If you love the boho look and love retro then here's a wonderful macrame lampshade to bring a new light to your decor. I will walk you through each step.
Don't know how to do Macrame? Don't stress as I will show you how to do each knot in the beginning very slowly.
It's a step by step video so it is on the long side but this will help you to keep on track so you can finish and complete this project.

Supplies needed:
-second hand lamp shade dimensions: top ring 5.75" (14.6cm) across, bottom ring 13.75" (35mm) across. Depth 10" (25.4cm)
-250 yds (229M) of 3mm macrame cord twisted
-measuring tape
-scissors
-hair comb or pet slicker
-4.5 mm crochet hook

cool, I haven't made one in 30 yrs. made many a lamp shade and hanging table combos. your's is very pretty. One thing about macrame, is that you can wash them, those glued shades get dusty and dirty over time. with a macrame one you can dunk and clean them outside and even tint them to other colors later on if you change your decorating color schemes. Very detailed video. Now I really do want to find my books. there around here somewhere lol.

Hi Audrey! Thanks for the cleaning tips and changing the colour later. Well at least you keep your books. I did a big clean out a few years ago and got rid of my macrame books. Urg. This was before I started my channel. Wish I had of kept them now. It would have been fun to go through and see the projects that were in that old book.

Your channel is great. I don't even have any pictures of the things I've made. I snickered when I saw your blue and white wall hanging and the owl... yup made those too. I think that book had the pagoda in it. I still haven't found my books, they are around here somewhere in storage. I don't miss the arm pain from tying the long cords. Suggestion for a video or two : triple plant hanger, double hangers, and a few hanging tables.

It is quite time consuming, as you know, to do the macrame projects but I do find it meditative. I try to pace myself but then I always say “ Just 1 more section”. Lol. I have already posted a triple plant hanger and done a single plant hanger. I have the shelf hanger on the list of to dos. I have so many interests so try to vary what I do next. Hope you find your books!

I started working on the project. I am learning a few things. The use of macramé cord is most beneficial. It has a nice twist which shows off the knots, it is smooth and has a sheen. It is also the correct weight. I wanted to use what I have in my stash, a cotton blend rustic chainette yarn in Aran weight. This turns out to be too fine and I had to add twice as many cords to my frame. Also, it is rough. Smooth cord works better when pulling long lengths of cord through a knot. Also, you have to plan for adding length to the project. It also takes more rows when using a thinner cord. I will let you know how it goes.

Yes, you are correct with all of the above. I prefer the look of the macrame cord and the twisted macrame cord will make the beautiful fringe on the bottom. Hard to get that look with yarn.

Hi Patti, I’m so in love with your lampshade. It’s absolutely stunning. I’ve managed to get a bit larger lampshade on sale! At the check out it was $2 but, the tape on the ring was falling apart so I got it for $1. I wanted to know how you worked out how many cords you needed please. It’s it just trial and error? You can add as many cords as you want. My lampshade had the vertical metal supports so I just added enough cords to fill each section. If I remember correctly I used 10 cords for each section and when you make your first larks head knots then that will give you 20 strands for each section. Just keep it in multiples of 4. It doesn’t have to be the same amount as mine.

It’s just a personal preference. My preference is to just have the macrame cord showing and have the light shine through. If you want a more diffused look than leave the shade on.

Yes, that will work fine. 8 cords will give you 16 strands so you will still have groupings of 4 strands each.

You have 20 strands for each section. Each section is done the same. Try and watch the video again and hopefully it will make sense.

Hello, I loved the tutorial and decided to use your teaching for my very first project except my lamp shade frame, although identical is only a 1/4 the size. Haha. Top 8cm, Bottom 15cm, Length 13cm. I was able to do the calculations by your example. This total noobie needs your advice. Circumstances beyond my control, the only macromae cording I have available is 9mm wide but flat. 3 knots (6 cords) between the tines doesn't seem to work so, I put 4 (8 cords). It was going great until the second row. 😆 When I start the second row, do I still pull 2 to the side? That part of the knoting calculation for your design is where I need help. I'm making a lead crystal wind chime from an antique chandler. If I can figure out knoting. It will look amazing. Thanks

The lead crystal wind chime sounds beautiful! It’s great that you figured out that you need 4 (8) cords. In most macrame projects you always work in groupings of four. It would not have worked with 3 as you found out. The next row is starting alternating square knots. When alternating you always leave 2 cords out so the square knot is formed in the middle of the two squares directly above. This will also start to form a triangle as you leave out 2 cords on the sides for every row.

