This video show you how to make a kimono undergarment - a juban. This is version of a juban is super simple to sew and you can use any fabric you have at home. Since I made actually 2 juban - one for female kimono and one for male kimono, you can use this tutorial for all your juban needs.

Someone of you had noticed that I didn’t write the kanji for “hanjuban” in this video. Hanjuban is written “半襦袢” in Japanese. Anyway, everyone of you who can read what I wrote instead gets a 10/10!! 🎉✨

A lot of bigger anime conventions have vintage and historical second hand kimono sellers. I know one carries everything from wmn to woman kimono, Yucatan, cotton, silks, wools, hakama, various formalities of all fo them and obi. As well as the different ties and the obi pillow and fabric. There are so many.

I have re-watched this video so many times now! Since I am looking to use up some of my existing fabric stash before buying more, I have gotten back into making wafuku. There are lots of straight lines involved, which is easy for hand-sewing and machine. Since they aren't garments you can get so easily, I don't feel like spending 2 hours on wafuku is 'useless' like spending it on making, say, a dress that I could have bought at a thrift store for ~$4 USD and altered if I wanted to. Having videos on how to make all kinds of items, plus the history behind them (like when long juban sleeves became a fashion) is priceless!

My experience with just wearing haori, I really liked the miatsukuchi opening, nice ventilation. Im sad men's kimono don't have it.

Also my opinion on men’s and women’s kimono. Due to the missing ventilation, I find men’s kimono really uncomfortable 😅

I love your channel! It is so informative. Would you consider expanding the number of videos you have addressing hairstyles? I feel uncomfortable with my ability to judge what might be considered a formal versus semi-formal versus informal hairstyle and what might or might not be proper and when. A video or a series of videos showing different hairstyles and what occasions they would be considered appropriate would be so helpful. Hello, thank you for this video, it arrived almost in time to me :D I am making juban (and kimono and obi ) on my own, cause in Sklovakia it is the only option, how I can wear kimono and not to spend a lot of money for shipping... I said almost in time, because I have already cut out and sewn fabric for main peace and I am doing it exactly as kimono ( with okumi) following your kimono-doing and all measurements videos, but this is waaay easier and save me some fabric, so at least sleaves are gonna be the small ones :) And, this actual juban will not be the only, so I am happy to have future juban as It will be correctly done :)

I am making my first 和服 today, I bought a piece of cotton cambric, and I will be making a 長襦袢, so I can learn about more general processes, for future 着物 projects. I hope I can make a summer kimono and haori on the next months. Your channel is being a life saver マツナガ先生、本当にありがとうございます！

(and I bought on line two yakuta, one obi, and geta ans tabi, but, definitively, I dont look like a Japanese. I just have the feeling I'm an old French woman with Japanese outfits.... lol!

I love the idea of a nonbinary hanjuban! I think that's what I'm going to make...I might use dimensions to make it versatile (so I can add an erishin if I want to), but I like the versatility of it!

Hello, Missus Billy Matsunaga! I saw in one of your fabric shopping videos that you had picked up a buckle for hakama, and I’ve been looking for alternate forms of fastening one. I was wondering if you’ve done a video on this topic, or plan on doing so in the future? I really appreciate these videos! They’ve been a great inspiration for me to look for traditional Japanese clothing, as I currently only own a kendogi and matching hakama. Not even an obi! Though, I will be getting one soon. Thank you so much! This is such a fantastic video as always, Billy! I have a beautiful semi-transparent black kimono, and I'm not sure what kind of undergarments I should wear with it. Would it be better to make a juban or nagajuban? Should I make them in black or another colour? Super lost and would love anyone's help - I really want to wear this beautiful piece!!

Yes, but I don’t think the men’s hakama that I will sew will be one that’ll be wearable for aikido. There are many hakama versions even inside of female and male hakama.

Funny thing, Iv been hand stitching my clothing for years now. I find they hold up just as well in a modern washer. As the machine sewn garments. This may be because I’m using more traditional Victorian England sewing techniques. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Did anyone catch how far up to mark the hem line and how far in to sew the center back seam? Ive watch that part a couple times and i just cant find the measurement 😅

Hallo Billy, last night I finished my first Kimono/Yukata. It is just amazing!!! Now it is time for a new sewing Project. I definitly will sew a hanjuban, too. But out of curiosity, is the kind of construction the same, when sewing Jimbei or Samue? Simply said. Hanjuban with strings at the end of the collar and one pocket outside. The collar seems to be the same. Only the sleeves are slightly different?

I watch ur videos .I made sum kimono over the years not all perfect .hand sewn .I live in Ireland. I find the collar the hardest ..what I don't understand .how far up do I go with back seam .as I noticed .when people nip open top .for the collar .do u turn in the material.before u sew on collar .is the back seam .a false seam

Dear Matsunaga-san, Wow, I've watched all your videos and this is the one thing I was still looking for information on! Thank you!! Coincidentally, I'm interested in taking a class from you. However, I'm still gathering information on wasai, not necessarily kitsuke-- would you consider teaching a class about kimono construction? The collar and measurement-accuracy are especially intimidating. Thank you for spreading the love of kimono.

@@BillyMatsunaga I see! I didn't know that there was a national exam for wasai. It's very hard to find resources for kimono construction in English (probably for the reason you listed above) and I still have questions about several parts of the construction, including making sure that my measurements are accurate. I'm a bit wider in the middle which, while that's great for the shape of men's kimono, is confusing since my maehaba is significantly wider than my ushirohaba. Do you have any recommendations as to where I might seek answers to my questions?

Because of the obi sitting higher and being wider. And today the openings are used when dressing a female kimono 😊

This book doesn’t have a title since it’s not purchasable. Sorry 😅 I was handed it down from my sewing teacher. But to give you some relief: you’ll need advanced kimono sewing knowledge to find this book helpful.

But it seems the topic is too old fashioned evem for second hand stores 🤣 But on the other hand, I have no advanced kimono sewing knowledge (yet) - so there is still time to keep searching. Why are the side seams straight at the bottom part, and tilted outwards on the top part? How do I measure the angle and how long it goes for correctly?
