The best fabrics for your hair are smooth ones, silk is best, but for cheaper multiple pillows buy a high thread count cotton sheet. Flannel will leave your hair in knots.
My nickname is Janni also (my full name is Janelle)! I’ve never seen anybody else with that nickname. 😊 Your tutorial was very thorough and clear to understand. My son is doing a project using pillowcases with a stuffed animal and a blanket in them for police officers to give to children in bad situations. I learned some new tricks for the serger from you, also. I really appreciate that.
I wasn't particularly looking for a pillowcase video. I set RU-vid on sew and was scrolling and found your video, decided to watch, then I watched another of your videos and another and yet another and almost 3 hours later decided it was time to go to bed, at 1:00 a.m. LOL I went to your channel and was watching literally all of your videos and lost track of time. I learned something from each video. one thing I have to say though, on one of your videos you said that people will make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, but what I like to say is, it's not a mistake it's a learning experience. I absolutely love your tutorials and I will probably spend another 3 hours tonight watching
My computer has ESP. I am just returning to sewing and attempting to make a couple cross stitch bags as Christmas gifts and thought a pillow case would be wonderful for my Grands. I went to RU-vid and this video pops up even before I added pillowcases in the search bar. Wonderful video! I want to make these for everyone! Thank you!!
I'm so glad I came across your channel. I love these pillowcases and the roll up method. I never thought about making such cute pillowcases and now I think everyone will get one! Your teaching is very thoroughly explained, and you have great ideas.
Wish I'd seen your video a cpl years ago. New sewist. Had zero ideas how to make a pillow case. After seeing a video with burrito style. I gave it a shot. However, there isn't one that I could find and believe me I searched for days. In fact until I wasin a panic for time. The prob was how to create a pillowcase that had ( like cats) fabric facing right way not long way. When you put a pillow on the bed you want to see those critters looking at you. Lol> on both sides! Well, I quickly realized there was no idea anywhere how to do that either. So 6 hours later I did it! Added an extra seam on folded side. Flipped fabric upside-down added a new French seam on that side as well.. then went about putting it together ❤ WOWZERS I was so proud of myself. As I sit here writing this I have to admit if you flip pillowcase opening the opposite way eternal the pillow is on bed the critters were face up as well. I think it's probably still do it with the extra seam. After all it doesn't take but a few min extra and then they are always right side up. Lol yes a lil ocd. The best part, I was just beginning to relearn nearly everything after a B.I. lent why it took hours to digit it how to get those darn mermaids actually. Lol upside right ! So if I didn't say it, THANK YOU! I hadn't done another one since. Surg this lil refresh my brain was able to o kick into i know how to do that mode. Giving me confidence it would not takes hours and it will certainly be easy more fun the next time. And thank you for putting this out there..I'll admit for anyone struggling after a B.I. or with a mental health ability. There are a few things that can help. But I think that's where there is a a need for a specific type of channel. Thank you again. Many blessings! Ps I look forward to seeing what else you have shared!!
Jan, I have a question PLEASE. I made 3 of these using the "French Seam" method. I lined up the cuff perfectly when I sewed it down the edge- everything matched, it was great I was very happy with it.!!, BUT, however, when I turned the fabric inside out to sew the finally edge of the French seams, the cuff edges did not line up??? I was so careful! Can you please tell me what I did wrong? Thank you...
Sometimes the further you go in on the fabric, it shifts a little. When sewing the second pass, stop before the cuff part and just check to see if you need to adjust a bit. I know that is frustrating.
Thank you for this tutorial! I've been through countless pilllowcase-making tutorials and you're the only one I've found who gives both length and width measurements. I have some fabric right off the bolt that's 40", some that's 42" and some 44". I wasn't sure if a few inches would change it much but now that I know what it's supposed to be, I know which fabric to use. So, thanks!
Love the tips for the serger tails and also the tips about the hump for thick seams. Also the tip on how to keep thread from bunching up at the start of the seam. I'm a beginner, so these are awesome!!!
Your videos are so instructive for a beginner. Thanks to your clear instructions, I've just made my first pillowcase. My husband set up the needle and bobbin for me as I don't sew. I accidentally found your channel and began to watch you out of curiosity. You clearly direct the process in a step-by-step, precise, and concise manner. I went out and bought fabric so I could finally use a sewing machine I was given that had been sitting unused in my office. I'm a beginner and your video is my first class. You're a great teacher so please, please make more videos. Thank you so very much.
