In this video I show you how to make a medieval belt pouch, specifically a 14th Century style Kidney Pouch. This pouch is unique in that it also contains 2 drawstring pouches mounted to the main body of the pouch. I also provide you with the option to pick up the pattern and artwork from my Etsy shop or as a Patreon subscriber.

What about a stylish glove? idk if it was a thing or if you want to do a historically precise piece... but I think that can maybe fit some noble/ranger fantasy costume! :)

This isn't so much 14th century, but a scabbard for a curved sword /cutlass... I have a blade that is broad at the end and narrow towards the hilt... Just a decorative sword but still would like to make my own scabbard... Just a polite request... Sláinte

When I was doing SCA and made this type of pouch I used goatskin for the pouchlets. It didn't stretch quite as much as deer does.

Amazing video! I've made my first kidney pouch with this pattern, it was really easy and fun! // and my first leather carving // and It's beautiful ))) I chose mahogany dye for the background and left the carving undyed (it became ginger under finishing coat). I used applying technique from another your video to get slightly irregular colouring - and found this "old-looking" style really gorgeous =)

Like the pouch! You could add a thin strip of cowhide at the mouth of the pockets. Would stiffen it up a bit for your lace and you could incorporate your tab into that. Might look nice too. Would mean more sewing of course.

Oh, that looks SO simple to do! I'd stab myself, repeatedly, trying to sew, sew the wrong holes together, cut the lacing too short, spill dye everywhere and end up trashing the whole thing. But that's just me. :-)

It’s beautiful leather. Good use of Running Stitch and then reverse. If wear, heavens forbid, weakens a stitch, the Running Stitch has the stitches going the full run, from a different next stitch or the run. Clever.

Hey bud, I got a tip for ya. At the end where you did not pre punch the holes, I have encountered that situation before, my solution? I made a needle for my pen vice, and just use that when I'm in a pickle, the first one I made from high tensile, high ductile steel wire about 1/8" thick, chucked up in a drill and sharpened with a dremel, both at high speed to keep it concentric , and attempting to maintain a gradual taper.... This one folded under pressure so I swung at it again. The second one I made from 3/32nd Stainless , manufactured with similar geometry. the added strength of the stainless has proven bulletproof!!! I could probably pierce the sheet-metal on a vehicle with no concern. The pen vice I have is from Lukfin very similar to Starrett #166C

Oh wow love your work! I could totally get down with doing this, I have done some wood burning, instead of punching the holes is it ever done burning holes instead, with a wood burning tool or soldering iron? And burning the edges as well instead of belvelling the edges? Perhaps instead of cutting the pieces out... Are designs ever burnt in, in this craft? I really like the gold plated effect, I could see that a burgundy, green or blue stain pattern would also be nice.

If at the middle of the small front pouches, put two beads on the draw string and back through the second and continue to weave to the end and fasten off with enough opening to the pouch so things don’t fall out. Then, pull the second bead to tighten the pouch and not from the back of the pouch. It’s to create that easy front draw and secure, by adding two beads when you’ve threaded half way. I hope it helps.

Would eye rivets help keep the softer leather from stretching out? I get it's hidden most of the time but for longevity would that help? *I get that that's not authentic but if your putting in the work you'll want it to last right😊

I really like the look of this pouch. I am wanting to make this for my SCA persona. I have cut out my pattern pieces and will be cutting the leather sometime soon. Where did you find the buckle you used in the video? I didn't see it listed on your Amazon page. May have to look for something to replace the Heavy Braided Sinew from Tandy since they have it on Closeout now.
@DarkHorseWorkshop
@DarkHorseWorkshop 5 лет назад
Shouldn't be the braided sinew, that's a different thing. As for the buckle I can't remember where I got it specifically but for stuff like that you may want to investigate either Raymonds Quiet Press, or Bronzehammer. Bronzehammer is higher quality stuff, but Raymonds has a ton of fittings.
@DarkHorseWorkshop
@DarkHorseWorkshop 5 лет назад
Do I have the braided sinew listed? I'll have to check. There's some chocolate brown braided sinew that's not useful for this. It's more the round artificial natural colored sinew (tan/beige)
@Robert15343
@Robert15343 5 лет назад
@@DarkHorseWorkshop I think I figured it out looking through Tandy's webpage. Your Amazon parts list (making of my Kidney Pouch, Viking Belt Pouch, and my phone case videos) shows a link to [Tandy Leather Heavy Braided Sinew Natural 20 yd (18.3 m) 1315-00] but I think you were meaning [Tandy Leather Artificial Sinew Natural 270 yds (246.8 m) 11208-00] which is the round sinew version. Was looking through making up my shopping list for this weekend.

What is Vegatan?
@grahamrichards193
@grahamrichards193 4 года назад
Veg tan is a naturally tanned leather using only bark and other vegetation. It’s a stiffer leather than chrome tanned and can be carved, tooled and dyed to whatever colour you choose. It can also be wet-formed which involves soaking the leather, then shaping it round a wooden mould. When it dries it retains the shape and feels really solid. It normally comes flesh coloured, although you can buy it dyed through.
