Superman is an complex character that can mean a lot of things, the reason for the split amongst Superman fans is Man Of Steel. Where he's practically a different character, of course making "Their Superman", very different from the original source material, and I guess that's where the division comes from but again because instead of highlighting Superman's character, Man Of Steel focuses on his power and how the world would respond to it, kinda ignoring the point. I personally find it annoying when this happens, ignoring his identity as a character just for his evil Superman moveset. It's his morality not his 'scwawy' powers that should've ended up meaning something to the world in Man Of Steel.
One major rule is not messing with the basics. Hopeful , Clark Kent character, real arc nemesis, respect for supporting characters , good photo shots. ... And definitely no evil Superman bait.

I think fans write characters how they want, but then are told by their bosses that it's not what the fans are after, when, yes, it is what fans are after. Movies, DC movies in the Extended Universe specifically suffer from executive interference. Marvel had the advantage of using characters no one cares about before the movies.
Here's one specific thing I want from an actor playing Superman: someone who can play both Superman AND Clark Kent as completely distinct characters. Cause the whole shtick that makes Clark's disguise work isn't just a pair of glasses, it's his attitude, his demeanor, the way he slouches, the way he does his hair, wears slightly over-sized clothes to make himself look stocky instead of muscular, etc.
That's the vibe I'm getting from set photos on the new Superman movie. Not a fan of the hair he has as Clark, but it helps sell the idea that Clark and Superman are two different people
Its as simple as making Superman as human as possible. Watching the newest Death of Superman movie was actually what made me change my mind about the character after hating him for a long time. Of the big 3, Superman Batman and Wonder woman, Superman by far is the most human. Lex Luthor once hatched a plan to have Clark think Lois was divorcing him and that heartbreak almost took him out of commission entirely. Batman wouldn't give a shit about that, Wonder woman would shrug that off, but Clark is too human for that. He's fully bought into the human experience because he IS human in every way but biology. He doesn't have to pretend, he's not a God playing human. He's just a guy who can do extraordinary things and was raised right. He's a simple character from the ground up and that simplicity is where the genius lies.
You have a lot of good points. I think you have a good understanding of Superman's character. Sometimes, I think why writers have a hard time with Superman is because they don't really like Superman's character. They seem to have an issue with a idealized small town mentality that Superman should have to be true to his character.
Superman the Movie PUT the Kents back on the Farm and Clark at the Daily Planet when in the Comics of the 1970's the Kents in Superboy ran the General Store in Town and and Clark Kent in the Superman and Action Comics runs was a NEWS ANCHOR for WGBS News. They Purposefully Regressed him and he's been tanking in sales ever since if you're being Honest. Superman use to RULE THE ROOST so much so the DC was called SUPERMAN DC comics. Oh how the mighty fell and Nostalgia IMO was to blame.
Man I’d love they follow this blueprint. Honestly feels like it should be so easy to get right. Apart from a few aesthetic disagreements in the costume department which I assume were only used for the sake of ease in making this video, its honestly perfect. Also blew my mind with Goodman as Perry White casting. Like it felt so obvious after you said it and I just never thought about it. Feel like I’m over using the word perfect here, but it really would be perfect casting. One day. Superman is my favourite superhero and your pitch alone has so much love and passion for the character, far more than Warner Bros could give the character. I also think that in an ideal world I think we could see more than a trilogy for Superman as I am sure that there is so much to say about this character. Superman should be in-between Christopher Reeves and Henry Cavills versions but tone of the movies should be light mostly. I think it should have an overarching villain a Bryan Cranston Lex luthur a business man become a politician and to set his sites on becoming president by 4th movie. It should be a game of chess with him and the man of steel (body vs the mind). He should be able to turn the people against the man of steel and be experimenting of 2 or 3 Kryptonites. Lois should be a bit more like “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” as she is boring in every other on screen version. Every character should feel like a main character and not background. 1. The Superman - the movie should begin with baby superman landing earth and parts of his teen years with his powers in Smallville, with his disappearance after the death of his father. Moving to city life meeting Lois, office life hiding his identity, criminals/Lex to deal with and becoming superman. 2. The Man Of Steel - should deal with the questions do we need superman or has he made things worse, so an invasion story much like man of steel minus the massive destruction. The villain should be Zod with the quote “kneel before me” and lex winning and turning the people against superman. The people give superman 1 day on earth after zods defeat. Should be an very emotional send off for his mother and lois, he looks back on to earth and full speed ahead. The people back on earth look forward to a dark life without superman. 3. The Death Of Superman - we see a world without superman, then to superman trying to understand what zod meant (zod left his lab rat of a son on earth). The villain should be doomsday but not like the comics visibly more in human form that mutates slightly closer to 3rd act. So superman comes back few years later to find zods son (slightly like homelander form the boys) working with lex and hes taken superman's place with the people (sort of a city with 2 supermans). 4. The Man of Steel Returns - villain is james marsters version of brainiac and lex and also the black suit. Its about would be a bit of an Invasion of the Body Snatchers story, between zod and brainiac it’s about the rebirth of krypton on earth. Ends with supermans mums death and bit of the red Kryptonite and superman disappears. 5. The Man Of Tomorrow - starts with a very superman 3 superman who don’t care. Lex final gets superman powers so now we got a really smart lex with the superman powers from the brainiac deal and both go head to head for the fight for metropolis soul. This movie should be viewed at cinemas with 2 versions A and B viewings which the viewer can choose, where the 2nd part of the movie is different to accommodate 2 different endings.

