Dang, i can't believe this video is 7 yrs old already. Came up in my suggestions list lol. I used to watch these videos over and over dreaming of having a lathe. Lol got one and it lasted maybe 10-12 hrs and now it sits in the garage collecting dust and completely dead. Back to carpentry for me. 😢
sorry to hear that, what broke on it? Even a cheap one could last a life time.. I don't do too much with youtube anymore, they shadow ban me for the gun stuff..
@@bstanga I got a 1030v lathe. The first bolts that stripped were the t-slot bolts on the carriage (I think that's what it's called). So I paid a machine shop to make me higher grade bolts. After they were replaced I played with aluminum and rebar which was fine then a friend gave me something that looks like stainless steel. As soon as the tool touched that stuff it stripped the bolt holding down the tool post. And I mean it barely touched the steel. So I emailed the company and they sent me a replacement the next day... But our house was only ten years old so the post office at the time kept saying our address didn't exist so they delivered our mail normally to a house a few blocks away. Long story short I got the replacement bolt 3 months later. They actually sent me 2. I replaced the stripped bolt and exactly the same thing happened. The tool touched metal and stripped again. I looked at it and realized the bolt was barely caught by the nut. It only caught 1 1/2 to 2 threads so was pretty weak. Next issue was a friend of mine was working at a machine shop and said he could get someone to make me a better bolt so I gave him the top nut and last good bolt to try and see what he could do and he ended up moving away. So now I have a lathe with no bolt or nut for the qctp. I tried to turn the machine on a month or so ago when I was in the garage but even the electrical is dead now. I suspect it's a sensor in the chuck guard since I have it covered in plastic to keep it free from dust at least. I checked and the chuck guard over the years has dropped down and now rubs against the chuck. I'm guessing if I just raise it up that may fix the problem and get it running again just tired of always trying to fix it for the zero return on investment. For what that cost me my wife said no more money into it. So I'll eventually be forced to toss it or sell it for whatever I can get for it. But it was fun those few hours I did have it running. :)
I love your dog. My seven and a half year old black lab - Jake - just passed away (Pancreas cancer), and I just got myself a newly born yellow lab puppy - Dexter - but he could never replace Jake.
Man Dave, I am so sorry to hear that. A wise man once told me "Get another Dog, It will help you and the Dog" Zeke is getting past 10 yrs now I will hate to face that day. Good luck
we just made some k's for a customer. an ER40 collet chuck was invaluable for the .995 diameter Ks. these look a little bigger than ER 40 collets can hold. wish i would have seen this video b4 making them!
Another think i learned recently. Carbide is dull as hell compared to HSS. Learn to sharpen your own bits, and life becomes way easier! I still use carbide mostly though, cause my grinding skills suck. :( But I'm getting better!
Here in Canada, you just think about making something that has to do with firearms, the RCMP just knock at the door, never the less thinking about a silencer..... Not being a firearm fan myself it doesn't bother me but some people really take it at heart... ;)
+pierre beaudry I hope you had a good New Year, as for the silencer, I've paid the US gov $1200 fro the privilege to make six suppressors, Everything I do is on the up & up. Once you shoot without hearing protection its hard to go back to all that noise..
nothing wrong in makeing a K or M baffle. So why no dementions? I do enjoy watching your videos. Alot... I bet there is alot of machinist just just wanting to give it a shot.. keep the videos comming. TY
son your an accident waiting to happen. running the lathe with the loose fitting shirt is a pure no no. hands and fingers cant be replaced , just be carefull follow some rules , saftey is everybody's problem. Concerned old machinist.
+Aaron Garney Zeke is 9 yrs old, I let him off the run, but he ranges so far, and a neighbor said he killed his cat so,, it the cable run for old Zeke, Jeannie walks him a mile each day..
