Awesome video for a heavy duty leash!! It took me a couple tries as I let go of the strands and lost track of which cord was last. I finally finished it and purchased your mandrel for the Turk's Head knot. It takes some time, but definitely worth it! Mahalo!!
This is a GREAT video for a Herringbone leash! I have been trying to create herringbone leashes and have challenges with starting and stopping, your techniques are awesome! I think I might need that tool used to create the knot on the end of the leash handle. Very excited to make new leash! Thanks
Great video. I have created this all the way up to the handle at the end. Instead of the handle I would like to add a d-ring. I have about 8 inches of the 8 strands at the end. What is the best way "knot" to attach the d-ring to the leash securely?
Yes, you can make it with any number of colors. If you use an odd number, you will just have to use more of one color, since the 8 strands is not divisible by 3.
Yeah I'm doing this cuz my dog I have a 100 lb 120 lb Staffordshire terrier LOL and she keeps snapping these dumbass chains and we can't have it and it seems like the more money you spend on something the cheaper the s*** is unless you make it yourself
I have a Presa Canario. I’m thinking about putting a metal spring on the one I make, at the end…. So basically it would be the leash, a spring, snap for my dog’s collar. I think the spring will help. Idk why lol just seems like a good idea lol
Do you have a Leash Length Chart? If I wanted to make the same leash at 12ft use blank length of cord or a 13ft leash use blank length of cord, or 20ft leash use blank length of cord? Up to maybe 30 feet, to be used for Service Dog leashes. Also, could I use 750 paracord (it's what I currently have) or would it be impossible to work with? Thanks for the video! It's great.
Rural king sells horse leads that wouldal so work and I can buy similar leashes well under $200 locally but I think they may beover 550 paracord? Idk it is thick, 8strand and I believe excessive but shorter but long, I may redo one as 4 strand to increase the length for running my dog in an open space, it however didn't use the first or extra knot which I think is a great touch. I may start buying and redoing the heavy duty leashes I can buy because it is cheaper then if I buy the cord and clips and I can make them longer which I have heard people here have trouble finding a good heavy duty leash that has much length
Awesome, I am glad I came across this video. I have a Belgian Malenois and she has chewed through the standard leash. Going to make this for sure but might make it longer and one that is only 2' or 3' to match. I found a video on how to make the monkey fist so I am going to make some dog toys out of that for her also. :-)
You sure could! We don't have a video for that yet, but here's a similar tutorial from a fellow creator: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J14IslvChLw.htmlsi=BbPTFf1qMXBCMAsE.
Hey! I was wondering if there’s a way to end with an adjustable handle. I’d like to make a leash I can wear around my waist so I can be hands free when needed. I have a 10lbs dog so I’m not worried about her squeezing my waist if she pulls. Thanks!! This video is great!
Yay! Thank you so much for this tutorial. I love these colors. Time for new paracord. 🙂 Is there a way to secure this to my jig to give me some tension? I’m concerned my weaving will be too loose if I don’t use my jig. But I haven’t tried without yet.
Awesome! Thank you. I own the 60” ultimate jig you sell. It’s my favorite tool I own. At first I was a bit intimidated by it, but once I figured it out - it’s makes my projects so much easier and I’m not frustrated trying to measure and keep my work secured to other surfaces. Thanks again for your amazing products and tutorials.
I have a cleat mounted at chest height on a wooden pillar, and braid while standing. I attach the standing end of the braid to the cleat, allowing the working strands to dangle. BTW, if you roll up and bundle the free end of each of the individual working strands (either on a bobbin or as a center-pull ball), you can minimize the tangling from the reverse brand. Finally, a spring clamp or a clothes pin is a helpful way to temporarily stabilize the braid when you need to give your hands a rest.
@@dankolar6066 Thanks for this helpful information. I’m a beginner and am not familiar with some of the terminology you used, but I’m going to “research/investigate/look it up” and try your techniques. It’s always helpful to get tips from others.
or pull the inner cords out a bit and cut them off and heat a flat metal tool and press it against the cord ends to melt them without any darkening, with the inners trimmed all you have is the matching paracord without black spots
I'm in the same boat. Starting the leash part is messing me up because the video got sped up and I can't follow how the lines land. It isn't making sense for me.
First time watching a few days again and I am currently working on this leash. I do have a question about losing your place when working the leash, is there a way to help identify which cords should be on the left and which ones should be on the right?
Use clothes pin or tie cords in a bundle on each side. Color code or use labels for left and right. This is common practice when braiding multi strand projects
I mean yeah it looks cool, but if someone is just bored or looking to just make a leash at a specific length who would want to do this? I will go look for a hand knitted technique cause this is way to much.
Hi I hope you'll be able to answer me. I would like to do this leash but for 20 feet long as a training leash & for free walk With my dog. How much long I need for each strays for a 20 feets leash for my 6months German Shepherd, thanks a lot !
Good question! You can slow it down right here in RU-vid by clicking on the gear in the bottom right side of the video. It can go as slow as .25 speed, but just a disclaimer the video might get a little choppy. We'll keep this in mind when editing future videos though! A lot of viewers prefer to learn in real time or slower, which we will try to show moving forward.
@@ParacordPlanet Thank you! I couldn't figure out how to slow it down so I could figure out what y'all were doing. I appreciate the knowledge you gave me. I can't wait for some other projects in the future!
The person I plan to make the leash for measured the current one they have as 6' (base with clasp to base at handle) woth a 14" loop (laid flat for the handle). I'd like to keep that as close as I can to the measurements they gave me XD Edit: I think 8' or close to it would work. Sorry, having trouble seeing straight right now. Reading is a little difficult.
This was my first time ever working with Paracord and it was a perfect guide! The leash came out just like it's supposed to be, i just made some slight changes by adding in some steel-rings and a carabine at the end so that im able to alternate lenghts.
@@carolynbrooks892 Pretty much the same way he showed in his video, but instead with a handle like he did i used a carabine in the end and then spliced the remaining paracords.
Other than the 8-strand braid, most of the fancier knots can be replaced with simpler ones, and the leash will still have the same strength. The Matthew Walker definitely takes some practice to get right!
Regarding the Turks Head knot at the end.. was there a video posted? How do you incorporate the two colors of cord? Also how many pins down do you go so it will cover the raw edges of the leash? Thanks! Love your videos & products ♡ 🐾
Hi! A video on how to use the Turk's head mandrel can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aTlEnMW9p4Q.html. I put pins in the 1st and the 7th row to make the dog leash covering knot. Doing two colors on this design is actually pretty easy. When I add the second pass in the linked video, instead just add your second color.
what a GREAT looking Dog leash!!..THAT being said- the SAD TRUTH is this: because of the COMPLEXITY of the Braids and the motor skills required in the making of this leash-leaves us with this sad fact: That only ONE out of 10 humans that watch this video could DUPLICATE such a braiding feat.. But on the other hand for us other NINE humans, it was a blast to watch!!
Great tutorial! I am working on a leash using leather instead of paracord and it is beautiful! There was a learning curve there at the beginning but thank you!
This is one wicked cool leash! I made a lanyard with that square braid chain. It looks OK, I didn't like the finished product so much because I zoned out and made the knots so tight and it is uneven and stiff. If I tried again, I would treat the cord like a newborn
@@carololson4453 When it's tightened down sufficiently, the friction keeps it in place. Since both the leash and the Turk's head are bumpy surfaces, it's pretty impossible to slide.