I would remove Metallo from Man of Tomorrow. Parasite is good enough alone for the first movie as a physical threat. And Metallo is too similar with Parasite in terms as their function as a Superman villain. Also, introducing Kryptonite in the first movie is not a good idea, especially with a cyborg powered by the stuff.
Agreed. Plus Parasite could work to showcase Superman moral dillema in the first movie and what makes such iconic figure: His kindness and heroism. Parasite could be portrayed as tragic character, a innocent work who suffers a accident with chemicals and is turn into this monster who needs to feed on energy to survive. His rivalry with Superman could be very similar to Frodo and Gollum, with the hero trying not to hurt or kill Parasite but save him, unlike Lex Luthor, could play the role of antagonist, by taking advantage of Superman compassion towards Parasite to turn the public against the man of steel and try to kill Parasite by himself, so he can become Metropolis hero

Metallo could work as well but I think he would fit better the second movie, when Superman is already know by the public. I love your take on it. My one thing is I think I'd switch the stories of 2 and 3. I see Braniac as a ending villain, but also I think it gives more weight to Lex helping. If Lex ends the second movie defeated by Superman, but almost reflects on the ideology of Supes then in the third movie when he comes to help it shows the Supes ideology changed him in some way. Supes believing even Lex can change and then Lex acting on that would be a great little moment. Not completely changing him, but a little hope that a good man is in there.
God, I so wish this was all real. I just want a Superman movie that feels like it was made by someone who absolutely adores the character and everything he stands for. And on a side note, would love to hear who you'd cast for Conner Kent in a 4th or 5th film if you ever decide to continue this great concept.
Yeah, A Superman movie made by someone who actually understands and adores what the character stands for shouldn’t be a want, but what we need. Not a Superman film made by someone who insists on “deconstructing” the character of Clark Kent by making him essentially a flying Rambo just for the sake of making his own twisted bleak fantasy of what he thinks of comic superheroes to life
GD just showing the Geoff Johns Superman with your descriptions of what the movie should be while having that music in the background was so inspiring to me. I have goosebumps just from that, which is why I know if they just did half of what they should with Superman or would go down as a masterpiece of cinema.
It is honestly my favorite interpretation of Superman’s origin in the comics. For the majority of the story, Geoff Johns doesn’t let Clark’s Kryptonian heritage define him, but his humanity.

XD my god, I came up with my own version of a Superman trilogy - the first movie featured Ulysses, the 2nd featured Lex Luthor running for and becoming President, while funding Parasite and Metallo, and the 3rd featured Brainiac invading, and Superman and Luthor working together (President Lex in his power suit that had been developed out of Metallo) to defend Earth. Weird to see such similar ideas in a video.

Funny thing is, I've had my own ideas for a second Superman movie. Not a first or third. I'd have Livewire and Parasite be the villains. I know what you're thinking "Isn't that too much?", I'd establish Livewire in the first film, give a role like JJJ in NWH. She doesn't interact with the main cast directly but has some sway over how Superman is perceived. Make her echo issues people have held over Superman in the past, while he proves them wrong. The second film would have her and Parasite get powers in an accident, both blaming Superman for it. The two would work together to try and break Superman. Livewire would have more encounters with Superman, allowing her to see that she was wrong about him and making her doubt the plan. In the meanwhile, we would show Parasite progressively became more of a monster and embody all the claims Livewire made about Superman. This climaxes with Parasite betraying and attempting to drain Livewire only to be stopped by Superman. She helps Superman defeat Parasite in the end
I would like to see and watch it, it would be one of the best Superman movies alongside with the first Richard Donner's Superman movie and the animated Superman: Man of Tomorrow movie.

