WARNING: Copper tubing must be cleaned with vinegar steam prior to use, unless you use the still every day. Look up how to do this BEFORE you work any still.

I'm very involved in this sort of thing (I'm in my 87th year) and Thyme is one of my favourite teas. Extremely effective if you have a tickley cough. Thanks for producing this very helpful video. In my opinion, nothing finer than natural medicine. Keep up the. good work!

I would suggest finding a clear glass bottle which will fit with that bottle top. Cut off the bottom of the bottle, attach the dispensing top, done. The other problem with using that type of bottle is that it's plastic, and plastic #1, which is really unstable & leaches into products, including the original drink which was purchased in it.. Essential oils degrade plastics quickly, especially that type of plastic, so your end product - the essential oil - is likely to have plastic contaminants in it, as would your essential oil water (the distillate), which you had said you planned on using in cooking. I work with essential oils, formulating natural herbal products, so I'm aware of these issues. Plastic is never the way to go with these, or any, oils. Store your end products - the oil & the distillate - in glass containers with tight fitting lids to prevent loss of volatile oils (which are also present in the water, just in lesser amounts). Really nice design. I will be trying this out myself in the future. Thanks very much for the video, very nicely done.
@GiveUTremors
@GiveUTremors Год назад
Absolutely right. Essential oils eat into plastics. This design is good and very workable. I think there is way more water in the finished product which may lead to oil getting spoiled sooner. I have tried using anhydrous Sodium Sulphate but the quantity required is too much when the water content is similar to that as obtained in this video. It clumps up so its removal is tedious, especially when you get essential oils in very small quantities as in this video. Also, the water is not removed completely. Any ideas how to remove the water and moisture completely from distilled essential oils ?

Putting dried herbs/plant natter into carrier oils (olive, grapeseed, etc) is definitely NOT producing essential oils! This is called infusing and does not produce essential oils, only infused oils. 2 totally different types of oils. In order to get essential oil, you have to steam distill or cold press the plants!! Not being rude, but please educate yourself on these 2 totally different processes.

It wastes a lot of oil collecting, draining, or storing oils using anything plastic or rubber. distill directly to a glass container and siphon off the lower layer of liquid using a giant syringe with a long blunt tip. Or don't they have glass IV containers? Seems that would work for collecting the distillate. Then you could attach the hose and lid and invert it I guess. Not sure 😬.... I have a large huge glass funnel and just drained the liquid like that. But it's pretty awkward 😂

You absolutely can not use plastic- smooth or otherwise- in distillation or storage of e oils. They melt plastic within 10 or so hours. I was totally impressed with how much good looking e oil you got!! I never thought a dried herb would yield like that🤗....very nice! I'm off to home Depot for copper tubing and hose!! Good job 👍👌!!
@DaMalat
@DaMalat 2 года назад
I've never had an issue but take on board everything you've said. I'll swap out the plastic tube for copper and look to see if it's possible to add something to the video as a revision. I used this particular herb for the video as I get a high oil yield and seem to get a higher yield from dried Thyme and Rosemary than I do from fresh (really not sure why). I also get high yields from spruce and pine (to make disinfectant). I have failed to get any oil on a few others though, especially rose petals. Maybe the copper tube extension will make a difference?
@russashby1697
@russashby1697 2 года назад
@@DaMalat if you don't have an issue with melting plastics, I wouldn't worry about replacing it. I think my bottles leaked and collapsed because I used full bottles of purified water and added 10 drops of floral e oil to each bottle to make scented rinses for my hair. I made 10 at a time, but I used 1 daily. I guess oils were in the bottles too long. I think your process is awesome, and I can't wait to d-i-myself!!

Thank you for a very good clear presentation. A couple of questions or comments. I think plastic tubing and collection bottle are not safe unless it specifically says they are food safe types of plastics. Question: why copper tubing please? Thank you
@DaMalat
@DaMalat 2 года назад
@@arheufu5988 I researched this project using several sources. All of the distillery information from the USA shows copper tubing being used. Also, I visited a brandy distillery and they used copper tubing. I was advised to use copper tubing designed for domestic water installations. I have since replaced the plastic tubing with more copper tubing.

@@DaMalat thank you very much for your prompt reply. I just wondered if there was a particular reason for using copper, so I can plan in case it must be copper or if I can replace it with an appropriate alternative tubing once I understand why copper is being used. 🙏

If you take the sports drink bottle with the ribs and apply heat to the ribs (not excessive heat) you will get the ribs to expand out and have a smooth side. You may get better results with doing that before you cut the bottom off, not sure. I just watched a youtube video once where it was done and it worked well.

But if you took your 100g of wet herb and dried it you'd have a lot less than 100g when dried. Using wet herb just saves the step of drying before making the oil. You're still extracting the same amount of oil from the herb.

@DaMalat
@DaMalat 3 года назад
Very little which is why Rose Oil is one of the most expensive essential oils on the market. In a fairly basic set up like the one in the video, you will need 1kg of rose petals to make 2 - 3ml which is about 5,000 petals for 2 - 3ml of oil. With a professional set up, you could get 10ml of oil from the same amount of petals. Consider it click bait when you see a video claiming to be able to make Rose Oil from a homemade still.
