I recently picked up hand building pottery again with the hopes of eventually entering markets and starting an online shop. Social media can be so discouraging when you start to compare your work to others. I’ve followed a lot of ceramicist who use wheels and I used to tell myself “my work will never look as good as that.” Coming across your videos has been so inspiring and I’m so thankful for how easy, free and fun you make ceramics feel. Art should always be this freeing. Thank you thank you! Hand building is my favorite way of making ceramics and I’m so happy I came across your channel!!💛

Thank you! In this video I'm using LB6 from Laguna, but I use lots of different clay bodies. I like handbuilding with clays that have some sand in them.

@Gina Z hi, Gina, thanks for your video, I've noticed your clay is pretty stif not soft at the beginning, does that mean you started to work on a little bit dried slab? Like leather hard? Mine after rolling a slab becomes really soft and when I form a cylinder it becomes very wobbly. Wondering what did I miss here? Thanks!

Hi there! I was wondering if you use a certain amount of clay to make sure that cups hold a certain amount of liquid? ie: 12 oz of clay = 8oz cup ect. Thank u! Love your videos (:
@ginazycher
@ginazycher 3 года назад
Thank you, Christina! That's a great question, but it's really hard to say. It depends on the shape of your mug and how thick or thin you make it. Best to take a mug you love, measure it, and try to make something that matches those dimensions (but just a tiny bit bigger, because clay shrinks). But for reference, I'd estimate the mugs I make are usually made with between 1-1.5 lbs of clay.

I'm using LB6 from Laguna in the video, but I use several different types in my practice. I like clays that have some sand in them - those are great for handbuilding.

I am new also. Looking for the right kind of canvas. What do you use?
@ginazycher
@ginazycher 3 года назад
My table cover is a product called a Slab Mat, which is a canvas-like material with a rubber backing, so it's more rigid than plain fabric. You can also work on something like a piece of plywood or drywall board.

What do you glaze with to make it food safe?
@terrysommers7239
@terrysommers7239 3 года назад
I'm no Gina, but a really cheap and easy and food safe glaze is to use wood ash (or leaf ash, bramble ash, pine needle ash, etc) and clay and water. You can mix dry in 50:50 ratio, 25:75, or 75:25 ratio dry weight (add water after mixed) and play with the ratios. It's basically free, and you can play with different burned materials for different effects. Google 'wood ash glaze'.

why do you pinch an already slabbed cylinder?
@ginazycher
@ginazycher 3 года назад
Good question! I like the texture and slight asymmetry you get from pinching (and also I just think it's fun), but you could definitely make this out of a thinner slab and skip the pinching part to save time and get something that has that smooth slab-built look.
@micheledickey4066
@micheledickey4066 3 года назад
I was going to ask the same thing. But I see how organic it looks when it’s pinched.

The volume is soooo low. Can you speak louder or use a headset with microphones? Thanks!! And how did you make the slab?
@ginazycher
@ginazycher 3 года назад
I don't know what happened with the audio - I'm sorry! I rolled out the slab with a rolling pin, but you can use a wine bottle or something similar. And for this project, since the slab doesn't need to be perfect, you can just pound one out with the heel of your hand.