A lot of your ideas were some I had of my own we even had some of the same cast candidates I think david is an excellent choice for clark especially if he bulked up a bit also i had lex as a background villain for the first one to and i think something that could be added to the dynamic of lois and Clark's relationship is competition like on lois and Clark I'd start them both out young instead of loos already working at the planet much like recent the animated film
Both Superman (1978) and the current Superman & Lois TV Series both treat the character of Superman / Clark Kent with the respect he deserves. The Zack Snyder Man of Steel Superman Trilogy of films did not. The simple thing they meaning WB needs to do with Superman on film is write and come up with better stories on film for Superman / Clark Kent. Show more of the Clark Kent side of the character plus his roots in Smallville a bit that was I feel missing a bit in the Snyderverse films. Take the Superman & Lois approach to the character. That show has proven you can tell a good story in the tv format with Superman in the modern age and do it right. Hire a good director and have a good script for the film. Also make a movie for everyone to enjoy.
The fact with the critiques to Snyder is that I think they try and go too deep, when the problem, in my opinion, is actually way more surface level (but not less severe, it's just a different area): it's not the character's heart and principles that Snyder doesn't understand; he kinda does; what's wrong is simply his basic attitude, his personality, the small ways in which he reacts to people and events around him. The point I'm trying to make is that Clark Kent, much like his Japanese "cousin" Goku, is a cheerful, optimistic, easygoing dude. His immense power should not be the first thing that strikes you about him when he's on screen. That should be his smile, his laughter, the way he makes you feel at ease. Snyder's Clark, I think it's difficult to deny, acts like a SLIGHTLY less serious Bruce Wayne, and that's not how he's supposed to behave. That's not how Superman's personality is. As I wrote in my comment above, if you want a live action example of how Clark Kent's character could be like in a modern Superman movie, take a look at the character of Desmond Doss, played by Andrew Garfield, in Mel Gibson's "Hacksaw Ridge". That's the idea, in my opinion.
All of this I love! I want an optimistic Superman so much! I appreciate Superman and Lois for tv, but the films have yet to capture that. I like this trilogy and wish it was real.
From a young age, I always saw Superman very similar to Captain America in terms of how they’re both heroes who are very human and try to see the best in people without changing his ideals in the face of adversity

If this kind of trilogy were to have a spin off series, I think “Superman’s Pal: Jimmy Olsen” would be good. It could provide some world building, introduce new characters (both within and outside) of the Superman mythos, go more in-depth with not just Jimmy but also with other members of the Daily Planet and everyday citizens of Metropolis while maintaining the weirdness and sincerity of the silver age in modern day. Although that’s just me talking and yes I would love to see live action versions of Jimmy’s odd counterparts like Elastic Lad or a giant turtle, but feel free to disagree

SUPER FRAME, I think your ideas for Superman movies and even Superman casting would work. You definitely put a lot of thought into it, and definitely show a good understanding of who Superman is and what he stands for. While I do think that Superman is doing well in animation and on the Superman and Lois series, I hope that people can learn from your example to create good modern live action Superman movies.
What do you think about American Alien? I personally like the slightly irreverent tone as it really humanizes Clark. Also I love your emphasis on making the Daily Planet Crew and Metropolis as a character.

I’ve always had an idea for a Superman and lex fight, an amazing fight we’re Superman goes into the atmosphere to not cause collateral damage, punches are thrown, eye lasers, kryptonite, but then Superman is about slam lex into earths ground but then Superman saves lex by holding him right above the ground, lex then exclaims “Why, why did you saves me?!” Superman then says “ because I would never kill” lex than says “what are you” Superman than states “more human then you ever will be”
That whole intro was just awesome, no idea what that orchestral song was that you played as a ‘title screen’ about 2 mins in but it made the entire video feel super cinematic

