I notice metal cans have ridged areas like the actual Vader saber in the bottom i wonder if they could work as long as you find one.
@MakeItorBreakItNow
@MakeItorBreakItNow 3 года назад
Vahid, very observant of you! I looked into doing what you are talking about, couple things to consider, you have to find the right can with ridges, I think mine was an older can. Once I cut out the pieces then you need to figure out how to "glue them to the pipe, jell super glue worked for me but in the end I decided it wasn't worth it, all designs have tradeoffs. good luck though, let me know how yours turns out.

Sorry to correct and I may be wrong, but I think they used windshield wiper rubber T section for the grips on the ANH sabers.

Thanks for your thoughts and collaboration on this project. I also heard about the windshield wipers and tried to use them but they seem to have been redesigned since the 70's and don't really look the same. Ironically the rubber pads have the identical length and can be cut to width and are available everywhere, so favor this approach. Please keep the comments flowing, much appreciated!

@@MakeItorBreakItNow Truth is, even the most ardent prop folks do not know for sure what was used for the grips. Some say, wrongly, that they were 70's Mini Cooper windshield wiper blades. Most agree that it's the slide tracks (T-tracks) of desk drawers but cannot identify the brand, etc. In either case, there is no definitive answer. Yet. (Never say never, right?) I think your solution is both ingenious and effective!

@@geoffallen2047 thanks again. Yeah, when I can find something I make the next best thing. Heck the "same" lightsabers were changed between movies. Also thinking about how to create Mace Windu's because I think we'll see him again soon...

I suspect the same. That would be Mandaloriffic! Good point about multiple versions in the same movie. It can get confusing. When I build a prop, I research it like it's my dang job! Lol. Example: a lot of Vader's Empire Strikes Back saber builders swear the little piece of motherboard under the bubble strip is blue. It was green. Blue is what happens during the corrosion process over time. Same with the small screws near the base of the grips. Not there in the films. Both things are a result of post-production decay and repair. My goal is to build/make props the way they'd have looked if we were on the set and not what they look like after 40 years in a storage shed.

Hey! Thank you for this video! I realize i'm commenting on a video from a long time ago, but would you by any chance have those templates? Or did you custom make those templates? If you downloaded them, i would LOVE to get a link or some direction on where to grab them!

Great work, sir! I'm in the process of making a static Vader ESB saber hilt. Your two videos are what inspired me the most. I've found that drilling the wire-holes in the tube is absolutely THE make-or-break point for the success of the build. I've practiced and the holes get better every time. My question for you, if I may, is this: Did you have anything inside the tube while you were drilling or only during center-punching? My concern is that drilling an empty tube will compromise its shape; flatten it in areas and lose its "roundness." (My first attempt at drilling, I put a 1-3/8" wooden dowel wrapped in blue tape that ran the length of the tube. Yeah, don't do that! Lol. I spent two days trying to get mangled wood and tape out of that now unusable tube. Hope you had a great Holiday and Happy New Year! If you'd like me to share a few of the cool tricks and found-items I used, I'm more than happy to share.)
@MakeItorBreakItNow
@MakeItorBreakItNow 3 года назад
Geoff Allen, Thanks for the extensive comment. I don't think I had anything in the tube when I drilled the holes. If did it would have been a 1 inch PVC pipe. Something lose fitting to avoid what happened to you, I've made a similar mistake BTW so you are in good company.

Stay tuned. I'm working out ways to build Ahsoka's two light sabers, the ones she used in Mandalorian. The curves make it a bit more challenging, but I'm getting close. Stay tuned.

My first prop build was an E-11 blaster 18 years ago. I shared my templates everywhere under my handle Iambubby. I love sharing info with other prop peeps. In regard to lightsabers, I found a very easy way to make a Vader saber end cap that literally costs less than a buck. I will write it up nice, clean, and lean and post it here if that's cool. All one needs is a lid from a bottle of Equate (Walmart) brand nutrition drink (their version of Ensure), a 3/4" rubber grommet, and a drill.

Good company, indeed! I could write a book on "The Horrors of Prop Building." Lol. Waaaay more goofs and busts than successes. But, it's all those goofs and busts that lead to better work.
