Beautiful! 🤩 I love love love your eye for patchwork colour/pattern combos 💕 Tip for people with overlockers, you can use them to gather! 😃 Instead of sewing two parallel lines on your regular machine, an overlocker does two lines of stitching at once (plus the looping thread). Pull on those two lines of stitching to start gathering 🤩 (you can also change the differential feed setting to make it start gathering the fabric while you sew) 🥰

Have you ever tried using a bias tape folder? Clover makes them for various widths. I resisted buying one for many years because I thought it was so easy to just fold the bias binding manually.. BUT the folder is amazing and so fun and easy to use. I recommend! I’m working on a moto jacket pattern this week to eventually make out of leather (😱) but I’m starting with a cotton prototype to practice.

I tried my hand at making this dress and thanks to your awesome video I was pretty happy with how it turned out! Was impressed with your work before but now, after trying it myself, I am so in awe of you! Do you have any tips for attaching the second tier when there's such a wide amount of fabric to match up? That was definitely the step that I struggled with the most! 💕💕💕
@fromcarlyb

Ah I'm so glad!!! How wonderful. The second tier does take some patience but usually I try and match up the two side seams with the two side seams & that helps!

Hey! This is an awesome tutorial ♡ One quick question/request. How did you draft the bodice and facing pattern pieces? I could just kind of eyeball the shape.... but if there is a method you used that would be easier that would be lovely!
@fromcarlyb
@fromcarlyb Год назад
Eyeballing the shape is great! You can also start from a rectangle bodice shape that is slightly bigger then your bust & then add a little curve from the top to 1/3 way down the side seam to accomodate your arm. Hope that helps!
@Jenc1396
@Jenc1396 Год назад
Any tips on how to best create the bodice and facing pattern from scratch? Or is there a pattern you would recommend purchasing to help guide the way?
@fromcarlyb
@fromcarlyb Год назад
You can start with a rectangle that is slightly bigger then your bust size & then add a little curve where the arm goes! If you can kind of replicate the shape that I show in the video then that’s great! It should sit above the bust & end slightly below the bust. Hope that helps a little!

for anyone wondering how to do the bodice part, Jess Dang made a similar dresss ("DIY Tiered maxi dress") and explained wonderfully how to make a bodice with your own measurements: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N5-WD9k-CKQ.html The bodice is a bit different but you can adjust the pattern!

THE MILKMAID DRESS! Absolutely obsessed with this design. What measurements should we take to make the bodice pattern?
@fromcarlyb
@fromcarlyb Год назад
If you can take your bust measurement and then add 5-7cm to that that will give you a rectangle bodice & then you can just add a little curve under the arm & a little bit of a diagonal line on the side seam! I hope that helps. 💖

Hi! This may be a silly question but as a novice sewer who hasn’t ventured into pattern drafting at all: would the measurements for the tiers need to change at all for a plus sized individual? It may just be that I need to do some mock-ups and adjust as needed that way! Thanks so much for sharing this tutorial-I’ve been dying to make a dress just like this since I stumbled across your Instagram!!!
@fromcarlyb
@fromcarlyb Год назад
The measurements should be totally fine for any body as the skirts are super gathered! But if you want to add more length to each skirt tier to maintain the fullness - that's awesome too! Just up to your personal taste.

Carly, maybe I’m being a bit silly but I don’t understand how I can cut out the bodice and facing pieces without having a pattern to follow? The pieces are not geometrical shapes so how do I know how to cut them? Thank you. Ps: thank you for making this video !! As a beginner it makes sewing seem so much more accessible.
@fromcarlyb
@fromcarlyb Год назад
It is a little weird to start with! If you make the bodice a rectangle that is about 5 -10cm bigger then your bust then that will achieve a similar look! You can add a little dip/curve under the arm and slightly angle the side seam to be diagonal as additional steps. Hope that helps!

I really hate gathering. Don’t get me wrong I love the way it looks, but my thread always seems to snap while I’m sewing or when I pull it I’m always worried about snapping it. One thing I found worked well for me is zig zagging over yarn. I used a thin crocheting yarn and changed my zig zag width a little until it didn’t catch and that worked really well for me. It didn’t matter if my thread broke while I was sewing and because the yarn is stronger than thread? I wasn’t worried while I was gathering either!
@fromcarlyb

This is so clever ?! I’ve never tried but will have to give it a go. The thread snapping is definitely the worst feeling!

Could you explain how to get the size right for the bodice? Bad at math and tried your equation of my bust (all around 37 inches) plus 10 cm divided by 4 and I got 8.5 cm which is way to small for a bodice 🥲
@fromcarlyb
@fromcarlyb Год назад
I'm sorry it's been a little difficult! If it's your first time trying a bodice shape like this & it's causing you grief, you can certainly have a look around on Etsy for patterns similar. Maybe type in 'summer dress sewing pattern pdf' and I think there will be a few bodices that will help!!
@fromcarlyb

But also if your bust is 37 inches (97cm) and you plus 10cm that will equal 107cm. Divided by four that is 26.75cm ! Hopefully that helps!
