Hi ,Very similar to what I have done but what you must remember is that the black turn cap is just clipped on ,now that you have made a hole in the bottom to release pressure in to the dipstick body .pressure/oil mist can seep under the black cap. I sealed mine so the pipe is the only place for pressure to get out. Keep up the great work my friend. If it doesn't work a new dipstick is only 20 quid.
I'm going to do this with a few small changes...I will use clear silicone tubing and make a larger vent hole in the cap, this way you can visibly see any oily build up in the tube. Not riding season here yet but when I get it done I will leave some feedback...Thank you for the video...Very helpful...
Great video, I'll say one thing you do a good job showing people how to do things themselves and a hell of alot cheaper,if you go and buy all the aftermarket parts to fix the oil problems on HDs your talking thousands of dollars, keep up the good work 👍
Thanks for the video but I think that the hole of tle ball pump pin is way to small if you consider the volume the piston are expelling. High flow in a small hole yield higher speed hence higher pressure that with a bigger hole.
I know the fueling has a 1 way check valve and I know you mentioned this in your video. The A1 ventilator (not for softail) has the theory the engine breaths both ways to best to have it free flowing.
Top work, great shout. I looked at all the options available to us in the UK from US and to your point, only really the fueling 1 that will post to the UK and the price is just crazy. Appreciate your vlog.
Cut the stick’s O ring off and carry a rag to wipe off oil as necessary! I had this on one of my old Honda Fours back in the day. Of course, it was laziness that allowed it to stay that way, I didn’t realize I was an early adopter in the crankcase ventilation world!
I was gonna buy the Feuling one, but realized I could easily make one myself and save over 200$ doing so. My design is fairly similar to yours but the air passage is much larger. That air hole tube you used however is not large enough for pass through. The line needs to be 1/4th inch or larger. Demonstrate this by trying to breathe through that tiny tube, then go grab a juicebox straw. You can't breathe at all through that little tube, you'll pass out. You can almost breathe properly through the juicebox straw. Get a regular straw and you can breathe just fine. Same with the engine. That hole wont be large enough to let pressure pass through properly and will allow oil to channel up into the breathers. You arent going to notice much of a difference trying to let the engine vent through a hole meant to fill up soccerballs and basketballs slow enough that kids dont pop them.
Thank you so much for this mod ! I'll wait a little bit to hear what your feelings are about this. The Feuling parts have been confusing a lot people lately :-)
Thanks for the video. From the limited information I know any m8 engine stage 2 or higher recommend having a vent due to higher compression and possible dry sumping issues. Great cheap fix!
I'm still not sure what I'm going for, DK customs in the US make the EBS, still waiting for a reply on the total cost, they want $44 just for the catch can without any of the hose or attachments, once I hear back I'll let you all know. I've got to admit that you've done something that will do just the same job, Yeh not fancy but that gives you £300 to spend on something nice for your bike or the missus, depending what means more to you lol, but good fix Alf, at least you've got the confidence to try it for the rest of us, I just don't agree with having to spend over £300 on the bike, yes the feuling vented dip stick looks the part and is very well put together, but its one or the other, vented dip stick or the EBS, there's arguments for both options, I'm definitely going to be looking out to see how you're getting on with it and see if it actually does help, a very simple, cheap remedy and looks like it will work, excellent video Alf👍.
Oil pump on 2020+ M8 bikes is supposed to take care of sumping issues. Oil transfer issue was mainly with hydraulic clutches on touring bikes. 2021 Softails have a vented transmission cover. No oil transfer on my FLSB that I've been able to discern, but, i've not taken her on a long run yet.
I have a 22 Road Glide Special I was doing 80 miles an hour for long periods Of time all of a sudden I felt like something was pulling my bike back like an anchor was attached. This happened two weeks ago this is a very weird feeling. So apparently sumping is definitely an issue.. I'm definitely going to get vented dipstick... The sumping issue was not resolved totally... You'll see when you do high speed for a long. Of time.
Cheers Neil. Yep it worked really well. It went through some variations but an inexpensive way to do it. I did some follow up vids I think too on it. Cheers
Great vids Alf, but u should mention that some of those football valves only work one way. So if u push it in to inflate ball the air won't expel back out. Therefore not what u would use for this application.
