How to Make a Rain Barrel that Looks Natural in your Yard

I started collecting rain water from my deck roof for a backyard irrigation system with this rain barrel I made from a 50 gallon drum and pressure treated lumber. I'm using a transfer pump to power a sprinkler. The inspiration was to make a homemade whiskey barrel that won't rust. The rain barrel sits in a highly visible part of my yard so I wanted to give it an upgrade over a typical rainwater collection system.

Great vid man. Getting your wife's reaction was a great idea. Seeing a wife support her husband's cool idea is very wholesome. Hope you are doing well.

Awesome!! I was looking for a gutter solution and came across your videos. I went down the rabbit hole and am having sooooo much fun watching the rest of your productions! I LOVE your editing and voice overs. You and your wife's laughter is so great to hear. AND you gave me a great solution for my shed/potters studio rain issue. It just so happens I have the aluminum flashing on hand from another project so I think the only thing I need to buy is the rods. Thanks so much for the cheap and easy solution!! Looking forward to many more of your videos!!!

I did it myself with the Woodglut plans. I think this is the best way to find out how to build it.

10:10 I know it's not as "low profile" but using something rigid, like a length of PVC pipe, might give you the confidence in reaching the bottom that you need. Just make sure to cut the bottom at a 45° angle so it doesn't suction flat to the bottom of the barrel!

Very interested in the patio cover, gutter and rain barrel projects. I have drainage problems and need to learn more about using rain barrels (which I have one and need another one), but need someone to help me hook them up. Great DIY videos. Great ideas. Keep up with the great ideas. Thank you.

Nicely done! I love your ideas and how you figure it all out! The look of the barrel is great. Keep going, can't wait to see more! I love your patio roof, I'll be looking for that video, too.

I think this is a very creative way to make those plastic barrels look good. I really like this idea, and might "borrow" it, haha. I don't have a table saw, though... only a circular saw... that's the only snag, so I'll have to be more careful with my cuts.
@BuildingWithBlake
@BuildingWithBlake 2 года назад
Go for it. Using a circular saw will be tough cause it’s a lot of cutting but you could probably rig up a fence with some 2x4s. Let me know how it turns out.

Use a fishing bobber with a string to measure the water depth. We made a mark at empty, half way and full. :)

Clever! Love the garden hose, much less intrusive than a downspout. To check the water level in the drum, would using a simple wooden dowel as a dipstick work? Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing!

Well Blake, as others have said. I came across your content from searching for a clear roof alternative to building my own screened in porch. We got a quote of $50K, and there is NO way it is going to add that much to our home. With lumbar prices where they are, I am going to mainly use metal studs and panel frames. Thinking of aircrete in the panels, not positive yet. But as I stated in your gutter video. To help with that buildup of ice/snow and such. I recommend looking at Costco or Sam's Club for a mesh gutter cover. I used my Dremel to cut the metal supports because the snips I had weren't really working for me. I did my whole house for $150ish. And I think it would help in your situation. (Just my thoughts anyway.) I really am glad I subscribed!!

Nice job! I am leaning towards something to pretty up my white linked rain barrels. Was thinking of wrapping in snow fence slats. It's all about the $$$. Oh, and I sub'd too 👊

Hi new subscriber here … love your channel! Wondering whether you found (as I did) that I really should have installed more rain barrels because the darn things fill up so quickly after even a small rain. Love the way you do this one - very nice!
@BuildingWithBlake
@BuildingWithBlake 2 года назад
Yes. I have three total but they all capture water from separate roofs and they could all use a backup. It’s not too difficult to link them together so I may add more. Thanks for subscribing!

I had planned a follow up on this but ran into some health issues. I’m doing better but it looks like I might have to wait till next year now that winter is closing in.

I wondered about the transfer pump as well. I have a "rain" barrel (it's actually from the AC), but if I go uphill then I just fill a watering can and lug that thing around. I do have a drain toward the bottom of mine though.

Secure a glow stick to the end of the pump hose when you drop it in.

Tape your hose to a stick you can stick into the barrel. No ruler required.

Very beautiful project! I got to wonder though how much all that wood cost... I am wondering if I could do the same but with pallet wood.
@BuildingWithBlake
@BuildingWithBlake Год назад
I'd guess it was roughly $120 in lumber costs. Pallet wood could work if it's treated for weather. Just have to true up your edges.

Why does everyone who makes utube videos on collecting rain water loose 5 gallons or more of the barrel capacity I can see an inch to keep settlement out of the valve but losing capacity at the top has no purpose one of the bungs is 2 inch fip use a pvc adapter to threaded fip then use a T run your water into the top plumb the side inlet of the T as an overflow water fills totop of the barrel
