In this video I’m going to show you how I made these accessories for the lathe. I made a faceplate and a adjustable chuck to turn bowls.
Note: The self centering "Longworth chuck" was named after its inventor. Since this chuck is not self centering, adjustable chuck would be a more appropiated term...

Very interesting video. In your description you have correctly identified (in the links attached), some examples of the chuck that was invented by the late Australian wood turner Mr Longworth. As noted, it is a self-centering chuck, and if a chuck does not have the contra-rotating plates, associated spiral slots (with inserted sliding grips), then it isn't self centering, and consequently is not a Longworth chuck.

I didn't know about that, it's my first time experimenting with the lathe... I'll change the description and update the article on my website with this information, thank you so much!

Is it necessary to use a pulley between the engine and the plate? Could you use the engine directly? Thanks, good tutorial

you could use it directly, but this way you can vary the revolutions... thanks!

I was actually surprise by how well this metal/wood bond works. If you use a hard plywood such as birch, the bond is strong and sturdy, too. Still, a long nut would work just as well. Using wing nuts is a good idea, it´s just that I didn't have any spares in my workshop!
@AlfFisher
@AlfFisher 7 лет назад
The initial connection is strong. But gradually, with each time the connection is a little loose (especially considering the heavy workload on the faceplate). Positioning "threaded" is not very good. Much better to use a "smooth landing". - wing nut, you can do it yourself - combining conventional nut and body of plywood.

I made this adjustable faceplate after watching your video "I thought it was a good idea" because I don't have a chuck for my Lathe, the thing is when I put a bowl into it to turn the base off it Jumps out of the faceplate when i start to take wood off the bowl, "I make sure that it is tight in the faceplate" but still it jumps out every time
@Paoson_Woodworking
@Paoson_Woodworking 6 лет назад
hello Gordon, it works for me! Do you have conical silent blocks? You can also use double-sided tape to reinforce the grip. Send me some pics please.
@gordonthorpe17
@gordonthorpe17 6 лет назад
Yes I do have the conical silent blocks, they do compress & belly out when tightened up,, it took me 2 weeks to find them, I did think of only putting 6 on it but eventually decided on putting 8 on it as you did, it looks exactly the same as yours
@gordonthorpe17
@gordonthorpe17 6 лет назад
I'm thinking of making a dougnut clamp instead, that way it can't jump off

I could use my tailstock to hold it on but that is defeating the object

there are rubber patches and other accessories so as not to damage the object while using the tailstock!

Great videos and I love your ingenuity, but you keep referring to your adjustable faceplate as a 'Longworth chuck', it isnt! See online for Longworth chucks, they are self centering, otherwise nice job.
