I love how you don't make this intimidating like some other people do, they act like its the end of the world if you get a little messy and absolutely loose their minds if you even touch the plaster a tiny bit with your hands.

I am so glad to have found your channel! Although I wish I had found it sooner. I'm really looking forward to learning how to get all of that clay out of your plaster mold. I tried to make a latex mask for my son (he wanted to be Sloth from the movie Goonies) and it turned out okay, not as perfect as I had hoped, but I really struggled getting the clay out of the mold. I had followed another RU-vidrs advise and used wood glue as a barrier between the clay and the plaster and it really did not work well for me at all, I will use the gloss Kryolan paint from now on. Can't wait for the next video :)

Yeah, always go with the recommended amount of water in a cement or plaster mix, don't increase the water to increase your working time - chemically speaking it doesn't "dry", it "sets" - so it'd be like adding more water to jello - it'd still set in about the same time, it just wouldn't set as firmly.

The clay removal from the pottery plaster seems like a tough job. Is there a way that silicone or something rubbery and flexible is used to make the mold instead of the pottery plaster so it just pulls off easily?
@iLoafCallumKay
@iLoafCallumKay 4 года назад
You could use silicone, but you're going to get a much better casting with a plaster mold. You could always try a fibreglass mold too. Plaster is always the best, and cheapest, though

Note that not all plasters follow the same workflow. For example, mixing Plaster of Paris with your hands tends to cause said hands to be amputated. The problem isn't so much that it solidifies, but that it's solidifying at around 150°F.

It is usually fairly dry before casting, but it doesn't have to be. The paint works well either way.

@@eviledwin777 Will the sculpture come off of the armature easily without the molding process? I want to focus on sculpting monsters first. Then learn about molding.
@DistortionsUnlimited
@DistortionsUnlimited 4 года назад
Hello! Well if you make sure not to let the clay dry too much than yes it will come off fairly easily and you can reuse it for a future sculpt to keep work on things. Have you watch our latest Monster Lab on WED clay? Ed goes over covering the sculpture and the quality of WED clay in that one in depth. But of course you can use oil clay also and that will not dry out.

great video ed! question-- why does some of my latex not cure in the mold? just little spots here and there. could it be the sealer that i use on the sculpture that gets absorbed into the plaster mold? i used glossy rustoleum sealant. i will for sure use krylon next time. Thanks again for your videos.
@eviledwin777
@eviledwin777 7 лет назад
It could have stuck to the mold and is not allowing the latex to absorb. Or it could be a contaminant. Be sure and let the Krylon dry over night.

@DistortionsUnlimited
@DistortionsUnlimited Месяц назад
The clay will still be soft enough to remove from the sculpture if you don't wait too long after the plaster has set up. Once you spray the clay before molding that will act as a mold release to help remove the clay as well.
