This is so exciting. There's a good core of folks out there who have downsized their wargaming pretty literally. It's cheaper, easier to transport and quicker to play. Looking forward to making s board like this for 6mm gaming. :)
100% agree buddy. Been toying with this idea for Micro’munda in an 80’s briefcase and micro machines Gaslands Refuelled that rolls up into a Pringles tub made to look like a pipe bomb or something.
Micromunda would be awesome. Been thinking of building my own Necromunda town. And then thought. Where would it go? Where would it fit? 🤔 but a smaller scale means a larger town in a smaller space. Now imagine a ten mm game of warhammer 40k on a standard warhammer 40k gaming board. Its a bit like Epic 40k oh wait. Never mind. I really liked the case thing.
Totally agree. Being pushed for space, I have been using 10mm for most of my TTRPGs; miniatures, buildings, and other bits'n'bobs. I generally tend to have everything at 10mm and then print out larger-scale miniatures for players that want to have a more detailed representation of their character, which isn't used for play.
@@Ryotbhthat's why I'm here--I'm not into wargaming but rather a recent solo ttrpg enthusiast. I wanted to get a couple of characters for a campaign I'm starting on my own just for visual representation and had noooo clue these small scales existed. I guess I should've known, considering the variety of sizes in scale modeling in general.
Nice Build Bill. Fun Idea. I will need to make myself one for long road trips. Thanks for sharing. It was your birthday recently? Happy Birthday. Hope the family is well. I was concerned when I saw your "covid post" a while back. Glad you seem to be doing better.
Not gonna lie, watching you fiddle with the terrain combinations reminded me so strongly of various starcraft maps. The whack of nostalgia was strong. Not sure why, just something to do with the overhead view and the tiered appearance. This turned out rather lovely. Quite enjoyed the idea and am going to shamelessly 'acquire' the crustard 2.0 recipe.
Gotta make a StarCraft board with StarCraft 15mm minis to go with. There’s lots of “space marines” out there for the terrans, and I know I see a lot of straight up Zerg figures from time to time.
@@kelimar3014 Well tbf Warcraft was originally supposed to be Warhammer Fantasy, but GW wasn't interested. Then Blizz basically looked at 40k, and like most university students, copied it while changing it just enough to not be obvious plagiarism. Like Terran's are obviously Space Marines, Zerg are just Tyranids, and Protoss are basically Eldar.
*_The Backgammon checkers/draughts/stones/men/counters/pawns/discs/pips/chips or nips also make quite nice bases for 28/32mm minis and add som needed weight._*
I love the idea of having more portable TTRPG / Wargaming options! I think it’s Knarb that does a lot of smaller-scale tabletop stuff and I honestly adore it. Plus using the game board as your case *and* the board itself? How clever!
In terms of playing scale, one thing you can do is take a game with rules in inches and just measure in cm. So 6 inches becomes 6 cm That is a factor of 2.54 which is pretty close to 2.8 (ie 28mm divided by 10mm)
I love how easy he makes this look. I'm going to give it a shot but I feel quite certain that I'm going to end up with a horribly damaged backgammon board.
I'm working on it myself, but I was worried about that myself. Since my family likes playing backgammon, I'm making the wargame boards removable instead of permanent. I'm using chipboard, cut to fit, put magnetic sheets on it, and then topping it with cheap fabric I got from Hobby Lobby painted with coffee grounds mixed with water, and a ribbon to remove them from the case easier, all without damaging the case itself.
@@angrytheclown801 brilliant! I put a glossy coat on some sandpaper that I had colored to look textured. I like how it looks BUT it's too thick for the magnet sheet below :( so I'm starting over.
Ok, those toy guns as 10mm ruins is genius. Also, get yourself a bigger makeup brush for dry brushing if you dont have one already, will save you loads of time for large surface dry brushing!
@@kevinpatrickcarey3741 I believe there's machines that do that for filament (and with some knowhow you could probably make it yourself) but for resin you can't and shouldn't try as it's probably extremely toxic to do.