I had fabric leftover from making a skirt. (I overestimated yardage when purchasing.) I just finished sewing a pillow case by hand, using the back stitch technique. I embroidered what I consider the front cuff area. Hand sewing may be an option, too.
I just completed an open-ended pillowcase for covering the combined egg crateI just completed an open-ended pillowcase for covering the combined egg crateI just completed an open-ended pillowcase for covering the combined egg crate
As always, just the best video describing exactly what to do. I've made a few, but I think for Christmas, a few more! Do you have good measurements a child's smaller one (more for toddlers)?
Although I've sewn more complicated garments, I've never sewn pillowcases. This video and your instructions were fantastic. Thank you for taking the time to teach us your techniques!
I loved this video.. it's been a long time since I was actively sewing but this encourages me so much.. you do beautiful and professional work.. thank you
Excellent explanations, thank you so much for sharing 🙏 I love your choice of fabrics, so beautiful, and the end results are really lovely ☺💖 I think I will be digging out my stash of fabrics. Have some nice ones but none as pretty as yours. I really like how you have coordinated them too 🥰
Jan, great demo. I'm making a quilts for two twin boys. I have some fabric leftover, and this will be a great guide for making pillowcases. A hot hemmer ruler is also a godsend for making even hems. I cut anti fatigue waffle mats to put under my machines to control vibration. They have the added benefit of serving as great pin cushions!
@@JanHowell I also use this tool to get really crisp corners on my binding (I glue mine down prior to sewing)--that 45 degree line allows perfect alignment--puts a crisp edge for the 1/4" needle stop and a crisp edge on the foldback. Also, it works fantastic on FPP...it is thin and strong so paper folds easily and it works great with Add a Quarter Ruler. Love your channel.
Happy to find your channel! Loved the roll up method. I have to look for better “feel” material in the fabric shop. Thank you and please do some more things for beginners!
I've been making pillowcases for the grands for years. I love that you showed different ways to make these! I noticed that you don't prewash the fabric. Any suggestions on prewashing?
The larger piece of fabric can distort in the washing machine and it is fiddly to get it back squared up (rectangle) whereas a made up pillow case is easier to pull back into shape if needed.
Love your video and methods. I’ve used the burrito method before, and I like to stitch the little contrast piece down so that it doesn’t get all wonky when washed. Thanks again for your video and I am going to subscribe!
I wondered about that. I watched and researched to see if anything was mentioned about top stitching the accent piece. I made 9 sets...I decided to do it on some and leaving some without.
Thank you so much for this video. I was trying to come up with ideas for Xmas gifts. You just knocked off a few of them in my list. BTW, I just love your fabric selection and matching. Soooo cute. My 🐕 thanks you in advance for her upcoming xmas 🛷 gifts. 😉 New sub.
This is a wonderful video in so many ways. Love the burrito method for enclosing the seams. Also the serger technique for making the threads neat at each end. I especially appreciate your concise instructions and your gentle presentation of the material without a lot of superfluous chat. The HSP in me is happy. I am making pillow cases for some loved ones for Christmas and will be using these techniques. Thank you
This is great!! I have leftover flannel... I'll make pillowcases for my 4 year old granddaughter....thanks for sharing. Love the tip too about the selvage edge with a safety pin. I do have those cardboard hem markers too
I'm looking for the video where you said you show how to make your tags, but I don't see it in your description box. Can you add the link here, please?
Thank you for the wonderful step-by-step tutorial. What kind of sewing machine are you using? I am currently using a recently purchased Singer (b/c it's what my G-mother always used) and I am not too happy with it.
I did mention that there is a link in the discription where you can download a FREE printable PDF with a measurement and cutting guide for each size. You can get the information here. youmakeitsimple.com/2022/10/19/how-to-make-a-pillowcase-with-a-cuff-easy-burrito-method/
Making pillowcases for local charities was so much fun for me and my hubby! Your video brings back fond memories. I use the burrito method (my fave method). Thanks for the serger tips that I will try.
Hello - I have little travel pillows I am going to make cases for. - they are. 18x12. Can you recommend the dimensions to cut the body and also I'm going to do a little contrasting cuff. (no trim) on one and no cuff on the other. Your video is very helpful so I'm going to play this tutorial as I am sewing - thank you so much in advance for any assistance.