To be quite often I don’t think I have ever washed a lampshade of any kind. Hope that doesn’t sound bad on behalf. They don’t really get dirty but could collect dust so I would likely vacuum the macrame lampshade. If it gets dirty in an area for some reason than you could just spot clean it with a wet rag and a bit of dish soap.

Patti - I am working on a little different size lamp shade and stuck on where you have 16 cords and I have 24 cords. How do I make this part after the first alternating square knots then the V for the DHH and I am at the part where you go to the center of your (16) my 24 cords to do the 2 square knots. Help! I am not sure how to alter this and really would like to finish my piece. If you could direct me for just this portion that would get me on my way. Thank you, Tammy Kuck

Hi Tammy, Not to worry, it doesn’t have to be exactly like mine and it will still work out. Doing the two square knots just adds a bit more interest to the design but it isn’t necessary if it doesn’t work for your lamp. Just as long as you continue the alternating square knots to fill in the section and make a bit of a diamond shape so you can enclose it with the second row of double half hitches. Hope that helps.

That's really nice work, I'm thinking of doing it myself on an old lamp i have so i have a question if possible My lamp shade is smaller than yours The top circle is 3.75" and the bottom one is 9.75" , it's divided into 6 sections like yours I can't fit 10 pieces in each of them though, what's your advice on it? Drop it down by 2’s. So just use 8 or 6. Your triangles will not go down as far as mine but you can adjust it to work. Change up the pattern and repeat the first two sections if it is not long enough for you. Or spread out your knots wider or make them tighter to work in each section. Love your design! I have a shade that is the same size as yours, so this is very helpful for me to have your calculations as a reference. I'll be making two shades and my fringe will be a little shorter. I just want to be sure I'm adjusting my calculations correctly and that I have enough cord on hand to do both. I am a little confused, though - at the 4:15 mark when you're doing the math, you multiply by 5. Where is that number 5 coming from? Thank you for your great video and any clarity you can provide on the math!

Oh that’s great that you found the same frame! It’s just a rule to multiply by 5 so you have enough cord. Always works out for me. You can multiple by 4 but I would hate to not have enough cord and run out. Multiple by 6 if your doing a really large macrame with lots of knots and a thick cord.

10 cords fit nicely into one of my sections. I have 6 sections so that is 60 cords in total.

Hello. I have a lamp shade but its a bit bigger, top ring is is about 7'', bottom ring is 14'' and depth is 10''. How many rings would I need around the top please?? First time doing this lol

Depends on thickness of macrame cord you are using as well. Just think in groupings of four. So for each section around the top ring see how many groupings of 4 you can fit into one section than multiply that by how many sections around your top ring. By groupings of four, I mean 2 long strands folded in half to give you four working cords.

I think you are asking about starting the double half hitches that you do to frame in the triangles. if so, then you take a cord from the section to the right and use that for your base cord to start your double half hitches. Or if you are working on the left side of the triangle then you would take a cord from the next section on the left side for your base cord. Hope that is what you were needing clarification on.

@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts I am having the same issue my triangles with the double half hitches are all kinds of crooked and do not match up I wish you would have shown how to start and finish a middle section, now I will be undoing 3 sections that look awful idk I'm sorry Im just not doing something right grrrrr

Each section on my lamp I have added 10 cords which gives you 20 strands after your larks heads knots. When starting your double half hitches around the whole lamp you can count out your 20 strands. Now always take the next strand from the next section to use as your base cord and the same on the left side. It’s the same all the way around.

The lamp shade is just held on with the screw wooden knob at the top.

You should use the lightbulb that is recommended by your light fixture. Generally speaking that is usually a 60 watt bulb.