This is a great idea, with an even better execution. I can't help but imagine gaming shops having these for their free play section. Like a collection of different style maps. Each one would be in a different case, like a game-map encyclopedia set.
10:32 We use mod podge to seal foam because once cured it's non-water soluble. Even when dry, PVA can be reactivated by water (such as that present in acrylic paints) causing it to go all dodgy. *mod podgey = no dodgy*
So glad I found this. Brilliant idea! I just recently realised that I could print my D&D minis at a 10mm scale and save on time and resources, and still get a massive amount of models ready for use. I added magnets to all the models but was struggling with figuring out a handy board system. Never even considered a folding case. It's perfect! Thank you!!!!
I'd love to see additional case builds, perhaps something utilizing the center divider like a city wall or something similar so it sort of 'blends' in?
At 10mm scale you could probably just convert all distances from Inches to Centimeters and it would be close enough. Then you just need some small metric rulers and/or tiny metric tape measures.
Next time you should use air duct sheet metal for the bottom of the case to hold the terrain in place. It's light, not too expensive, and those neodymium magnets will grip tight and your terrain won't wiggle at all
Again, lot's of excellent tips and tricks! I haven't, uh, ever built anything... yet... though I've purchased a bunch of things (haha?). But, you know... Great stuff! I always enjoy your videos!
Idea for you. Next one you make.. put a raised railway along the join of the suitcase. Make ruined city scape each side of the railway. Or make a earth raised embankment with the rocks you have and do a American wild west railway with Indians bandits and cowboys.
My wife and I enjoy bringing a few fave small scale ‘board’ games when we travel. While we don’t usually play on the plane, they are great for layovers (when you don’t want to nod off or wander too far from your gate). They are small enough to share a table with some grub and wait out a rainy afternoon. We enjoy Biblios but smaller games could be deck based only or something like Hive. :)

I think everyone has a family recipe for crustard, the one my Nan passed down is acrylic paint, PVA and ready mixed filler. If you add water and dry it with a heat gun you can get a cool crackle effect. Awesome video again Bill, I'm watching while I make dinner because I'm a grown up, I'm making chicken nuggets because I'm a child.
My god, the figures are so tiny! Nice self-reference to Daniel Drybrush (an innovator and scoundrel all wrap into one). Whisper voice: "You're welcome." Thanks for the mention! : ) Normal voice: "Those mountains are so tiny!" The board came out cool! One day we shall play... you will have all of the cool figures and terrain (because I never build this stuff), but hopefully you will have an extra battle team for me, which will probably be composed on malcontents, complainers, and bums no doubt, but what should I expect...? I should've built my own team. Sigh. p.s. Nice camera move on the glamour shots (motorized slider?).
"a new ruler that is showing inches, but at a new scale, so it's basically an inch divided by 3", like the imperial system wasn't complex enough already. Good job Bill!
I've found the best cheap source of magnetic meterial is used cans (e.g. Baked beans) use tin opener to remove the top and the bottom, cut down one side (kitchen scissors works) then flatten into a sheet, make sure you trim any sharp pointy bits off as the edge can be sharp. But it makes a great thin sheet of metal (with pre-built in ribbed texture) that works well with neo magnets.
The most expensive dice are made for casinos for obvious reasons. The second most expensive (often previously used casino dice) are for backgammon tournaments. Some of us still play for money.
I tried to do something similar, but I dunno if it was my magnetic sheets or if my mini magnets were to small or both but it didn’t really work out. The magnets I have stick so much more to sheet metal so I think I’ll try that next but I want to be able to texture or cover whatever I’m using so it’s not just out in the open. Glad it worked out for you, Bill. We’ll see what happens for me haha.
As someone whose also encountered this I get the strong sense that doing industrial boards is the way to go. That way you can put some cut sheets of paper on the base metal sheet and then paint it all up like sheet metal for a ship’s deck or concrete. That way you get the look of terrain without much in the way of material between the mini and the board. Ditto for buildings with playable tops or upper levels. Just put more metal sheeting as the base level of the roofs etc.
