I have never heard of end of life doula and I have worked in a large nursing home for 13 years. I was a CNA and and now currently work in the Activity Dept. I’m 68 and my daughter asks me how can I do this work after having a glamorous job for an international airline for so many years. (Quit after 9-11) I also get asked when will I retire. I’m in excellent health, I love these folks why would I ever retire? I get requested constantly to the room of the dying and to speak with the families, so I do a lot of this already. It is hard but you are right, it’s very rewarding. You’ve given me something to think about. I can’t imagine leaving my job or how I would swing this. Everything you said I completely agree with and wish there were more of you out there. It’s very much needed as there seems to be a crisis of not just the elderly.

Thank you for this it has been very very informative. I am a Hospice nurse in California and finished my doula program 4 months ago. I have been nothing but confused and frustrated about where to start in developing a practice. It's a mess out here and it is going to get worse with Medicare cutting funding all the time. So the need is gigantic. Thank you for being so candid about this and how not to set yourself up as burn out is real. I will definitely be rewatching this video.

I am so glad i found you. I just finished a book called Your Purpose is calling you. I currently work in elder care and want to offer care consultation. This full spectrum practitioner feels like the key to unlock my destiny. I have struggled with the fear of death my whole life. The book says your unique discontent may be the very thing you are here to do or help with. I have signed up for 4/18 class. Thank you for stepping into your calling and creating this space and opportunity

I need to volunteer somewhere. And learn, because my relationship with death is not the norm and I'm just going to see where this leads me. Well, I am definitely called to this work. Although I have been trained as an E.O.L. doula, making a living doing it is a whole different story. I did make a bit of money when I worked with the elderly (not within hospice) and patients with Alzheimer's...

I am a psychotherapist, who is drawn to know more about becoming a death doula. I really enjoyed your presentation and am very motivated ro learn more. One concern I have is whether or not potential clients are going to be able to afford my services as a full spectrum end of life doula. You described a couple who had five million dollars and then stated that in a short period of time, they would run out of money. The average caretaker in the U.S. probably has nowhere near this amount to be able to take care of a loved one. I was wondering if you have any thoughts on how an end of life doula might go about making sure that his/her services are available to average people, not just those who have amassed great wealth. Thank you very much for your time.

These services are typically private pay and the payment structure is similar to that of home health aides, but we always encourage our students to work on a sliding scale basis and to do pro bono work whenever appropriate to ensure that no one is ever turned away in their time of need due to financial reasons. We are also exploring the possibilities of these services being covered by long-term care insurance, although most people unfortunately do not carry this type of insurance. I know this is what I am meant to be doing. I have fought it because I know burnout is high. After spending the last 25 years working in the field in various roles I am pulled back.

This is my calling and my passion after being the full time caregiver during time on hospice for 2 family members. I took the EOL doula class from Vermont as it was all I could afford at the time. I am certainly wanting to take your class as I feel that connection to you. Do you split up the specialist training into smaller sessions or will you in the future? Now is my time, I feel it. I need to get rolling.

Hi, I live in NZ,we have no doula training here,we have to do it online via Australia. So many questions,the people living rural are the ones that miss out,they are widespread and have low incomes ,no jobs,.. everything you said would be so great to implement here but how and where and when,so much red tape. I have just been to my first death cafe. Was good discussion about nzs dying rules or lack of,learnt so much. Not sure how I will get into this side of things as I need to work as well. Go with the flow,it will be answered in some way. Thankyou for your information.