All you need to do is add seam allowance. That depends on which method you are going to use. I use a 1/2 inch seam allowance. So you'll need to add 1 inch to the side seam. I will give you the link for the blog post which will give more instructions on measurements. Let me know if you still have questions. youmakeitsimple.com/2022/10/19/how-to-make-a-pillowcase-with-a-cuff-easy-burrito-method/
Great video! Thank you for sharing your tips on the different ways to construct a pillow case. I'm in the market for a new iron, can you tell me the name of your cordless iron.🧵🪡
In this post there is a free PDF you can download with all the measurements. youmakeitsimple.com/2022/10/19/how-to-make-a-pillowcase-with-a-cuff-easy-burrito-method/
I never saw the burritos way... Or how to avoid the long tail on the overlock Thanks But what about the closing? You don't show how to do the closing on the pillow case... So, how to put a zip or with ribbons or similar
There isn't a pattern for the pillowcase, but I do have the free pillowcase size cutting guide. The link is in the video description. Here is the link youmakeitsimple.com/2022/10/19/how-to-make-a-pillowcase-with-a-cuff-easy-burrito-method/

They look super cute but don't have the flap inside to cover the pillow 🥲. Is that due to the fabric you are using not being wide enough? Do we need to buy actual sheeting fabric to make them with the inside flap? I'm trying to do the mental gymnastics of trying to work out how to add enough side contrast fabric to incorporate the flap but am not quite getting whether I just add extra for the flap on one side which I assume is correct, but then I'm stuck for how to line it all up to sew so that the flap is inside when the pillowcase is turned out. I think I need to sit down with paper and a pen and plan it out lol.
Hello! I checked the blog and tried to find it in the video. Is it possible to share the dimensions of the pillow case? I only ever heard the 42 inch measurement.
You can find a free downloadable printable that has all the pillowcase sizes and the measuremenst to cut the fabric to. youmakeitsimple.com/2022/10/19/how-to-make-a-pillowcase-with-a-cuff-easy-burrito-method/
Just don’t get your fabrics at Joann! They are so bad and stingy at cutting the fabrics! Your better off going to Hobby Lobby, they are more generous with their one yard
Terrific information.....I made my own pillow set of pillow cases twice now, but to make em' look spiffy, professional and using a "fancier fabric" I will try your teachings. I've always searched for "designer" type cases (to dress up my bed) but ...out of my reach dollar $$$ wise. Now I can have them !!!!! Thanks for sharing.....God bless
Wow, how impressive your sewing is" such presion " 🏆👍at times having the best of sewing machines helps one project, but those of you who are beginners or just don't have a machine, (hand sewing is always appreciated )😇👩🐕🛡️thank you for sharing.
Caution on making these out of quality flannel (which tends to be thicker than cheap flannel) - If you add flannel cuff AND trim piece, the seam ends up being an enormous lump. You also have to sew more than a 3/8" French seam in order to cover such thick seam allowances properly. Ask me how I know...
I just want to say I have watched a couple of your tutorials on how to make things and you explain it so well. I am in the beginning stages of teaching my self how to sew. Hand sewing right now, because I don't have a machine yet ( hopefully for Christmas). Mostly teaching myself through RU-vid from people like, so I appreciate you taking the time and having the patience to teach. Thank you!! I think I want to take my journey to making mostly quilts and other stuff (maybe with a few pj's) and such. Any tips or tricks for new beginners?
Thanks for the great video. I had made pillowcases using all the methods in the past, however I have a date with my granddaughter to make some pillowcases, with and without contrasting cuffs. I thought if she watched YOUR video, she might be more prepared to sew the RIGHT way and not try shortcuts!! Thanks so much!
What's the thread count of quilting cotton? Of cheap cotton? No-one wants to sleep with rough fabric against their face. That's why pillow cases are available. Sheesh. Ephemera, BS, clothes design and textile science
Your tutorial is excellent 🎉 Thank for for this video. I bought 2 yards of St.Patrick’s themed fabric last week to make 2 pillowcases. One for my great grandson and one for my daughter. I’ve made them in the past but this helps me not to think too much. 💜
Jain just love your contrasting pillowcases. You have load me into making many as I have a lot of fabric stashed in my sewing room. Thank you so much for sharing. Wishing you all the best in health wealth and happiness and creativity always. Thank you very much from India, Delhi
Very impressed. I like how you making people to understand what you do. And it's cool. Every thing you said we can understand. So you will learn faster. That's good. Keep up ur work good educated videos.
