How to Make a Magnetic QiYi Warrior W Speed Cube (Works for Many Other Rubik's Cubes Too!)

4/5/17 - UPDATE: I just finished this cube by removing the magnets and replacing them with grade, N48. These are much better than the previous ones I had in it (N35). I found that the glue I used in this video, the new clear formula of regular Gorilla glue (it's not a superglue) doesn't hold the magnets permanently. So, removing the N35s was actually quite easy. And the subsequent removal of the glue from the magnets was easy once I soaked them in rubbing alcohol for about five minutes. Then, the glue came right off the magnets. So, while the glue I used here really isn't good for a permanent adhesive, I think it's going to be great when I prototype cubes when there's a chance I may need to remove the magnets and try different ones. So my final findings are the N48 works great (the N35 was really too weak) and the glue you see me using in this video is really only best if you don't need a permanent bond.
-----
Hey guys! This magnetic tutorial was requested by several of my subscribers, so here it is!!!
I recently received, as a gift from Lauren Rubik ( / @faithv5158 ), a really nice QiYi Warrior W speedcube. Thank you so much, Lauren! And since I've received several requests for magnetizing a Warrior W, here it is!!!!
You'll see that a lot of the techniques and procedures used in this video can be applied to a variety of other Rubik's cubes, so feel free to try this on other cubes! The position of your magnets will be determined by the interior design of the cubie pieces. Some cubes allow for an easily accessible location to place the magnets. Others, don't. And sometimes we'll place the magnets on the opposite side from what you see presented here in this video. Again, the location of the magnet is determined by the cubie piece's interior design, for the most part. Also, you can alter or vary the placement of the magnet, changing its relationship to the center of the cube. A magnet placed closer, toward the core, will result in a lighter magnetic feel. I personally tend to place my magnets as far out from the core as possible to maximize the magnetic effect.
You'll see that in this video I tried the N35 4mm x 2mm magnet. Prototyping a new cube can be a hit or miss thing sometimes. I found that the N35 is just too weak for this cube, even it being a stickerless cube. So really, you'll want to use a stronger magnet, like the N48 4x2 up to the N50 or even N52 4x2, depending on your personal preference.
OK, I think that covers everything. If you have any questions or comments, please let me know. I try as best I can to reply to everyone. In the event I don't, it's usually because RU-vid has failed to notify me of a comment left.
Hope you guys like this and that it's a help. Take it easy and I'll see you in the next video! Happy Cubing!!! Dave

I converted a Warrior (original version) to magnetic with 4mm x 2mm N50 magnets and it is now way more stable and controllable than it was before. It is almost as nice to solve on as my AoLong V2. Due to the success of this conversion, I have bought a Gan356 Air Master and a load of 4mm x 2mm N35 magnets. Just waiting on the shipment from China. Cheers DM cubing for your very helpful videos.

Craig Smith Hey, that is awesome!!! So glad to hear this!!!! The Warrior is really nice when magnetized!!! Oh, you'll love the magnetic Air. You can customize the magnetic pullforce strength by the location of the magnets, their distance from the center of the cube. The Air really only needs a light magnet, so with it, it's helpful to place the magnets somewhat lower in the cubie pieces. Good luck and let me know how it goes!!!

I will probably put the magnets in the same positions you did in your tutorial on the Gans Air. Hopefully soon I will be sub 1 minute consistently. I guess starting cubing at 38 years old is a bit late, but it's a fairly cheap hobby to do over the winter months.

I've got 2 look OLL sorted, yellow cross then 7 algs for that. I also know PLL algs for Ua, Ub, Aa, H, E, Z, so can solve that in 2 looks too. it's my cross and F2L that are pretty slow. It's getting better, I guess I need to keep practicing.

Just keep doing what you're doing and you'll get noticed. I never really wanted to start a cubing channel. I already have so many interests as it is. But after leaving comments on a couple of rather high profile youtube cuber's videos that they should consider doing a magnetic tutorial, and having my comments completely ignored by them, once I made my first magnetic cube, I figured I'd upload the video. Everything else just kind of happened. So it's cool knowing that I uploaded the first magnetic tutorial on RU-vid!. But once your channel starts growing, you constantly get email, messages, and comments, and it can be a little time consuming, because I always try to answer everyone who leaves a comment or has a question. I do this, because I know how it is to be completely ignored! I also reach out to smaller channels and help to promote them because I think it helps the community grow in a healthy way. There is enough elitism going on with the top cubing channels as it is.

Thanks for the video, I used it to help me magnetise my first cube (Warrior W) although I used N52's and feel they are a little too strong. If I were to do it again, (I might do it with my Valk) I'd probably use N42's.
@dmcubing6342

Stephen Perkins N42 probably would work well. I've used both N35 (a little too weak) and N48. So N42 being right inbetween these will do well.

