That hearthboard isn't drilled out with a drill. It's done with the spindle. He should have showed how to carve the notch. It's easy even with a sharp rock. Takes about a minute. It's all easily made without tools. Lots of different kinds of spindles and hearthboards will work. Just have to get the friction right. Takes LOTS of practice.

Mullein stalks make the best spindles. Cattail or yucca stalks will work. Willow or cottonwood for the hearthboards. Good luck.

You can easily do it with stone tools. You literally drill the hole with the spindle. All you do is carve a little depression to carve a place for the spindle to sit in and then use the spindle to drill into it. And the board is also easy to shape with stone tools, it just takes more time. I know this comment was five years ago but I dont care

RunescapeSupersaiyan It's not impossible to make a fire without any tools, but I don't see the point in making a "How To" video, then proceed to use niche tools that nobody has laying around.

It's your perspective to claim over every single human being by their fysical and psychic that they cannot make fire without tools. Maple, poplar are good to use. I had to do it in the boy scouts to earn the fire badge. Took about an hour or so.

Well ive been using that stuff for at least 2 weeks in the wild now and i know how to, u gotta find some kindareally solid wood, make sure the buttom and the top get flat as u take of the bark with a knife or sharp stone , when ur done u gotta take the knife or sharp stone and kinda drill just like that stick when u gotta start fire, rubb between ur hands untill u get half a centimeter hole down to the wood but not thru. when u get that take some dry dry sand not much just a pinc and drop it down the hole once u laid ur leg on the corner of the platform u take ur stick and start rubbing, about 5-10 mins, and once u get a little smoke speed up a little and when u finnaly get a little more u stop rubbing and drop the ember/coal that is smoking into the dry gras,fur or even some hair. >Good Luck In The Wild

It can be made with stone tools very easily with a little time, it takes less than an hour to shape the board with stone tools

You could try to make a handle for your sharp rock too and secure it with cordage made out of wood or solid grass.

Go near a river, find some decent sized flint stone, smash it in two, you got yourself a sharp rock. Try to work with that.

+Lulzasaurus(I do not own this) The whole point of making a fire with sticks is that you don't have access to tools. Otherwise, you wouldn't need a block of wood; a lighter would suffice. Using the tools that are there are virtually pointless in any applicable situation as they've become obscured with modern ways of creating fire.

Lulzasaurus(I do not own this) but if I'm stranded on an island i wouldn't have a piece of wood with holes drilled in it. Great video but I am trying to find out how to do it without any tools :/
