Leave more fabric around the whole thing so that the sheet fits under the mattress and doesn't show, it will fit better and shouldn't just pop off easily.
If anyone is as lazy as me I just figured out you can take four hair bands and tie the 4 counters of the sheets in ponytails - under each corner of the bed. Yessss it works and took me 30 seconds
@@flowerchild777 I don't have a sewing machine 😢. I need to make a fleece twin sheet for my child's bed to keep him warmer in the up coming winter. I can sew but I'd love to find an easy way to do it.
This is exactly what I needed!!! Thank you!! I was so frustrated because the first 3 videos I clicked on was all the math and numbers and I’m more of a visual learner. Just using the mattress to measure the sheet was so helpful and exactly what I needed. I appreciated this video the absolute most! Thank you!
Hi there, I watched those other videos on how to make a fitted sheet as well. Basically cutting out a measured square from each corner... I ruined my sheet. This lesson makes sense.
I just did this and I’m a beginner. I made a cover for my ottoman. It’s not perfect but I am so proud of myself because I’ve never created anything sewing!! Thank you so much! It looks perfect!!!!
I did this just at the bottom 2 corners. I didn’t need elastic since I’m still using it as a top sheet. Now the sheet stays at the bottom while we are sleeping and it is so easy to make the bed.
Shouldnt you make the corner longer, not just fitted to the height of the mattress, so the fabric tucks under the mattress some otherwise it will just pop off all the time!!?
Thank you SO MUCH! My son needs a custom fitted sheet for his van conversion. "Sure, I can do that," I said with confidence. Um yeah...I usually only sew straight lines, with no fancy things like elastic - ha ha! I wish I had seen this before I did the rest of the sewing (I searched for how to sew on the elastic.). Maybe I'll make him a few sheets now!
You're welcome. Yes you can make a bunch of sheets for him...hit up the local thrift with a good linen section and you'll be able to do it for next to nothing. Thanks for commenting!
Thank you for this video - it really helped me! And I love how you don't use a top sheet because, in your house, everyone uses duvet covers that get washed regularly just like a top sheet would. I am going to convert to that rule right away because I'm all about keeping things simple. This rule will save my family lots of time - Thanks Mimzy & Co!
Am so glad i came across this i.was thinking of turning all my fitted Sheets into pillowcases..Thanks again now i only have to go shopping for elastic!!!!!😊😊👍👍👍👍
Like me I dont like using flat sheets because it makes making the bed more difficult. I too use a duvet or those soft like velvet to cover with. I now only purchase fitted sheets. I have kept two of them but thats it. I thought I was the only one.
Thank you so much Mimzy! This technique is so easy and fast! I wanted to convert a CA King Flat to a Semi-Fitted top sheet. This makes changing sheets so much easier. Linen companies used to offer semi-fitted top sheets, but now, they are very expensive and that's if you can find them. I am going to do this to all my flat sheets!!
Thankyou. I found your video so helpful. I have had this flat sheet in the linen cupboard for ages and wanted to make it into a fitted sheet but found a lot of videos a bit confusing so I put it off. Then I came across your video and it has worked a dream.
@@MimzyandCompany I was gifted several silk drapes and the back lining is 100% cotton. I have 1 full size and 1 queen size. I'm wondering if a seam down the middle would be too stressed if I sew 2 panels together. Any suggestions? Thanks so much for posting your video🤗
@@flowerchild777 no it wouldn't be too stressed. but it wont be comfortable to sleep on a seam. If it's down the middle then no-one will be sleeping in on it usually and it'll probably be okay.
I needed a queen size fitted sheet and did not have a king flat sheet to alter. I used to queen sheets, the second queen added to the side that needed to be cut. It didn't matter that I had a seam on the side. A little extra work, but I didn't have to buy a king sheet. This was the easiest video to follow and made it simple to do. Thanks.
In our home i also only use fitted sheets and duvets. So much easier making beds quickly. When I make my fitted sheets I like alittle more fabric fitted under the mattress. Also I store my over flow blankets under my fitted sheets. My linen closets fill up so easily. Love all your videos.
This method clearly works and makes sense, and the video is clearly explained. I have seen a more straight forward video that does not involve pinning a sheet on a bed, instead folding the sheet into quarters, measuring in from the corners, etc. Simpler, neater, more mathematical. I'm not complaining! I'm just sharing that there's a simpler way available. Thank you for your video, I'm really grateful that people take time to try things and share their success for us to learn from.
I see several styles/ways of making fitted sheets here on RU-vid. Pick one that is best for your needs. I like to be sure the measurements are spot on to make them look tight and well made with French seams and elastic for every corner of the bed. But my mom was a genius she used an old fitted sheet (that was her favourite sheet)...undid one corner of the old fitted sheet and that is what she used as a pattern for the new sheet. She knew it would fit with no problem. That is my personal favourite way to make a fitted sheet.
Yes! There are many ways to make things...the older i get , the more i realize that. I love the french seam corner idea! Then your sheet can be reversable.