I just put 4 in each cap north facing outwards. Then I would match up an edge to the centre and chuck a magnet in. It will automatically get its polarity correct. Glue it in and your done. Corners are unnecessary because the edges do all the work. Middle slices are REALLY good so roux solvers take note. Make sure you use a very fast curing glue.

Hey man, do you think it would be possible to compile a list of all of the different types of magnets you recommend for different cubes? I've seen you recommend magnets for specific cubes in comment sections, but sometimes it's hard to find those comments again. I'd just like to know which magnets are recommended for which cubes.
@dmcubing6342
@dmcubing6342 7 лет назад
Thank you! Excellent suggestion, and YES I am planning on doing this. Actually I had a video ready to go then out from nowhere, Shawn at speedcubereview posted a video about magnets and so as not compete with his, I've held off on doing mine. But the good thing is since then, I found a place for two very special magnets (the N38 and N42 - www.gaussboys.com ) and I'm also waiting to see a couple of prospects from Australia! So I think fairly soon I'll have a video up that shows which magnet tends to work best in which cube, how to handle magnets (magnet safety), some background on neodymium, and finally sources where to get them. That will all be in one video. Sorry it's taking so long for me to get to it. I think if I ever get my magnets from Australia (some N40s and N45s) and have time to check them out, then I'll finally be in a position to finalize the video. Please stay tuned!

Rushil Kasetty just to update you, yes I still plan on doing a magnetic resource video. It seems every time I do a cube, I realize once again that the magnets of one manufacturer and seller is different then the same magnet from another seller manufacturer. it's like there's a lot of variation between magnets out there. So yes, it's an excellent idea of yours to have a video that shows which magnet works best in which cube and where to get these magnets.

I think for budget cubes, the MF3RS is better and its performance is on par with cubes costing four times as much!

Which one is better to magnetize, this or mf3rs? Can I use 3x3m magnets? 35N or 42N for a Gan Air?
@dmcubing6342
@dmcubing6342 7 лет назад
I think I may like the mf3rs over the W, but it comes down to personal preference. I believe you could use a 3x3 magnet. I checked it out using an online magnetic calculator at K&J Magnetics and you should be ok. In the MF3RS, the N42 3x3 should give it a light, subtle magnetic feel. In the Gan Air, the same magnet would work well too! Or if you like an even more subtle feel in the Gan, the N35 3x3.

@dmcubing6342
@dmcubing6342 7 лет назад
I'm sorry that I am just now seeing your question. RU-vid never notified me. You'll be better off using the N35 4mm x 2mm. It is perfect for the Valk in both stickerless and black versions. The N48 3x1.5 would have one third less magnetic pullforce and would probably prove to be too weak in this cube.

I don't know if anybody still cares about this cube, but I once again went ahead and magnetized it with my remaining N42 5x1 magnets. This thing turned out amazing! The measurements are 1.10 mm for the edge and 1.19 mm for the corner (strange to see the corner actually being thicker). It's got a nice, smooth tug to it, with it being a bit weaker than the same magnets in the Yuxin Little Magic, but not clicky to be disruptive. It's very stable and clean, and I think it'll be my backup main!
@lock_
@lock_ 6 лет назад
Thanks for your tutorial, it was very useful. I've just glued N52 magnets but they seem too weak. Maybe it's because I only found with a diameter of only 3,5mm (but I didn't find bigger ones).
@dmcubing6342
@dmcubing6342 6 лет назад
Lock _ Sorry to hear your magnets turned out to be on the weaker side. Size is very important. I recommend 4x2 in this cube. It's possible though that you may still get some benefit out of the weaker magnets. I find it's often better to have lighter magnets in a cube than to end up with magnets that are too strong. Overly strong magnets can make some cubes almost unusable, whereas you can always solve on a cube with subtle magnets.
@lock_

Just magnetized my Warrior W with N50 4x2mm magnets. The magnets feel very weak compared to my Gans Air with N35 4x2mm magnets in it. This may be due to the magnets I used in this cube coming from AliExpress and only being 1.7mm thick instead of 2mm. The magnets I used in my Gans were from OmoMagnets which I highly recommend. Anyway, the cube is amazing for the price and even better with magnets in it.
@dmcubing6342
@dmcubing6342 6 лет назад
Interesting. Then your magnets from AliExpress are like the magnets I get from magnets365.com they measure 1.7 as well. Even though that's a small difference, it is noticeable. And I've found that a lot of "n50" magnets, particularly the budget priced ones, are actually weaker than N50. A "real" N50 should be quite adequate for the Warrior W. I placed two separate orders from AliExpress back in February, about $40 total. I never received them!
@portreathbeach
@portreathbeach 6 лет назад
Just magnetized a second Warrior W. This time with N50 4x2mm magnets from Omo. They are 2mm thick and not 1.7mm There is a lot more magnetic feel with these, feels more than the 15% stronger that the 0.3mm extra should give. But still no where near as much as a Gans356 Air with N35 4x2mm. Still waiting on my Valk3 from China!!!
@geraintjones6401
@geraintjones6401 6 лет назад
With this in mind, I used the stronger N52 "budget/slim" magnets when I magnetised my Warrior W earlier today. They are probably around the same pull as "real" N45-48 and feel great in the puzzle. Thanks for the guide and info.