Thanks for Sharing ,,,Just an idea ,, You can cut a Thin piece of Cigarette Filter and place it into the Top of Inflatable Head / Oval part to Stop anything Entering and just to provide a a Filtering Barrier.. Great Idea Alf..
The first thing you may notice is that the dipstick will be easy to remove after a 40+ minute ride; prior you may have noticed it was hard to remove because of the pressure building in the crankcase!
@@RevelatorAlf For the past 18 months until last week, every time I went out on a 45+ min. ride I’d check my oil level but realize at least half the time the dipstick was difficult or even not able to be moved by hand. I assumed the plastic expanded and forced the oil out from the grooves in the stick and was hung up from expanding. Instead, pressure pushes up on the stick and makes it hard to turn.
Brilliant, only flaw I can see is that if for some reason you did get excessive oil through that system you could oil the rear tyre. Although I couldn’t see the exact routing on the video
But this venting is only required on the Touring range with hydraulic clutch which suffers from oil transfer from the gearbox to the primary. It’s not required on the Softails with a cable clutch
I $pent too much already on the H-D oil level/ temperature gauge dipstick. Someone should use your DIY vent technique on the super expensive temp/oil level dipstick. I want to add venting to mine. But I don’t want to drill my holes in the wrong places and destroy the electronics.
@@RevelatorAlf You miss this Revelator, the poster thinks his crankcase is vented already.. Yep Tom, your transmission was already vented at factory.. Revelator is talking CRANKCASE ventilation (though I don't think the dipstick method is the better way to do it)
On ur video from a month ago , u r saying that there is no data that supports about the carbon build up , so u r giving an impression that don’t vent the cap because of sensors and data . But from other videos the vent pipe was add on because of back pressure in the crank case .
Yes, I clearly state in all of these videos that I am sceptical and I'm trying to generate some data and am only experimenting with these modifications to see if they work or not
I am trying to gather more data on this. I am producing another video for a homemade fix too and then determine whether it has any benefit or not. But I'll have to put some mile on it before there's any results. Cheers
So heres a lesson learned…I have a 2018 Road King M8 107ci. I routed my upper breather hose out of the stock air intake mod. When i screwed the cover back on, the vacuum hose i used got pinched between the cover & the air filter by accident. Well, went for a ride & it was running weird, oil light came on. Stopped at a gas station & decided to check the oil, unscrewed it & oil exploded all over me, the pump & the side of the bike was covered in hot oil. It blew half a quart out. I refilled it, removed the air filter & saw where it was pinched. I feel lucky that the head gasket didn’t blow. The pressure in the bottom end was unreal. It just shows how important it is for this engine to breath.
@@RevelatorAlf can you do a how to external breather using a screaming eagle elite air cleaner. There's alot out there for other air filters but none for this application.
@@RevelatorAlf thanks for the reply Alf! Alot of guys and girls here in Sydney Australia have this set up but hard to find anyone here that want to help. Look forward to it when you get around to it.
Engine's and transmissions need to breath. The Greenies think you can just seal them up. Well you can't do that and not expect the norman venting action to take place somewhere and the current design is causing problems because it's venting through the intake and exhaust ports via the engine case. That's very bad in a dry sump engine design. Venting through the oil tank is not the best way to do it but it's better than no venting at all. The primary needs to be vented as well. If I had a new Harley Davidson (which I never will) I would install fittings on the engine, transmission, oil tank, and primary case with vent hoses attached to a proper breather box and filter.
Personally, I think the price of the store bought vented dipstick is ridiculous. A person truly has more money than common sense if they feel they must have one.
Thanks for watching. Let me know what you think in the comments below. More videos like this here: ru-vid.com/group/PLmgCmljtdCzWrLg62oZxo0laIsmq4j67P As an addition: You may experience oil seeping from the base of the black cap. This is because it isn't a sealed cap. So you can either put on o ring or gasket sealer or what I have done is place some cloth on the inside of the dipstick shaft after removing the black cap. This still allowing airflow but stop the oil coming out.
