For a long time now, I have been struggling to find a good power source for my portable electronic projects. Most of the solutions out there always had some limitation that affected the project I was trying to make. Therefore, I went out on a hunt for the perfect portable battery solution for my projects that could solve all the short coming of all the other options.
Why not use power tool batteries? I asked myself. If you come to think of it, they are not only compact and light, but they also have excellent power characteristics. Power tool batteries are inherently capable of high discharge rates, most of them have relatively large capacities as well as having built in protection circuits such as over discharge, over current, and over charge (check for each respective brand). Not to mention their convenience being that they are relatively inexpensive and plentiful. In addition to having an existing ecosystem of fast chargers (some charge 5ah of capacity within 30min). Oh, and they can be hot swapped and even wired in parallel for more power. What is not to like?
In conjunction with a simple step up/step down circuit their good for all types of projects from those that require a lot of power to those that only need a little bit.
This is why I went searching online for how I could integrate these batteries in a simple yet effective way into my projects and soon came across the brilliant idea of a 3d printed terminal (links to which can be found here in the description of the video)
There was one issue however the instructions for making, mounting, and wiring such a terminal where brief and almost non-existent. Therefore, I decided to make this video to make it easier for others to make their own battery terminal for their own electronics projects. This idea can be transferred to any other brand batteries just search for the corresponding terminal online. (Thingiverse is a good source for these designs)

In relation to the safety note at the end of the video i have done some more research and found out that : "batteries marked with a * (star) or yellow marking have over-heating and over-discharge protection. The non-star ones do not" Meaning that using the newer style makita batteries in your projects should be safe even without an overdischarge circuit in place. Good news for us makers.

Great work! I am looking at a way for connecting a bunch, say 4 Makita batteries together, using terminals like you have done here, But then I want to convert the power to 12v so I can use my spare batteries as 12v power when camping etc, to power my 12v fridge, or other 12 accessories like lighting, camp oven And maybe even as a backup Jump Starter... Would you have any insight into this?

Wouldn’t be able to comment on how well this would work but seaming as you will be converting down to 12v a parallel battery configuration would be best as this would allow you to quadruple your battery capacity without increasing voltage. Then a simple two winding transformer 18-12v could be used step down the voltage I would recommend this method as transformers can generally handle more load than their electronic step-down converter equivalents. I do not see an issue why this wouldn’t work except for the fact that that the batteries may drain unevenly. There is no real way to tell for me if this will work except to try it and see if it works. Hope this helps

Transformers don't work at all with DC voltages. You will need a boost (increase) or buck (decrease) converter to convert the voltage. Buck/boost converters are not cheap and can't handle a lot of power (current). You may need a separate converter for each of your appliances. When you consider all these problems, it might be better to just stick with a 12V lead-acid car battery.

How do you figure out the pin out of the terminal? I kinda wanna figure out how my roomba i8 works and redo the battery bms... But don't know what the pins connect to... Since they're all internal and the charger is only 2... Cool vid.