Hey would it be good if i use n50 magnets or would it be to strong
@dmcubing6342
@dmcubing6342 4 года назад
Yes, I think they'll work just fine. But sometimes with N50 grade magnets, if they're priced real cheap, they're often fake N50 and actually N35 in strength. And sometimes it's not possible to know what you have until you use them in a cube. Either way, if they're real, they're not going to be overly strong in this cube, and if they're the weaker "fake" N50, they'll end up being like N35 and they'll have a somewhat subtle feel in this cube.

David Fischer If it's superglue, you could try putting a drop of acetone (fingernail polish remover) at the base of the magnet to help loosen it, but it can kind of melt the plastic if left too long. Usually just prying them out with a flat screwdriver works.

@dmcubing6342
@dmcubing6342 6 лет назад
TechTalksWithDylan Not a problem at all. Yes, each corner breaks down into three pieces and each piece needs a magnet. And the edges break down into two pieces and we place a magnet into each of them. This is because the corners have three surfaces that align to the two surfaces of the edge pieces.

What about N42 4x1 for this cube and the Gan 356 RS?
@dmcubing6342
@dmcubing6342 3 года назад
4x1 magnets are generally too weak for 3x3 cubes unless you double them by stacking one on top of the other. For the W, you could use N42 4x1 by stacking (doubling) the magnets and probably end up with a nice feeling cube. In the Gan, I’d recommend using single 4x1 magnets in the edge pieces and double stacks in the corners. The result would be similar to that of using N42 4x1.5 magnets throughout.

Ram The Cuber I actually think a higher grade 4x2 is the way to go with this cube. I initially used an N35 4x2 and found it to be a little weak in this cube. N48 or higher 4x2 is what I'd use for this cube. Of course magnets vary from one manufacturer to another, and people have different preferences, but that's what I found with this cube. I don't think I'd ever use a 4x1.5 because those would likely be too light.

Hi. Thanks for the tutorial. I have a qiyi warrior S and am thinking of magnetising it with 5x1.5mm N38. I also have 3x2mm N38 which I could double stack. Would appreciate your opinion on whether these options will work?
@dmcubing6342
@dmcubing6342 3 года назад
I think either option would work. Doubling the 3x2s might be a little too strong, but you could always double only half the magnets, for instance, the edge piece magnets. If then you find that configuration too weak, you could add a magnet to each corner piece magnet. I happen to really like 5mm wide magnets (the 5x1) because the slightly wider magnet helps soften the bumps you feel when solving when the magnets pass each other. What I’m not so sure about since I haven’t tried them is 5x1.5 magnets. Perhaps N38 wouldn’t be overly strong, I just don’t know. With the Warrior S being as cheap as it is, I guess you could try both. Having said that, I think the 3x2s may give you more options. However if the N38 5x1.5 aren’t overly strong, that cube might have a better feel.

What's the difference between the "'n" numbers
@dmcubing6342
@dmcubing6342 5 лет назад
N is used to identify and grade Neodymium magnets by their strength. The lowest N number you'll usually come across is N35. The highest, and strongest is N52. So, N35 is weaker than N52. The higher the grade magnets generally cost more. There are some unscrupulous sellers that sell "N50" magnets at really cheap prices, like the same prices as N35. Usually these are fake N50s where they're actually passing off N35 as N50. If you're buying from a reputable magnet company, you'll usually have to pay a little more for higher grade magnets. If ordering overseas, I'd recommend Omo Magnets for higher grade magnets. If all you need is N35, then you are fairly safe buying from just about anyone.

Normally I’d say anything slightly stronger than N35 4x2 will work perfectly in the Warrior W, but with “N50” magnets you have to keep in mind that if they’re budget priced, cheap N50 magnets, they’re magnetic strength is probably going to be closer to that of N35 magnets. Nothing particularly wrong with that if you’re needing an N35 strength. In this cube, N35 will give a lighter feel. I personally prefer an N48 4x2 in this cube.

@dmcubing6342
@dmcubing6342 7 лет назад
That's going to be on the strongest end of magnetic strength for the 4x2 magnet, so it will give the cube a somewhat pronounced magnetic feel. It may feel more bumpy than other magnets. If you're an aggressive solver, or you like to feel the magnets, you'll probably be ok. If, on the other hand, you're looking for a subtle magnetic feel, the N52 is going to be too strong.

As long as you're using a normal type superglue and not a gel, you should probably be ok. The thin glue will work its way under the magnet. I use thicker glues, so I always put the glue first, then magnets, but other people place the magnet first. Just be careful, because with thinner type superglues, it's easy to have runs and have it go where it shouldn't.