I’ve recently fallen in love with Superman and down research and plan to read more comics. I’ve begun outlines for my own quadrilology of Superman films and quite a few of the ideas resemble yours. I really enjoy these fan looks at Superman and hope these can make a full story a reality. Maybe more than a trilogy I’m order to tell what they need.
Dude your first film pitch is almost exactly my first Superman film pitch. Insane! I love it. David is also perfect for the role I’ve been wanting David to be Superman for the past few years I think honestly and unfortunately we won’t see a good Superman movie in our life time 😢.
I love everything about this, from the casting choices to the plot ideas. Superman was, is, and will always be a symbol of hope, an ideal to look up to. But he's also a very human, deeply vulnerable character. A movie that can balance both these sides of the character would be the perfect adaptation, much like Richard Donner's movie was. Man, I really, sincerely hope James Gunn's Superman is as good as the character deserves.
So.... I started watching superman and Lois..... It's GREAT. Like holy shit I'm invested more into Clark and Lois than I was in the Snyder films (I enjoyed them, but not as much as I hoped) they feel like genuine people. And making Clark a dad was a genius decision, I'm someone who has a brother and dam Jordan and Jonathan's relationship feels just like mine with my brother. Dam good show.
It would be cool in the first movie we get that speech from johnanthon kent. Where a young Clark wants to play sports and his father tells him his powers are meant for so much more. And I like treating this trilogy with a Raimi-esque earnestness and heart. That's what Superman is all about. And I loved your analysis of why third films tend to falter when they've lost one or more of those storytelling stakes.

I know you prefer only 3 movies, but I had an idea for a fourth movie: (either) Superman Rise of Steel or Superman Men of Steel: About where Superman is a father to toddlers while a new guy name John Henry has an armored suit. They both see each other and fight each other at first as a misunderstanding. Meanwhile Doomsday in his pod starts to a trajectory to Earth. We learn more about John Henry and start to like him. Supergirl would return as Superman thinks he has to do the job by himself which is an inner struggle. Doomsday lands and Superman fights him and loses, but Steel and Supergirl comes to help. They defeat Doomsday together and Superman realizes he can’t do it himself. He learns he’s not alone and can rely on others so he can focus more on being Clark Kent and father. This movie is like an aftermath like the beginning of his new journey as father like Johnathan Kent with Lois