I was able to use a twin flat sheet for my twin bed. I did this by ripping the top seam of sheet, which is usually folded over about 3-4".When I did this, it provided the length (top to bottom) that I needed. My mattress is about 10" in height.
I like the fitted sheets that have elastic all the way around, they fit better... especially for a person like my son, that moves around a lot on the bed. LOL
I use a duvet and a top sheet! My duvet has a cover, also; but, I love having the option of a top sheet over me. So much easier to change a top sheet than a duvet cover.
Hello Mimsy! Just discovered your video but im looking to do the other way around 😅 I need to convert a fitted sheet into a flat sheet. Could you do a tutorial for that? 😇 thank you so much! 😁
You wont be left with much fabric if open up a fitted sheet. The corners will be cut out. So you might be able to get a twin sheet out of a queen or king fitted sheet.
Hi Mimzy, Fantastic video. Just what I was looking for. As simple as it gets. About to attempt this having never even touched a sewing machine (borrowing my mum’s) to try to make some fitted sheets for odd shaped mattresses in my caravan. They are smaller than the average mattress. One question. In the video, when you are sewing on the elastic, for the first half it looks like you lap the sheet over the elastic but then after you take the pin out you don’t seem to do the lapping. So now I’m not sure whether to lap or not. Have a feeling I should for neatness. Would you mind telling what is the best option. Lap the whole of the elastic or not. I’ll be watching your video about 1000 times before I take the plunge. Haha 😂
yes, you're 100% correct. It looks like I started with the sheet folded over the elastic and ended with it not folded over or lapped. I think it just had a crease at first that made the fabric fold over and I just went with it. I'd say that your fabric will gather better if you do NOT lap the fabric over. because the more bulk you have sewn to the elastic the less it will gather up. does that make sense? When i've tried to put elastic on heavy weight fabric it doesn't gather very well, but thin fabric gathers really well with elastic. But that's just my opinion...sheeting is pretty thin so it probably wont make too much difference if you lap it. anyway...try it and see. 🙂
@@MimzyandCompany brilliant. Thanks for that. Makes sense. Less resistance on the elastic if it isn’t lapped over especially on a seamed edge. I’ll go with that. Seems to make sense and would probably be easier to do. Thanks again for the video. Is really great
It likely won’t be tall enough. It’ll probably be wide enough. You might be able to take out the double hem at the top of the sheet and get a few more inches to make it work. It depends on the sheets. You can lay it on the mattress and if it makes it to the bottom of the mattress on all four sides go for it.
Only if it's a California king sheet ...otherwise king and queen are the same length. both are 80" long typically so it likely wont be long enough. but it's worth trying because sometimes the flat sheets may be longer. so lay it down on the bed to see if it fits lengthwise.
Your king flat sheet is likely not long enough to make into a king fitted sheet. You might be able to take out the hem at the top and make it work. I’d lay it down on your bed and see if it make it from head to foot.
Interesting you don’t use your flat sheets because your have doona covers which you wash. I use a flat sheet as well as a doona cover because a doona cover takes more time to wash and iron. I can change the sheet weekly and the doona cover monthly as it doesn’t have contact with my body.
I used a twin size sheet. It just fit and won't go under because I have a 13" high mattress, but I didn't have a bigger sheet. I only had the corners to cut and since no one else will ever see it, I don't really care if it's not pretty, lol. I also didn't sew on any elastic as I'll be using the corner holder you can purchase online or even at dollar stores.
Your corners are much too complicated and sloppy. If the mattreiis 18"deep, just cut out an 18" square from the corner and stich the sides together. Voila. A tidy, neat corner.
what? who the hell just sweats their ass off with no flat sheet you are telling me you wash duvet cover and then wrestle the comforter back into the cover every week? yeah right and your bedding is dirty.....you use a flat sheet in conjunction with the duvet so you can wash the blessed thing and keep your bedding CLEAN someone who doesn't use a flat sheet to actually make the bed is just lazy
@@MimzyandCompany granted....but heres the thing you are making instructional videos about bedding and taking all this time to make a fitted sheet and you cant actually make a full bed? i fully understand though you do you.....also you probably coulda left that part out about not using a flat sheet lol because now all i can think of is taking a black light to the duvet cover....ummmm nope not trolling u just making a point have a good day luv
@@damianwildfong7278 and in the time it took you to insult the maker you could have used the California Roll method (search it on RU-vid) to insert your comforter into it's freshly laundered cover. 😀 There are lots of us who do sleep in beds made as this creator describes; nearly all of Europe, to start.
@@RedTileServices um no use a flat sheet my above description is why a flat sheet exists this is not something i made up these people usually don't wash their comforter point blank anyone who says they do is silly
@@damianwildfong7278 I wash my comforter, maybe two or three times a season. I wash it's cover weekly. Take it off, wash it, put it back on. Fresh and clean, just as fresh and clean as your flat sheet. Why is this such a difficult concept for you?
