. So easy to follow. I just made a cover for a Bible my oldest daughter’s grandmother bought for her when she was 6. My daughter is now 40. It’s a Precious Moments Bible and for the most part has held up pretty well over the years. I made the cover from fabric that belonged to my daughter’s great great grandmother. So to us it makes it very sentimental. Thank you for your tutorial.

I've not ruined mine yet, but I definitely should've watched this video before beginning to make mine, lol. I didn't even think about just making pockets to fit the covers into, I was going to glue the edges to the inside of the book (this is for a hardback journal I'll be using for scrapbooking). I like your method way more, so that if I do get tired of the print I'm using, I can change it without damaging the book. I have a second pack of the fabric in case I indeed have reached a point of no return, but I'll see if I can pivot into this version with the current fabric first. Thank you for this! Edit: Took me about two days (with breaks) to finish mine as I don't have a sewing machine, but it's done! I didn't need the second pack of fabric, so I can return it to the store. I used a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) pattern I found at Walmart that was sold in a 1 yard pack. Without even fully unfolding it, it had room to spare with the size of my journal. I did almost ruin everything, though, with a weird insistence that the pockets cover as much of the inside panels as possible 😅. I wanted it to be like how you read a book synopsis on the inside panel...though there's nothing to read this time, I just thought it would look nicer. It instead just adds more fabric so that the book doesn't sit fully closed. And because of this change, I almost wasn't able to slide the book in. Only by pulling the book covers back almost completely was I able to slip the second half in. This can definitely ruin the spine, so I'd suggest others to follow the pocket depth recommendation from the video 😂 Anywho, it's now done and won't need to be taken out, but I can if I truly want to as opposed to my initial idea of gluing the fabric, lol. Really great tutorial, thank you!

I tried this for a spiral bound notebook and it just doesn’t work :( because when I lay it down open and fold the inner flap ends over it is one dimension, but when I close the book it needs about another inch in length to be able to close. Was bummed because this was the best most simplest method I found after so many! Maybe elastic or a stretchy fabric on the spine/spirals would work. Frustrated!

When I was a kid, we used brown paper grocery bags for text books. The paper was heavier in the 70s and 80s. I use fabric covers for my paperbacks. I move the cover to the current book. It keeps the edges from getting ragged, and busy bodies from commenting negatively about what I'm reading while I'm waiting at the doctor's office.