I was just in the process of making a briefcase blood bowl pitch. Not the first time Bill has made an extremely timely video, i'm starting to think he's a precog or something.
Bill, I would be happy to send you Final Faction action figures for future builds and crafts. Let me know the best way to do this and we can make it happen.
Definitely not a new concept, but amazing outcome. 3 years ago I saw this one guy do one for D&D but it was not in a backgammon case. I think it was some sort of puzzle case. It inspired me to do a 5x6inch case similar to this. I like the magnets though, I used transparency paper. I like the area for pieces. Makes me want to revisit and try making it bigger and better.
That was an awesome build! the case and terrain turned out great. And I use a lot of the Final Faction toys in my personal builds. Even grabbed some of the actual action figures and repainted them and modded them a bit to use as monsters and big ass robots in some of our Stargrave and This Is Not A Test games.
Hey Bill, I recently had to take apart an old fan because it broke and it was easier to throw away disassembled but I noticed there were some interesting pieces that could be used for scratchbuilding. Thought if you ever wanted some different pieces, maybe check out some crappy fans that don't work well anymore.
Magnetic strips are usually really bad at holding magnets. did they cause you issues after painting over them? I feel like once you cover them they lose most of their magnetic strength.
Awesome build Bill :) I've had a large canteen of cutlery box (approximately 24" x 18" when open) I've been saving for a similar idea for Necromunda/Stargrave.
I just discovered your channel and I'm already loving it. I'm not sure that I will make magnetized terrain but the cliff face technique is lovely. Thank you!
Used to have a travel version of connect four that we would play in the backseat of the car and the pieces were lost to the void very quickly. I would be very interested to see how you would fare with this one on the road! This is incredibly cool, I am never not impressed by the stuff you come up with~
Yep I'm illegally watching 🤣🤣🤣 New here. Until today, I didn't even know you existed, but, enjoyed everything. I'll look around a bit 🤔👀, see what I think. Alright. Found an email address 🤨😁😁😁ooooo. Subbed. 😁😁😁👍🤣🤣🤣
This could apply to virtually any board game - reducing it down to scale or removing some elements to fit inside the travel box. Thinking this might be a way for crafting a mini osrt of travel version of a pirate game called "Plunder", that my son and I enjoy playing. Thanks Bill for a cool idea and keep up the good work!
BILL! If you're looking for Final Faction figures yet, let me know (and how many). I have 4 Dollar Trees within 10 minutes of me and would be happy to pick them up. Keep up the great work, and thank you!
That is quite ingenious Bill , ld like to see tge shrink Raygun 🔫 you used to produce you used to make that game ..... fascinating . Hope you had a great birthday.... which reminds me it's my daughters on fathers day ..... l don't think my daughter should be allowed on fathers day , this is atrocious !!.....
I loved this episode!! And your board and terrain pieces came out amazing! Going to give a crack if and hopefully give it to a friend for his birthday.
Has any kid actually played with Final Faction toys, or are they all destined for crafters and hobbyists to dismantle and warp? The accompanying cartoon and comic aren't GOOD by any means, but they aren't the worst that I've seen
Bill you probably won't believe it, youtube sent me a notification that you posted a video. Normally they only send me a notification after I have already finished watching. Crazy times we live in. Cheers.
I know this a year old but another Idea is a wallpaper pasting board. Alter the hinges to the other sides to create a square instead of looooooong shape & remove the legs altogether 👀 creating, roughly a 3 x 3 playing area. You would be able to use both inside & outside if done correctly & you can store certain types of scenery/miniatures etc inside for transportation as it also comes with a carrying handle. Forgot to say Get the Flock outa here 😂
I know you said we should say if we like or dislike your drybrushing… but is there anyway we can get more drybrush? I’d watch that all day long. 24hr drybrush marathon!
This is a great idea! I would probably use some galvanized sheet metal (since everything else has a magnetic base) and have street or city on the other side. But I really do like your idea. John S.
