How to make rockets that shoot over 40 feet, with aluminum foil and a match.
Some quick links to a few of the materials I used:

Because of the popularity of this project, I've put together a detailed 28 page PDF (bit.ly/MatchboxRocketsPDF) with step-by-step instructions, Fun Facts, Helpful Hints, and loaded with pictures. WARNING:
Although these rockets are only fueled by one match head, they do get hot enough to burn fingers, and leave scorch marks in carpets. This project should not be attempted without adult supervision, and if done indoors, safety precautions should be in place to mitigate any fire hazards. Misuse, or careless use, may result in property damage. Use of this video content is at your own risk.

Project Inspired By:
A video by Marek Hayward I saw over a year ago. (bit.ly/IBMatchRocketLaunchPad) If you check out the link, please share the love and let Marek know that Grant Thompson sent you. :) Thank you!
Project History & More Info:
After seeing the video by Marek Hayward (which had 10,000 views at the time, and is now over 1,000,000!) I dropped everything I was doing to try this experiment.
Unfortunately I couldn’t get much success with it. The rockets only seemed to work about half the time, and the needle they were launching from would get coated in carbon and tar residues after only a couple of launches, which seriously affected the performance.
In addition, the rockets weren’t balanced, so once they fired, they wouldn’t shoot very straight.
It’s taken me over a year of prototyping and testing, and playing with different ideas to get the result you see in this video. I developed the idea into a full-on matchbox rocket launching kit, which I’m super proud of, and excited to share in the project video.
These rockets shoot consistently between 20-40 feet, and one of the biggest factors to whether the rockets work or fail, depends on how tight the crimp is on the rockets nose. Any rocket that has failed on me has almost always been because the crimp wasn’t done right, or wasn’t tight enough.
The rockets will propel the furthest if they're launched from a stable base that has little to no give. If there is any give on the launchpad, that will absorb some of the energy and the rocket won’t go as far.
Multiple tests in my house confirmed that if the rockets land on the carpet, they need to be moved within 1-2 seconds, or they will begin to melt into the fabric. The aluminum casings are heated in a flame until they reach the auto-ignition temperature of the match head, so you can expect them to be very hot, and may want to be wearing gloves when you recover the spent rocket casings as well :)
This is an awesome and exciting project whether you're a kid or and adult. It’s impressive to fire a rocket with one match head and see such power, and the smoke trail it leaves in it’s wake is extremely satisfying as well.
I’m giving away the template I made for free, all I ask in return is that you please share this video :) You can get it here:

When we were young in the Von Braun days of kid rockets, we would fill aluminum cigar tubes with match heads, bend the end to form a nozzle. Our gantry was a 3 hole brick supported at each end by other bricks leaving an open space below for lighter fluid impregnated straw. A remote train transformer located in our launch center bunker would be wired to a nichrome wire in the straw. Powered up the wire would ignite the straw and the match heads. Flights 100 to 200 feet were possible depending on the wind. Caution: nozzle opening can’t be too narrow. And don’t use powdered match heads, both can result in “exploded on takeoff”.

Same here all the kids in USSR did that. Funny times. What about gunpowder or matches Sulphur trapped between 2 bolts connected by 1 nut? You screw the bolts inside the nut to push the sylphur or gunpowder against opposite bolt after that we would throw them on the pavement or from a top floors and as soon as it would hit the ground it would make a nice kaboom.

I made those 35-40 years ago, that was one of our most fun. We also made small cannons. We used thinner copper cartridges for ballpoint pens because large Parker types can hardly be filled with phosphorus and are more dangerous due to higher pressures. Fill one empty cartridge with phosphorus from 7-8 matches, seal it with the small ball from aluminium paper or a piece of wood, heat it and enjoy. Warning: We heated them while holding them in our hands and one exploded and metal shrapnel from the cartridge got stuck in my friend's cheek one inch below the eye.

A needle alongside the match while wrapping the match and then removed before applying flame. Used to shoot them off in my room. Didn't need a matchbox to set them up to launch, just leaned them against something. It was the early days of match rocket technology

We'd put a small piece of aluminum foil over the match head and twisted it around the match just below the head, we'd wedge the match between a gap in some wood or brick, the only difference to your rockets is the match stayed where it was and the foil took off when lit

Interesting. This is a far more sophisticated version of what I did as a kid, and with matches still attached to the stick. Instead of the kitchen aluminum foil, we would take the foil from chewing gum. Modern gum isn't usually wrapped this way, but back in the day, the wrapping was like a thin waxed paper with an even thinner foil. You could separate the two with a little effort and the foil you got was super-thin. I don't know where you could get foil that thin otherwise. We lay a sewing needle on the match which would be our rocket and wrapped the foil around it several times. Pulling the needle out left the exhaust path for the rocket from the match head to the tail end. Bend a paper clip for a launcher and you're ready. The foil was so light, you could make it work with any match from the kind in the video to even little paper ones from a matchbook. Thanks OP. Those in the video are more powerful, directional, and cooler looking. I kind of wish I'd had the plans a long time ago. But I had a lot of fun with the simpler method.

Great video. To get about 10 more feet in distance, try inserting a pin next to the match when you're rolling the foil tightly around it. Remove the pin after rolling. You now have created a tiny exhaust port which allows the gases to escape more forcefully than before. Try it.

I used to make these a lot when I was younger.Put the pin next to the match but leave a little bit of the pin sticking out so you can grab it after rolling the foil tightly. The pin should slide out easily. A tiny exhaust port is a must if you want good distance.Have fun.

On a larger scale, the armrest from an aluminum lawn chair ( the kind that has a rounded end) and using the “ light bulb filament taped between a pair of wires” ignition together with an official countdown from behind a bunker-tree, produced a wonderment of light, smoke and sound as the match heads ignited simultaneously, much like a solid fuel rocket with a large crack in the propellant. My friend and I scanned the sky, exchanging “Did you see it’s?” Until we noticed the crater and the bits of mangled aluminum around the launch pad. My friend said “let’s go saw the other armrest off my moms lawn chair”!