Being in LA for the past few years, I realized why Superman is so difficult to adapt in Hollywood. It's simple, the common Los Angelino and/or movie exec identifies more with Lex Luthor than Clark Kent. Clark is a literal alien, but Lex is a metaphorical alien. He is well removed from people. So based on how most LA people are, they wouldn't like a person like Clark Kent.
When I think about what I'd want from a Superman movie, an example that always comes to my mind is "Hacksaw Ridge" by Mel Gibson. I believe the way the movie gets you to root for Desmond Doss while he refuses again and again to be corrupted by violence and brutality, through still wanting to help via his kindness and compassion, is exactly the way you should feel for Clark Kent in my ideal Superman movie.
I would have to partly disagree. I think superman should be a grounded (no Krypton or space Ventures) 3 hour long epics, with drama and action also a Pentology 5 movies long, as 3 is too short, themes should be hope, crime and a bit on media and how they report it initially at least, the experiment would be what happens if we put a superman in a city what would criminals do? Superman should be in-between Christopher Reeves and Henry Cavills versions but tone of the movies should be light mostly. I think it should have an overarching villain a Bryan Cranston Lex luthur a business man become a politician and to set his sites on becoming president by 4th movie. It should be a game of chess with him and the man of steel (body vs the mind). He should be able to turn the people against the man of steel and be experimenting of 2 or 3 Kryptonites. Lois should be a bit more like “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” as she is boring in every other on screen version. Every character should feel like a main character and not background. 1. The Superman - the movie should begin with baby superman landing earth and parts of his teen years with his powers in Smallville, with his disappearance after the death of his father. Moving to city life meeting Lois, office life hiding his identity, criminals/Lex to deal with and becoming superman. 2. The Man Of Steel - should deal with the questions do we need superman or has he made things worse, so an invasion story much like man of steel minus the massive destruction. The villain should be Zod with the quote “kneel before me” and lex winning and turning the people against superman. The people give superman 1 day on earth after zods defeat. Should be an very emotional send off for his mother and lois, he looks back on to earth and full speed ahead. The people back on earth look forward to a dark life without superman. 3. The Death Of Superman - we see a world without superman, then to superman trying to understand what zod meant (zod left his lab rat of a son on earth). The villain should be doomsday but not like the comics visibly more in human form that mutates slightly closer to 3rd act. So superman comes back few years later to find zods son (slightly like homelander form the boys) working with lex and hes taken superman's place with the people (sort of a city with 2 supermans). 4. The Man of Steel Returns - villain is james marsters version of brainiac and lex and also the black suit. Its about would be a bit of an Invasion of the Body Snatchers story, between zod and brainiac it’s about the rebirth of krypton on earth. Ends with supermans mums death and bit of the red Kryptonite and superman disappears. 5. The Man Of Tomorrow - starts with a very superman 3 superman who don’t care. Lex final gets superman powers so now we got a really smart lex with the superman powers from the brainiac deal and both go head to head for the fight for metropolis soul. This movie should be viewed at cinemas with 2 versions A and B viewings which the viewer can choose, where the 2nd part of the movie is different to accommodate 2 different endings.
Literally almost had the same set up as you when I did this mental exercise two years ago First movie, villain Metallo and the villainous love triangle with Lois that leads to Superman needing to reveal his identity to Lois. They get married. Second movie Brainiac and Kandor. Also Superman and Lois have a baby girl who's maybe 5. Third movie, Clark and Lois's daughter is now ten or fifteen years old, so significant time jump again. This time adapt the new Krypton arc (but remove Zod if you think he's overplayed). Have Supergirl trying to find her place on earth, Superman's daughter trying to find her place on New Krypton, and Superman himself caught in the middle between earth and new Krypton, trying to make sure everyone is good and happy
Now that I think about it, Billy zane is FREAKISHLY IDENTICAL in Physical Looks and even in voice(his voice is smooth and deep, sounds like a younger slightly less deep Clancy brown, imo). And well his acting, is I think capable maybe, but honestly, everything Ive seen in him in the last maybe 7-5 yrs, he’s only in b movies, and he’s usually goofy and over the top always. But eitherway, I have many other picks that Im way more confident in their ability to BE/SHOW LEX LUTHOR.
Seeing this put out as a trilogy would be so great. If DC really wanted to, to follow the lines you’ve layered out, they could really do a 4th film if needed. Maybe after 1-3 there isn’t as much a lineage, but sort of an icing on the cake: a nice contained smaller story. It would be cool to see a sort of adaptation of Superman vs the fatal five. While with lex you truly did question his view on humanity being worth fighting for, you could have the fatal five appear as he may begin to question after so long id theres a better way to be a hero or something along the lines. The fatal five would play into a more drastic but seemingly effective way of stopping villains. Theres a lot there in that story that would make for a god movie given some tweaking. As for maybe a five, if you need to kill hm off, maybe an allstar superman/death of superman mashup of some kind. That could definetly work. Maybe throw in the justice league funeral as a cameo like we saw in Justice League Unlimited. That way you could see what is, presumably a vast universe of characters, honor one of the best among them
in the second movie as it is braniac i would like to see flashes of other cities like gotham, washington, central city, etc as the other heroes defend their cities it would be a cool thing showing why the other heroes aren't there and hitting home supermans power

Wow! This casting is incredible (seriously this is a true passion and you really put a lot of thought into it). I also really love your ideas for a trilogy and I would definitely take a very similar approach towards my own dream Superman franchise (not just a trilogy about an entire ensemble of films). Also, I have 100% agree that Brad Bird has to direct a Superman film as he has proven that he has a true and genuine love for the character and his directing and wholesome and compact storytelling would work incredibly well.

Very good ideas (although I think Zod is already used way too much in the movies, you could other Superman alien villains like Braniac or Mongul) In my case, my Superman trilogy would be 1st movie - It would focus on Clark arrival in Metropolis and him revealing himself to the world for the first time as Superman. The villain would be Parasite, a lexcorp worker who is turn by accident into a monster with uncontrollable hunger for energy with the drama from the film coming from Superman trying to help Parasite and cure him from his mutation, while Luthor tries to kill Parasite so he can become the city's hero. 2nd movie - It would have Superman dealing with the Toyman, in this version one of Clark's friends from smallville, who has a obsession for Lana Lang and wants her to be his "doll". The movie would also develops Clark and Lois relationship, as Clark after reconnect with lana, accepts how they changed after their break up and is able to move on, revealing to Lois his secret identity and the two become a offical couple. 3rd movie - It would take Superman to space, with him having a adventure on Warwold, helping to free it's people from Mongul. The movie would also introduce Supergirl, who would start as one of Mongul's warrior who Superman meets and, after discovering that he is his lost cousin, Kara joins him in the fight against the tyrant.
